This week’s readings: Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary TimeHow many of us seek wisdom as much as we seek money, power, advancement, glory, praise from our fellow workers? The first reading reminds us that the one who see her finds her. How many awake extra early to search for her? Or do we presume we already know all we need to know? We are often wise in how to manipulate the world but not wise in how to apply what we have learned to be in accord with God’s will. Do we ask God’s guidance in all our decisions or figure we can do our best without Him and then expect him to make up at the end whatever we forgot to take into account? As the psalm says, do we thirst for God’s wisdom?

When we hear the story of the ten virgins do we get lost in the details? I remember on person saying that it wasn’t very Christian of the five not to share their oil. Obviously, this person missed the point of the par-able. If we have sought out Wisdom as the first reading mentions we will do our best to always be pre-pared. Here Paul comes with the argument to not be unaware. In our Christian life are we only concerned with the short term? Do we figure our plans are sufficient and we do not need to take into account what God’s plans are? Do we figure we will always have more time to make changes “later”? What happens if we do not have a “later”, after all no one is guaranteed tomorrow. As it says, “you know neither the day nor the hour."

Next week’s readings: Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary TimeWe are coming to the end of the liturgical year and the readings change to remind us of the end of time and the end of our walk on earth. While the first reading speaks of a worthy wife, this proverb can apply to other aspects of life as well. How do employers treat good employees? How do we treat our neigh-bors? Our co-workers? How we treat those around us says a great deal about what and who we consider important. Do we let them know how we appreciate the good things they do? I knew a pastor who never thanked anyone for anything, figuring it was their “duty”. Paul reminds us that we are supposed to be chil-dren of the light. Do we behave accordingly? Often as a priest I have heard people say after a loved one has died that they wish they had been more kind or told them how much the person meant to them.

Do we use our talents for the good of ourselves alone? Do we share our blessings with others? Do we even use our talents? Or use them in the proper way? I have met numerous geniuses behind bars in pris-ons. Talented people who used their gifts improperly or for only themselves. What are we doing with the gifts and blessings God has given us?

TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) Retreats Do you enjoy ministering to young people, or might you want to give it a try? Do you have experience with TEC (Teens

Encounter Christ) retreats, or might you want to learn more about them?

The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston is working to form a group of interested adults as an official, diocesan TEC Leadership Team. Our new co-chairs of the team are Mr. Ralph Modena and Mrs. Gina Boggess, both of Princeton. We’re looking for

adults who will be able to devote some time to developing a robust TEC program throughout the state and building the infrastructure to maintain it. We will need help identifying other adults who might be able to help, reaching teens who

might be interested in attending a retreat, and promoting the retreats to parishes, schools, and ministry centers.

If you might have an interest in joining our efforts, please contact Mrs. Jeanne McKeets, in the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, at 304-233-0880, extension 374. She can also be reached at [email protected].

Technology CornerEvery November, the Church offers the faithful an opportunity to offer a

plenary indulgence for the a soul in purgatory. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Vatican has issued a special decree extending the plenary

indulgence for the souls in purgatory throughout the month of November. The decree asks the faithful to visit a cemetery and pray for the deceased, go to

Confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the Holy Father. Additional information and suggested prayers can be found at

https://www.churchpop.com/2020/10/28/how-to-gain-a-plenary-indulgence-for-souls-in-purgatory-amid-pandemic-according-to-vatican-decree/

A wonderful discussion of Purgatory and the role of indulgences as "salutary remedies for temporal punishment due to sin" can be read at

https://onepeterfive.com/the-modern-scandal-of-indulgences-its-not-what-you-think/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=socialnetwork

You can find the official definition of indulgences in the Catechism of the Catholic Church found here: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_P4G.HTM

Ask the Pastor

Did the Pope okay gay marriages? Answer: No, he did not.

Please see the following site for the clarifications that explain that the pope’s comments do not pertain to Catholic doctrine regarding the nature of marriage as a union between one man

and one woman, but to provisions of civil law.https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/vatican-secretariat-of-state-
