ANALYSIS

The analysis noted the spatial characteristics of the Fenway: the existing distribution of commercial, residential, and parking. the lack of cultural institutions in the Fenway. the usage and effect of parking on the area. highlight the residential characteristic. show potential opportunities: taking advantage of opportune views. display an urban brand. leverage flow with a commercial site.

The proposal had four aims: define a new condition by consolidating parking. project the geographic program needs unto the program site. define goals for the project. establish building precedents for the structure.

The time course of different peaswas charted over several days,showing the degeneration of peapods over time. My aim was to understand the visual process ofdegeneration. Could the shell purposefully decompose first, allowing the seeds to spill out?

I used my graphic skillset to make fliers for the organization’s upcoming Expansion Committee and increase awareness about the financial undertaking.

PROJECT FIVE [PERSONAL] DROP HOUSING, NOT BOMBS

The independent prompt was to develop a deployable structurethat can be dropped from an airplanesurvive impactand have three spaces.

At first, the project was developed as a box. The simple geometry would, in theory, be punched in to create multiple spaces.

But, because a box has six faces, it would have a 1/6 chance of landing in the correct orientation. Furthermore, how couldthe deployable structure be moved into its correct orientation?

At the very least, the analysis showed that a design with a reduced number of faces was needed.

A cylinder possesses two Euclidean faces, and a wrapped face.

The cylinder has a 1/3 chance of landing correctly, at first glance. But, because of rotational symmetry the two circular faces could be considered equivalent.

So, we’re looking at a 1/2 chance of landing correctly. On either of the two sides, or on the wrapped face of the cylinder.

The design then became about how to allow for the proper orientation to occur: getting the cylinder to stand up if it lands on the wrapped side. By squeezing the two circularfaces, a slope could be formed that would tiltthe structure up.

The resulting form was redrawn and tested.

It could work, if landing on either face.

If landingon the wrap of the cylinder, how could the structure createenough momentaryfriction to stop fromrolling to a new location?

The structure neededcross-threaded tread to beerected by multiplepeople.

The simplest way to create three spacesis by the use of two partition walls. One majorspace, and two minor ones.

Then, the quantity of space was shown.

The door of a given base face becomes a shutter for the other.

The plan of the structure implies anambulatory path throughtwo different doors.

Hierarchy and space differentiation have been created. The structure is readyto be appropriated for use.
