Last Sunday, Alameda’s Rhythmix Cultural Works (RCW) played
host to a colorful show-case of Jyoti Kala Mandir (JKM), College of Indian Classical Arts’ Junior Dancers. Established in 1993, JKM was founded by Guru Jyoti Rout and is a non-profit that serves the international commu-nity. JKM represents the future for Indian music, dance and Mardala in the U.S. and India. The organization is dedicated to preserving and pro-moting India’s vibrant classical music and dance. The institution not only trains students in music and dance, it also conducts events like the dance and music festival, held at RCW, as well as workshops, seminars and dance recitals.

Rhythmix Showcases Indian Dancers Pasta Pelican Offers Only the Best View, Food and AmbienceMichel Michel
An Italian restaurant lies hidden away on the Alameda side of the
Oakland Estuary. The views of the pink and red sunsets romanticize everything close to the bay. The views of sunsets and city lights, the roaring fireplace, a glass of wine and the exquisite Italian food makes for a priceless evening’s memory.
This description could only refer to the Pasta Pelican at 2455 Mariner Square Drive, which Hadi Natouf has owned for 13 years.
Even though Natouf’s genius makes the vision of the restaurant sell itself, Hadi will tell you that the genius belongs to his staff. “I can’t do it all alone. It is my staff who carries out the vision that I have for my restaurant. Without them, it just doesn’t work.
“But it is not just about my restaurant, it is also about building a relationship with my customers and being a part of the community. Yes, it is also about cleanliness, receiving people, giving stel-lar service, great food and
wine, but it is really about interacting with the Alameda community in general. It is the entire experience.”
When I asked about his secret ingredient, Hadi pointed to the olive oil and balsamic vinegar imported from Tunisia. He picked this line personally while sampling products in the Mediterranean. “Olive oil is the opposite of wine — the newer, the fresher!” he said.
Hadi is from Syria. “The food is almost the same throughout the Mediterranean. Much of what we call Italian food is not just from Italy; it is from all over the Mediterranean. We all enjoy it.
“Our sauces and dressings are all homemade, and our meat is certified Angus beef.” said Hadi. “I have it delivered several times a week. Our fresh chickens are free range. We also do not allow chicken raised with hormones in our restaurant. Our seafood is brought in daily; this is the kind of food I feed my fam-ily.”
The Pasta Pelican has two levels to accomodate all sorts of events. “We see
a lot of families and private parties. We give them value, good food for a good price. You can depend on our con-sistency. If it tastes great this time, it will taste great next time.”
On Wednesday and Friday nights around 5 p.m., the Alameda and Oakland yacht clubs race on the Estuary. “It’s really something to see.”
Come in for Happy Hour 4 to 6 p.m. everyday of the week and enjoy the races and $5 pizza plates along with other appetizers.
“We carry many good wines and carry some local wine also. On the cold rainy days, come sit by the fire-place with a nice hot bowl of soup. You will enjoy your experience at the Pasta Pelican.”
Have a peek at the menu at www.pastapelican.com/Menu.aspx. To learn more call 864-7427.

Popular Restaurant Adds Tunes to the MenuSun Staff Reports
Something fun is always happen-ing at the new and improved water-front Dragon Rouge Vietnamese Bistro at 2337 Blanding Ave., next to the Park Street Bridge.
When weather permits, the res-taurant invites parents, kids and even dogs to dance to a live DJ or just listen to the music on its
waterfront patio overlooking the Oakland/Alameda Estuary.
On the Friday of each month following dinner, an ’80s-themed party takes place from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. featuring DJ Dave Stebbins.
On the second Friday of each-month the Rockit City DJs spin.
On third and fourth Fridays and Saturdays the sounds on the patio
include a variety of musical styles like salsa, reggae, R&B, classic rock and roll, ’90s hip hop, and soul-ful house, through special guest performers.
There’s plenty more going on at Dragon Rouge, so check out its weekly calendar at www.dragonrougerestaurant.com or call 521-1800 for more information.
The 28th Annual Park Street Art & Wine Faire once again proved to be
the “Best Event in Alameda” and continues to be a home-town tradition in our island city. With a weekend atten-dance close to 100,000 people, lots of friends and families came out to the Park Street Business District to enjoy the afternoon sun along with a fab-ulous variety of arts and crafts vendors, tasty festival foods, cold beers and lush wines, and two lively children’s areas.
As part of the weekend festivities, there were also two stages with a number of popular Bay Area bands playing classic rock and R&B favorites. Alameda bands Spill the Wine and The Mighty Neptunes also cranked out some great music this year along with the returning favor-ites.
The Park Street Business Association would like to thank all those who participated in this year’s Park Street Art & Wine Faire — the people who
came to enjoy the Faire, the merchants who got into the spirit of the event, and all our terrific volunteers. We would especially like to recognize the organizations that kept the drinks flowing at the beverage booths: Alameda Chamber of Commerce, Alameda Credit Union, Alameda Eagles #1076, Alameda Elks Lodge #1015, Alameda Sun, Bank of Alameda, Cerda-Zein Real Estate, Gallagher & Lindsey Realtors, Jazzercise, Kiwanis Club of Alameda, OMM Inc & Mason
Management, Rotary Club of Alameda, and Wellguard Insurance Solutions.
We’d also like to thank Rock Wall Wine Company for being our wine vendor again this year. If you didn’t get a chance to taste their premium wines at our street fair, you can visit their new tasting room at Alameda Point where they have stunning views of San Francisco.
