Introduction

RHEOLATE®

HX 6008 is a novel nonionic synthetic associative thickener (NiSAT) which has outstanding rheological properties for aqueous applications. It develops high shear viscosity (ICI) very efficiently, and additionally displays some mid-shear viscosity contribution. RHEOLATE

® HX

6008 is effective in a broad range of latex chemistries.

Incorporation and Levels of use

RHEOLATE® HX 6008 can be used as supplied or, if necessary, further diluted with water. Addition can take place at any time during the manufacturing process, but incorporation into the mill base before the letdown is recommended. RHEOLATE® HX 6008 can be combined with other associative rheological additives, clay based thickeners or cellulosic thickeners for higher packaged viscosity. It is important to assess the effectiveness of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 in the entire system, as performance can be affected by other raw material ingredients. Further detailed background information on the technology of nonionic synthetic associative thickeners can be found in the Elementis Specialties RHEOLOGY HANDBOOK.

Typical use levels of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 are in a range 0.1% to 1.5% (product weight) related to the total system weight.

Key Benefits

Extremely high efficient thickener with both ICI and KU properties.

Compatible in various resin systems and especially efficient with acrylic and sty-rene acrylic resins.

Excellent balance of sag, flow, and lev-elling.

Loading level comparison at equal ICI viscosity of 2.2P

1% of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 was sufficient

to obtain the required ICI viscosity of 2.2P

measured with an ICI-rheometer.

The high efficiency of RHEOLATE® HX 6008

required the lowest amount of thickener to

obtain the same ICI viscosity of 2.2P.

Efficiency Evaluation in a Pure Acrylic based Paint

Pure Acrylic based Paint (PVC 30%) Formulation

The test formulation was based on

an aqueous copolymer emulsion

of acrylic/methacrylic acid esters.

The APEO-free binder has a solid

content of 46%, Tg of 23°C and a

particle size of 120 µm. It is

commonly used in exterior

coatings e.g. for masonry paints

containing coalescing agents,

deep shade paints, plasters and

textured coatings, external wall

insulation systems and primers.

The flow curve of the paint based on RHEOLATE® HX 6008 confirmed the additional contribution to the

low-mid shear viscosity in comparison to the paints with reference thickeners.

Rheogram

By adjusting the formulations to an equal ICI-viscosity value the resulting Krebs-Stormer viscosity will

vary. 1% of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 yielded the largest KU contribution and resulted in a ready to apply

paint. The Krebs-Stormer viscosities of the paints with reference thickeners were too low for practical use

and required additional adjustments with a KU-thickener to increase mid shear viscosity.

Efficiency Evaluation in a Styrene Acrylic based Paint

This evaluation was made

with Acronal S790. Market

feedback confirmed the

functionality in this latex

technology. The binder is

APEO-free, has a solid

content of 50%, a MFT of

20°C and a particle size of

100 µm. The binder is

generally used for interior

paints, textured finishes,

gloss/satin latex paints,

primers and silicate emulsion

paints. It can be suitable for

exterior paints, concrete

protection coatings and

exterior insulation systems.

Only 1.8 % of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 was needed to achieve an ICI-viscosity of 2.2P, which is in this test

the lowest required loading level. The reference formulations needed at least 3.2% of thickener in order to

achieve the target viscosity.

Efficiency Evaluation in a Styrene Acrylic based Paint

Mid shear viscosity build

A Krebs-Stormer viscosity of 90 was obtained with 1.8% of RHEOLATE® HX 6008, which represents an

acceptable level for application.

Rheogram

The rheogram shows that RHEOLATE® HX 6008 increased the viscosity over the full shear rate range

up to 1000 s-1. The reference thickeners in this latex technology yielded lower KU-viscosity values com-

pared to RHEOLATE® HX 6008. They needed a small adjustment with a second KU-builder to reach

workable viscosities.

8

Complexitiy Reduction Evaluation

Pure Acrylic based Paint (PVC 30%) Formulation

The reference formulations did not achieve both ICI-

and KU-viscosity targets with only one thickener.

They required a larger quantity of an ICI-thickener

and a small additional amount of KU-builder.

With RHEOLATE® HX 6008 however, only one

thickener was needed to reach both mid and high

shear viscosity targets. Moreover, with RHEOLATE®

HX 6008 the rheological profile was obtained with the

highest efficiency, i.e. the lowest total amount of

thickener was required.

One way to control costs in paint production is by reducing the complexity. This can, amongst others, be

achieved by the reduction of the number of raw materials that simplifies the formulation.

Many formulating practices require a combination of a high shear and a low shear thickener in order to

meet a targeted rheological profile. RHEOLATE® HX 6008 has the ability to take over the functions of both

high shear and a low shear thickener and aids to simplify the paint formulation.

To illustrate this property of RHEOLATE® HX 6008 we evaluated the replacement of a combination of two

thickeners by just RHEOLATE® HX 6008 in a PVC 30% acrylic paint.

The paints were formulated at equal ICI viscosities of 3 ± 0.2P and equal KU-viscosities of 118 ± 1P.

The rheogram shows that RHEOLATE® HX 6008 provided less shear thinning flow characteristics than

both formulations with thickener combinations, nevertheless RHEOLATE® HX 6008 yielded the same ap-

plication properties (see table below).

Despite the lower viscosity at lower shear rates, the sagging performance of the RHEOLATE® HX 6008

based paint is similar to the paints with the thickener combination. Also properties such as levelling, brush

-out and roller spattering behaviour were very similar. Differences can be qualified as non significant.

To achieve a stable DIN 4 cup viscosity of 100 seconds, the formulation with RHEOLATE® HX 6008

required a significantly lower loading level than the formulation with the reference thickener system. The

blank formulation without thickeners had a DIN 4 mm cup viscosity of 14 seconds. At equal DIN 4 cup

viscosity, the formulation with RHEOLATE® HX 6008 showed higher Brookfield viscosity over the full

shear rate range.

The acrylic binder emulsion is a universal self-crosslinking multiphase acrylic dispersion. The binder has

a solid content of 44%, MFT of 50°C and Koenig pendulum hardness of 105.

It is commonly used for parquet varnishes, wood stain sealers, concrete floorings, MDF, furniture and

general plastics like ABS, PC, etc.

Evaluation of the Influence on Final Coating Properties

Influence on film properties

The initial hardness of the clear coat containing RHEOLATE® HX 6008 was already on a higher level

than the reference clear coat and over time the hardness continued to develop much faster. This illus-

trates that RHEOLATE® HX 6008 has limited influence on the primary coating properties.

The same trend was found for the obtained gloss. The gloss of the clear coat based on RHEOLATE® HX

6008 was much higher.

The main binder, WorleeSol E 150 W, is a waterthinnable polyurethane modified alkydemulsion with a

solid content of 40% in water. The alkydresin has an oil content of 40% and an acid number of max. 30.

The emulsion is multifunctional applicable. It is especially recommended for high gloss systems in the

decorative segment and also for industrial paints.

Rheogram and Storage stability

The initial rheograms of the alkyd paints based on RHEOLATE® HX 6008 and the reference formulation

based on two thickeners were almost identical (bold lines).

After storage of the paints for four weeks at 40°C, both paints showed a decrease in viscosity, but the

paint based on RHEOLATE® HX 6008 showed a smaller viscosity decrease and thus was more stable.
