Power supply: a global issue
Our world is facing a global challenge to provide a sufficient and reliable supply of energy to the inhabitants of the Planet.
On one hand the need for energy is increasing, and on the other hand the energy resources should be sustainable and their environmental footprint, essentially the CO2 emissions, should be as low as possible.
Moreover the energy supply should be available for all people at affordable prices.
4
Cigre Chilean NC, Santiago de Chile, Chile, Nov. 23-24, 2015 – Biennial 2015
The challenges
1.- Renewable energy sources using wind and solar energy are intermittent, and they have to be integrated on all the levels of the power systems, low and very high voltages.
2.- Fast economic growth requiring more and more power supply, and growing environmental awareness and requirements. Manage the so called energy transition.
3.- Rights of way to build new transmission infrastructures, the incentives given to renewable energy sources, the power balancing between countries and the need for energy storage.
5
Cigre Chilean NC, Santiago de Chile, Chile, Nov. 23-24, 2015 – Biennial 2015
The challenges
4.- The distribution of electricity has to consider the connection of dispersed intermittent generation and the distribution network operators have to reconsider the architecture of their networks.
5.- The first challenge for operators is to keep the existing power systems with old infrastructures operating properly even if they have to face new problems due to the fast development of intermittent power sources.
6
Cigre Chilean NC, Santiago de Chile, Chile, Nov. 23-24, 2015 – Biennial 2015
The challenges
6.- The second challenge is to transmit high amounts of power over longer distances to connect remote areas where the power is generated, towards the consumption areas.
7.- Intermittency of renewable power generation is a third challenge which requires more interconnection between areas or more energy storage.
8.- Finally the fourth challenge is to manage the new behavior of the consumers which can also be small producers.
7
Cigre Chilean NC, Santiago de Chile, Chile, Nov. 23-24, 2015 – Biennial 2015
The future power system
The future of the power system is a challenge for engineers, scientists, economists and politicians equally.
System planners and operators need new analytical tools and methods to model the increasing uncertainties.

CIGRE’s organization of works
16 Study Committees manage 230 Working Groups.
Each Working Group has Terms of Reference which define its scope, deliverables and delivery plan.
About 50 new Working Groups are created every year and 50 Working Groups terminate their tasks and are disbanded.
National Committees are invited to propose members (senior and junior) when a new WG is created.
15
Cigre Chilean NC, Santiago de Chile, Chile, Nov. 23-24, 2015 – Biennial 2015
WORKING GROUPS 16
230 Working Groups produce between 40 and 50 Technical Brochures per year.
CIGRE is well organized to provide a vision and guidance for the future developments, and to disseminate the knowledge necessary to manage the existing and future power systems.

RIAC Goals
The objectives of the RIAC derive directly from the objectives of CIGRE while giving emphasis to lberian-American regional issues.
RIAC is in charge of:Ensure continuity and permanent improvement of the biannual
ERIAC (main technical event of RIAC).Encourage activities of CIGRE SCs on Iberian-American issues.Coordinate with other relevant organizations within the Iberian-
American area.Encourage and nurture new National Committees in the Iberian-
American area.
Those objectives are obtained by means of at least a yearly basis Meeting, during the Paris Session in even years andthe ERIAC in odd years.

ERIAC – The Biennial Event of RIAC
• Main technical event of RIAC held every other odd year a tri-border area (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay)
• The first one was in 1986. Every two years since 1987.

XVI ERIAC – The last ERIAC
In order to improve the quality of technical sessions and to make more attractive the event, for this ERIAC several innovations were carried out by RIAC. Some of them:
Creation of the CARE - Advisory Committee of the RIAC for ERIAC;Constitution of a relevant Technical Committee for the XVI ERIAC,
with SC Members of CIGRE and another very well-known engineers of countries without NC;
Definition of rules and criteria for analysis and approval of abstracts and papers;
Duration of the event shortened in a day (from 4 to 3 session days);Presentation of papers in blocks of 3 or 4 consecutive papers and a
common discussion of them at the end (countermeasure in case of no show of authors);
ISBN for the CD-ROM of ERIAC papers, etc.

Current Activities and Plans of RIAC
Taking advantage of successful innovations tested during the XVI ERIAC, Guidelines of RIAC for the organization of the ERIAC are being updated to be applied during the next ERIAC in Paraguay 2017.
Under supervision of CO, a MOU between RIAC and CIER was signed on November 5th, 2015. CIER is an international, non-profit organization, which brings together companies and organizations in the energy sector in South America, Central America and the Caribbean, whose main purpose is to promote and to facilitate the integration in the area of electrical energy in the region, aiming the supply of it by the lowest possible investment and exploitation conditions.
