And the best ones are usually not so much about the cars, but about the people who build, own and drive them, who restore and share them with the community, nurture them like best friends and then send them on to the next chapter in their histories. Richard Munz is one of those people. As a boy in Madison, WI, he was “fascinated by anything with a motor in it. When I was fourteen I saved up and bought a Cushman scooter; the village marshal gave me a special permit to use it for my paper route.” Munz has owned and driven everything from his first car at age sixteen, a 1940 Ford Standard Opera coupe, to several Ferraris to a 1932 Ford Bonneville roadster he co-owns and co-drives with racer-restorer Jim Busby. In 1984 he purchased a 1934 Ford roadster from the late Don Thelan, best known for the ZZ Top “Eliminator” coupe (Munz and Thelan participated together in that year’s Great American Race, finishing 14th). To house his growing collection Munz bought and restored a three-story building in Madison, in which he had worked as a teenager in the Fifties. More cars followed, including Tony Nancy’s personal ’37 Ford Tudor and hot rodding legend Tommy Foster’s ’32 roadster, which won the Outstanding Car Award at the first Detroit Autorama in 1953. They all have one important thing in common, says Munz: his personal philosophy. “I have always been a Blue Oval guy at heart, and I’ve always looked for cars with a story, with some kind of significance behind them. I have always bought stuff I liked, that I wanted to drive - never because I thought I could turn a buck. It has made for a very enjoyable life; I’ve shared the restoration and preservation of so many great cars with my friends and the public, met a lot of really wonderful people and made a lot of friends, and over the years have just had a grand time.” The sixteen classic and vintage cars offered from the Richard Munz Collection comprise a fascinating group representing approximately 30 percent of the Collection. With the exception of a 1949 Mercury custom and a Cadillac-powered 1949 Oldsmobile 88, all are Fords, classics every one, with a few surprises in the mix, as you will see. And every one of them has a great story to tell.

Built on a quality Paul Horton chassis, this 1932 Ford 5-window coupe is an all-Henry Ford steel original with plenty of charm and performance to match. Aside from its brilliant Yellow finish, the body is essentially stock, with all the trim and details that gave the original such timeless appeal. Beneath the louvered hood, a 350/350 HP Chevy smallblock and 350 Turbo Hydramatic deliver dependable performance, while below decks a dropped front axle, coil-over rear suspension and radial-shod Halibrands combine for a smooth ride. The clean Grey interior features custom handles, pedals and instrument cluster, power windows and a banjo-style steering wheel, with the added comfort of air conditioning and a hinged windshield for those hot summer nights.

Ford’s thorough refreshing of the 1935 lineup has only benefited from the decades since, as demonstrated by this exceptionally handsome 3-window coupe. Finished in Black with Red pinstriping on an all-Ford-steel body, its “getaway car” vibe is boosted by a subtle nose-down stance and Red adjustable spoke wheels with chromed caps and rings. The Mark Kirby-built 276 CI Motor City flathead V-8 and 26-tooth Lincoln-geared 3-speed make a great vintage powertrain. The car’s Tan interior is an attractive mixture of old and new, the original-style driver controls and dash complemented by pleated upholstery and quality carpeting (the rumble seat is likewise appointed), and a Koss sound system.

This 1935 Ford convertible is a colorful example of the rodder’s art, combining subtle pastel Yellow on its all-Ford steel body with a chopped Tan soft-top, and Red upholstery inside and on the rumble seat. Spoked chrome-trimmed wheels with wide Whitewalls, a matching spare and such details as dual horns and chromed exhaust tips add more period flare to the look. Power is delivered by a 300-horsepower 327 Chevy small block through a 3-speed Ford manual transmission. An original California car, this fine-looking ’35 is an excellent driver and the perfect choice for lovers of vintage-style open-air motoring.

From first glance to finest detail, this 1936 Ford 2-door sedan has it all. Formerly of the Dewey Cherek collection, it represents an investment of over $150,000 and the fruits of an expert body-off restoration. Best of all: it’s Ford through and through, with all Ford steel surrounding a 300-horse 302 backed by a C-4 3-speed automatic. Gorgeous Black paint emphasizes the car’s classic shape, which sits low to the ground and rolls on Goodyear Eagle radials. Driver controls are a mixture of old and new: a banjo steering wheel on a polished column, floor-mounted shifter and the cleanly designed original dash; occupants are treated to supple Burgundy Mercedes Benz leather, air conditioning, power windows, Art Deco bright trim and the comfort of an air ride suspension.

