I believe in joy. I believe in the promise of morning. I believe that Christ will come and wipe our tears away. I believe in hope. I believe in the life everlasting. I believe that Christ will come and bring a bright new day. Lord, in my heart, I believe.

When the darkness falls around me, in the still of the night, when shadows all surround me, faith will lead me to the morning light!

I believe in peace. I believe in a song of tomorrow. I believe that Christ will come and war shall be no more. I believe in God’s great love. I believe in the grace that unites us. I believe that Christ will come in glory from above. Lord I believe.

Scripture Romans 8: 31-39 Pastor Warren Danskin (Congregation joins on bolded text) If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life – nor angels, nor rulers - nor things present, nor things to come – nor powers - nor height, nor depth - nor anything else in all creation - will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hymn of Faith Children of the Heavenly Father LBW 474 Erik Whitehill, soloist (Stanza 1 will be sung in Swedish, congregation join at stanza 2) Erik Whitehill, soloist

Reflections Carole Lea Arenson

Scripture Luke 2: 29-32

Lord - now let your servant go in peace, according to your word; For my eyes have seen your salvation - which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles - and for glory to your people Israel.

Life Story and Message

Gospel Reading John 14: 1-7

Song of Assurance How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place – Johannes Brahms

How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea, fainteth for the courts of the Lord. My soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God. How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! O blest are they that dwell within Thy house. They praise Thy name evermore. How lovely is Thy dwelling place.

Richard William Lingwall August 1, 1938 - December 28, 2009 Richard William Lingwall passed away December 28, 2009 after a one month battle with gall bladder cancer. He was born on August 1, 1938 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa the son of William and Leona (Swanson) Lingwall. He grew up in Harcourt, Iowa where he first found his love for music. He began playing the piano for Sunday School when he was eleven and started playing the organ for church when he was in Jr. High. This continued for over fifty years. During high school he was editor of the Annual, played basketball, and played trombone in the band. He graduated third in his class in 1956 from Harcourt High School. He then attended Drake University where he obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in music education.

On July 9, 1966 he was united in marriage with Marilyn Shirley Schlake at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa by his uncle Rev. Dr. Reynold Lingwall. He began his forty year teaching career in Dallas Center, Iowa as the high school band director in 1960. He moved on to be the band director in Nevada, Iowa in 1966. Richard took his band to the Red River Expedition in Winnipeg, Canada, the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia, and New York City. While in Nevada two sons were born, Nathan Allan and Stephen James. In 1980 the family moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa where Richard became the band director for the elementary, junior high and high school bands. After five years the family moved to Casa Grande, Arizona where Richard was the high school band director until 2000. Richard was awarded the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers award for teachers who made a difference in the lives of their students.

Music was his vocation, avocation, and totally dominated his life. It is said that teachers often have a favorite student, but he always said that all of his students were his favorites. He thoroughly enjoyed working with all of them. After retirement Richard and Marilyn moved to Mesa, Arizona. Richard was very active in church music all of his life. He loved to travel and had visited five continents. In his retirement he volunteered much of his time at King of Glory Lutheran Church, Jordan Elementary School, Herberger Theater, Gammage Auditorium and Symphony Hall.

In his memoirs Richard stated, “I have had a very blessed, charmed and productive life so far, much of which is due to my one and only true love of forty-three years, Marilyn. We share the same interests and vocation, and compliment each other very well. Retirement is great, and I thoroughly enjoy life.”

Richard is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; sons, Nathan (Kendra) Lingwall, Stephen (Lynn) Lingwall; three grandsons, Chal Gomez, Wyatt Lingwall and Braeden Lingwall. He was preceded in death by his parents.
