A proud group of students attended the National Gallery of Victoria for a special showing during the holidays of their own paintings inspired by Van Gogh – The Seasons Exhibition. Many family members attended to hear a presentation by Gallery staff and our students about the nature of their project. We then got to view their works and an accompanying letter written by the students as ‘artists’ that helped explain what inspired their painting. We have shared some of these with you in this newsletter and hope to display them all again as part of our Arts Gala in October.

Student Led ConferencesOur Grade 1- 6 Student Led conferences will be happening next week on Tuesday August 1 and 2. A Signmee booking form went out today for all families to book a time. (This includes the Prep families who may book an interview slot with their child’s teacher.) We have found student-led conferences to be a valuable experience that have the potential to improve the communication patterns of both students and parents.

In a student-led conference, students learn how to reflect on their learning, evaluate their progress and communicate this information to their parents. Parents experience how to listen to their child speak as a learner, how to encourage growth and how to best help their child with specific problems. Below are some hints for parents attending these conferences – we hope you find them helpful.

HINTS FOR PARENTS• Express positive interest and anticipation about the

upcoming conference.• Listen and respond to your child.• Express pride in growth and progress.• Ask questions (below are some examples).• Be positive, offering to help in areas where

improvement is needed.• Recognise that students need to develop

independence in communicating progress – remember that the teacher will be there to facilitate and answer specific questions but will not take charge of the conference.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING THE CONFERENCE• Can you explain this to me?• How did you come up with this idea?• How have you grown in this area?• How can you improve in this area?• How can we help you at home?• What was important to you about this?• If you could do this work over again, how would

you change it?• What future goals do you have as a student?