Seventy years after its introduction the 1940 Ford is still considered one of the best styling jobs ever to come from Detroit, yet in sedan delivery form it was also a true workhorse. The sedan delivery’s wide-ranging utility meant that most were eventually simply used up and thrown away, making surviving examples such as this exceptionally rare. Finished in Mandarin Maroon with a Tan interior, this unique Ford still runs under the power of its original 85 HP flathead V-8 and column-shifted 3 speed manual transmission. It has been very well maintained, the result of thirty three years with a caring owner, a rare and excellent example that will draw a crowd of admirers with every outing.

The 1949 Mercury introduced a fresh look and a clean break from Detroit’s pre-war leftovers and, thanks to its central role in the James Dean hit “Rebel Without a Cause,” went on to become an enduring favorite with customizers. The fabulous example offered here has been restored to full show-stopping grandeur by famed Arizona Street Rods, who laid down Black Sapphire paint over its mildly customized contours and fitted a matching Blue Mercedes Benz leather interior, power windows, air conditioning and air ride suspension, all of it finished to their typical high standards. The detailed engine room contains a fully dressed 350/300 HP Chevrolet engine mated to a 4-speed GM 700R-4 automatic for smooth, reliable cruising. This is a beautifully executed custom Merc in the traditional style.

Perhaps the only car to equal the 1932 Ford’s lasting popularity is the revolutionary 1940 model, which introduced several design and engineering advancements along with its exciting styling and became Ford’s fourth prewar classic. The nicely appointed 1940 model offered here is a fine example of Ford’s classic Opera coupe, finished in Folkestone Grey with a Tan interior. Flathead V-8 power, a 3-speed manual and 2-speed Columbia rear end form the top drivetrain for 1940, and bumper extensions, chrome “V8” tailpipe extension and wide Whitewalls on trimmed Red wheels are popular period styling additions. Interior appointments in this vintage beauty include an in-dash clock, AM radio and the original Ford script glass.

It has long been held that aesthetics are at the core of the hot rodder’s art, and this 1936 Ford Woody certainly makes that case. Built by a retired Washington state tugboat captain, it pays homage to the dawn of hotrodding with a mixture of faithful restoration and key performance touches. The car’s understated Cordova Tan paint is contrasted by the rich tones of all-new wood coachwork, a pleasing visual inherent in the original. A dropped front axle and larger diameter rear wheel/tire combo give it just the right attitude, one backed up in the power department by a flathead V-8 outfitted with a dual carb aluminum intake, finned aluminum head covers and matching air cleaner, all rare Thickston pieces, and a beehive oil filter. Handling the increased power is a 3-speed manual incorporating 26-tooth Lincoln gears. This rare and beautifully rendered ’36 Woody has been the subject of noted hot rod photographer and historian Peter Vincent, and was chosen by Street Rodder Magazine as a Top Ten Pick in May 1996.

The subject of a five year restoration, this 1934 Woody is an excellent example of Ford’s utility wagon that showcases the subtle changes made in that model year, including its reshaped grille and more powerful flathead V-8. Customers could order body-colored fenders for the first time in 1934; this example is finished in optional single-tone Coach Maroon with contrasting Yellow wheels, and also sports full curtains and the dual horns and cowl lights that were part of the $40 Deluxe package. An excellent driver that also possesses open-air charm, the Woody features an upgraded 239/100 HP 59A flathead V-8 with the new-for-’34 Stromberg 97 carburetor and dual exhaust for the kind of performance its contemporaries could only dream of. Prewar Ford aficionados will love this car.

Sixty years ago Oldsmobile introduced the stylish 1949 Model 88 with a new high-compression OHV V-8, heralding the beginning of the muscle car era and dominating NASCAR’s ovals at the hands of drivers like Curtis Turner, Red Byron and Bob Flock. Still, for some that was not enough, and before long the 88 had become a favorite platform for even bigger, more powerful engines, a trend that has never abated. Case in point: this rare 2-door slantback showpiece with 500 cubic inches of Cadillac power under that long hood. A Cadillac 3-speed automatic and coil-over rear suspension contribute significantly to its excellent drivability, and rich Forest Green Metallic paint and beautifully finished Tan interior add tremendous visual appeal to this superb old-school Detroit hot rod, a great rendition of a vintage Fifties performance recipe.

