FOOTNOTES

1898-1906 According to the Rice Lake Chronotype, in the fall of 1898, a group of RLHS

boys traveled to Barron in rigs and buggys and played what is known as

the first Rice Lake football game. The boys from Barron won with no score given.

Between then and 1906, evidence of football games played exist with more research

needed.

1912-1920

In the fall of 1912, the Rice Lake School Board 'abolished' football and it wasn't

until 1921 that RLHS again fielded a school-sanctioned football team.

Little Known Facts

Rice Lake’s own Francis “Pug” Lud graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1935. In the Fall of 1934, he was named by the Chicago Tribune as College Football’s Best Player. In 1935 the Heisman Trophy was established. Had he been a year younger, Pug Lund would undoubtedly have been the first Heisman Trophy winner, recognized as the best college player in the nation.

The Rice Lake Warrior Football team played two teams in the H o’N Conference as trophy games. With the Cumberland Beavers, they battled for the “Cowbell”, and with the Barron Bears, they each played for the “County Seat” trophy. Since the H o’N Conference was founded in 1929, Rice Lake had a series record of 42 wins, 14 losses and a tie against Cumberland, ending in 1985 when Rice Lake left for the Big Rivers Conference. Against Barron, the Warriors won 47 games, lost 6 and tied 2 in Conference and split 10 non-conference games after 1985 for a record of 52-11-2 all. Both the “Cowbell” and the “County Seat” trophy are in the Rice Lake Warriors trophy case.

A few years ago at a Hall of Fame meeting, Rice Lake’s legendary Warren Leary (Class of 1940) remembered a cheer from his high school days and he pounded out the lyrics that went like this:

Horn and Hoof, Horn and Hoof Save the Floor, but Raise the Roof

Razzle-Dazzle, Zizzle-Zip Rice Lake High School, Let ‘Er Rip!

History

What is now Tate Park was purchased by the city in 1935 from William Stein for an athletic field. The $1900 paid for the 8.5 acres came out of the school budget which the city also had a say in approving. Tate Field, which was part of the former Hines Lumber Company, was served by a walk bridge over the Red Cedar River just south of the Washington High School. (Which is now Century Telephone Co. on Wilson Ave.) The field was ready for football in September of 1937 and was dedicated in October of that year, named for a long time dentist and civic leader in Rice Lake, Dr. Fred Tate. Dr. Tate served on the Rice Lake School Board for 30 years and orchestrated the purchase. He passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 1935. Tate Field served as the RLHS football field through the 1959 season. As school opened in 1943, the writers of the Northern Light school newspaper said they were tired of the Rice Lake Lakers name and thought it should be changed. A number of new names were suggested and were finally narrowed to “Vikings” or “Warriors”. The high school athletes voted, under the supervision of Coach Zimmerman, in favor of the Warrior designation. The first “Warriors” were the 1943-44 basketball team. (The football team remained the Lakers for several more years.) At the turn of the 20th Century, the Barron Bears were known as the Tigers. The Spooner Railroaders were known as the Braves. The Menomonie Indians were once known as the Maroons as late as into the early 1950’s.

The Rice Lake Warrior Football records and statistics have been compiled through

research from past issues of the Rice Lake Chronotype and from records kept

since 1993. There are still records that need to be researched. If anyone has

proof (Chronotype article or statistic sheet) of a record, please submit it to the

RLHS athletic office.
