Rhodes greatly appreciates support of our library collections. Below we recognize the many supporters who have contributed to the Burrow Library, the Paul Barret, Jr. Library, and the music and art collections now housed in the Paul Barret Jr., Library. The $35 million gift from the Paul W. Barret, Jr. Charitable Trust in April 2001, the largest single gift in the college’s history, is believed to be the largest gift for a capital project ever made to a liberal arts college. The trust was established after the 1999 death of Paul W. Barret, Jr. ’46, a lifelong supporter of the college and chairman of Barretville Bank and Trust Co. north of Memphis, an enterprise established by Barret’s father in 1920. Barret graduated from Rhodes in 1946 with a B.A. in history. He was treasurer of his junior class and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity. Through the years Barret served as a member of the President’s Council and in 1980-81, as president of The Red & Black Society. Paul Barret, Jr. was the great-nephew of A.K. Burrow who, with his wife Catherine, in 1953 funded Rhodes’ Burrow Library and the Catherine Burrow Refectory. At the time it was the largest gift ever made to a Presbyterian college. The Paul W. Barret, Jr. Library replaces Burrow Library, which is being adapted to function as a center to provide student services and opportunities. With the creation of the Paul W. Barret, Jr. Library, collections from the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics Departments, which were once held in the corresponding departments, are now housed in the Paul W. Barret, Jr. Library.