All-Ford steel and plenty of period-correct equipment combine to great effect in this sharp-looking 1936 Ford 3-window coupe. Its Maroon and Black finish is well complemented by a rare “greyhound” hood ornament, fully enclosed spare, dual chromed mirrors, Blue-dot taillights and chromed wire wheels. The clean interior and rumble seat are upholstered in period-correct Tan velour, and all driver controls remain as original. Beneath the louvered engine cover, a warmed-over flathead utilizes finned heads and dual Holley single-barrel carbs atop an aluminum intake manifold for extra power. It all comes together in a great driver and a rare example of Henry’s popular ‘36.

The number 427 has been associated with Ford engines and cars for decades, and Roush Engineering reintroduced that number to the automotive lexicon in the 2007 Roush 427 Mustang. With a supercharged 427 horsepower 4.6L V8 under the hood and sports-tuned suspension, this was the most powerful, best-performing Mustang offered by Roush to that time. One of only 1,025 built, this Red-and-White 427R shows fewer than 6,000 miles. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual, full Roush aero body kit, 18-inch cast chrome wheels with high-performance tires, special graphics and badging and a custom embroidered Red-and-Black interior.

An iconic automobile of the early Depression era, Ford’s Woody station wagon was a hard-working car that helped Ford Motor Company, and more than a few of its customers, navigate the long path to recovery. As Spartan as Henry Ford himself, this “four-banger” ’32 Woody is an extremely rare and excellent example, especially considering that, amazingly, it retains most of the original wood coachwork. Correctly restored and in very good driving condition, it is authentically painted in Tan with matching wire wheels and the requisite Black fenders, and includes side curtains for protection from the weather.

While Ford’s 1932 “Deuce” revolutionized the auto industry with the introduction of the new flathead V-8, the line also marked a giant step forward in the styling department thanks to Edsel Ford’s carefully conceived design. In contrast to the pointed simplicity of more basic models, the V-8 powered 2-door offered here is stylishly finished in two-tone Winterleaf Brown paint with pinstripe accents and Black fenders. Chrome-trimmed wire wheels and wide Whitewalls add a sporty touch, and the Tan interior features an engine-turned instrument bezel and inviting velour upholstery. Formerly of the Grant Oates collection and one of the finest examples of Henry Ford’s classic Deuce, the car is still powered by its original 221/65 HP flathead engine and 3-speed transmission.

Don’t be fooled by the worn look of this 1934 Ford 5-window coupe; the all-Ford steel V-8 classic is a solid runner with excellent mechanicals, an attractive and correctly finished interior, and tons of old-time charm. Its weathered patina and hand-lettered “Official Pace Car” signage add great interest and appeal for shows and vintage motoring events such as the Hill & Valley Tour in which it has been a participant. Powered by a 221/85 HP flathead, this remarkable 5-window coupe pegs the fun-meter every time out.

In the 1950s it was an integral part of the West Coast rodding scene, and five decades later this brash 1939 Ford coupe still cruises the boulevards with a 276 HP flathead and a full complement of rare vintage speed equipment, a rolling snapshot of an earlier time in the rodder’s hobby. Restored by Goodguy Jerry Hagens of Aledo, Illinois in the early 1990s, this flamboyant machine has been a part of the Munz collection for fifteen years. Did we say “brash”? Its Purple exterior finish is repeated inside in the two-tone Purple and White interior, which features pleated upholstery, a banjo wheel and a tach perched on the stock dashboard. Rare period speed equipment abounds: Vertex magneto, rare Sharp dual-carb intake and finned aluminum heads, a Halibrand quick-change and plenty of polish and chrome.

Imagine a 1932 Deuce Highboy roadster that is so finely wrought that Rod & Custom magazine makes it a cover feature while still in rolling chassis form. If you can, then you can imagine just how special this hand-built ’32 really is. Chronicled in the February 2007 issue of R&C, the car was conceived by helicopter news cameraman Bryan Smith and his brother Craig, to pass the time between calls to cover the news from the air. Based on early ‘60s rodding trends, the car uses many original parts, including the radiator shell, firewall and frame rails. Its 327 Chevy engine is topped with a 3x2-bbl Rochester carb setup and exhausts through Limefire pipes and under-chassis tubing. The all-steel Brookville body is finished in 1958 Oldsmobile Seafoam Green and capped with a Sid Chavers “Bop Top,” and the interior is highlighted by a prototype GM locomotive dash insert housing a unique vintage mechanical wind-up aircraft clock.
