From the Pastor's DeskPastor Marc O'Neal

We have so much to be thankful for! Yes, 2020 has been a challenge, but even in

the midst of all this, we can give thanks to the Lord, for He is GOOD! Every good

and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.

Let us pray for our family and friends, our community, for the righteous

administration of justice, for peace in the streets, for those who serve and protect

both at home and abroad; but in our prayers, let us not neglect to give thanks to the

God from whom all blessings flow. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in

everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made

known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will

guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7) We have so

much to be thankful for! As this month progresses, I pray we can continue to

gather together in the spirit of what Thanksgiving is all about -- Giving Thanks to

the Lord! This world may be scary at times, but God has promised to never leave

us nor forsake us. He said, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and

do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua

1:9) This Thanksgiving, I am thankful to God for each of you! It is a joy and a

privilege to be your brother in Christ and serve along side of you in the cause of

Christ. Together, may our service to the Lord "overflow in many thanksgivings to

God!" (2 Corinthians 9:12) As the Apostle Paul would say, grace to you and peace

from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Many Blessings for the Camden Food Pantry!

First and most important is God’s guidance and blessings we have received to provide food to the people of Camden

County. God has been faithful to our needs when a freezer died and provided grant money from Dominion Power that

paid for a majority of the cost. God provided a long time need and want with a new refrigerator provided by a grant from

Albermalre Electric. The blessings continue with the people to help install the units.

There have been many changes to the pantry in the way we do things in serving the community. It now takes two days to

put together the “bags of food” and hand out the food thru a outside drive thru. All this is done to keep our elderly

volunteers healthy and to keep out recipients of the food healthy. On Mondays before pantry serving day, Beth Upton

has volunteered to “Head-up” the“four bagging” day at 3:00. We are trying to keep this number of volunteers to 4 to 5

people keeping ourselves socially distanced and/or wearing a mask when needed. On Pantry serving days the number of

volunteers is also kept at a small number. Because of the “limit” number of volunteers wanted, Beth Flythe really needs

to know if you want to volunteer or if you can not be present. Please contact her at 252-267-4937.

The blessings have continued by the community seeing what is being done to serve Camden County. Several people

have dropped off money and food. Many opportunities have also fallen in our laps by way of boxes of fruits, vegetables

and lately a box of a combination of meat, milk and vegetables. Food Lion is now selling “Holiday Boxes” and we just

received 41 boxes.

Thank you for your church support by way of the space to house the pantry. The board is very thankful for your prayers

and support of food and monetary donations. Our mailing address is Camden Food Pantry P.O. Box 2427 Elizabeth city,

NC 27906…..If you feel led to give to the pantry please make check out to Camden Food Pantry and mail to this mailing

address.

Ts and Ps

Recently there has been a public debate over prayer. Persons have been criticized

for offering “thoughts and prayers” (or "ts and ps") for victims of things like gun

violence while taking no action to address the problem. Sometimes in the process

prayer has been equated to doing nothing.

John Wesley was certainly an activist working to alleviate human suffering, but he

was also a person of prayer. It’s no wonder why. Prayer, Wesley said, “is the grand

means of drawing near to God”; it is “the breath of our spiritual life.” While

petition and intercession are forms of prayer, they are not the whole.

The focus of prayer is not on our requests, however urgent, but on God. Prayer is

how we remain in communication with God and grow in our relationship with God.

In his sermon “The Wilderness State,” Wesley says that “neglect of private prayer”

is the most common reason people lose their faith. Thanksgiving is fundamental to

prayer. For Wesley “thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost

essentially connected with it”. It is an expression of our gratitude to God for life

itself, for a new life in Christ, for all of the other blessings God gives us, and above

all for a divine lover that never fails.

We, of course, do turn to God with our petitions (for our own needs) and

intercessions (for others). With regard to petition, Wesley insists that prayer is

absolutely necessary “if we would receive any gift from God.” Here Wesley is

assuming the primary things we seek for ourselves have to do with salvation:

forgiveness of sins, new life in Christ, guidance in how to live faithful lives, peace,

joy, and love. For these promised gifts, our prayers are needed “not so much to

move God — who is always more ready to give than you to ask — as to move

yourselves, that you may be willing and ready to receive the good things he has

prepared for you.”

This does not mean Wesley thought it improper to pray for other things for

ourselves. Even more, he strongly advocated praying for others. Prayer for others is

an act of love, and regardless of whether the prayer is answered in the way we

prefer, it often means much to the person being prayed for that there are others who

care. But Wesley does insist that God answers prayers. He doesn’t try to answer

the question as to why some prayers seem to be answered and others seem not to

be, at least the way we want. Nor does seemingly unanswered prayer lead him to

question God’s love; God’s love is revealed in the cross of Jesus Christ and nothing

can take it from us. What he does to is recount the numerous occasions when prayer

was answered, including many miraculous healings.

For Wesley, the Christian tradition prayer is doing something, and it does make a

difference. It is not a substitute for other action; but neither is it inaction. At its

heart, prayer is communion with God.

If you have questions, askBeth Woodhouse or ButchFlythe

Billy Graham was once asked this question: "I’m dreading Thanksgiving this year.

It’s been a hard year for me, and when all our family gets together I’ll just feel like

a hypocrite pretending I’m thankful for anything. I’m even wondering if I ought to

go. What would you say to someone like me?"

I wonder how many of us are asking this question this year? Pandemic, recession,

riots, election fallout. I think it would be understandable is some of us don't feel

very "thankful" this year. But listen to these words from Rev. Graham:

"Families all over America will gather to celebrate Thanksgiving. And for many it

will be exactly that—a time to give thanks to God for all His blessings to us. The

Bible reminds us that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down

from the Father.” (James 1:17) But some, I’m sure, probably will feel like you do,

because life has been difficult for them and they find it hard to get into the

Thanksgiving spirit. Does this mean you ought to stay home and forget about

Thanksgiving? I sincerely hope not, both for your sake and the sake of your family.

For one thing, when life is hard it’s easy to focus only on the bad things and forget

all about the good things God has given us. But God has blessed every one of us in

ways we often overlook, and we need to be reminded of them. Take a few minutes

to list some of the good things in your life—and then thank God for them. In

addition, ask God to help you not only enjoy seeing members of your family

(including some you may not see very often), but to help you be a blessing to them.

Others may be going through difficult times also—or even worse. Learn to be a

good listener and encourager. The Bible says, “As God’s chosen people … clothe

yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. … And

over all these virtues put on love.” (Colossians 3:12,14)

UMYF News

October was a wonderful month for our Youth Group. We have been covering lessons on finding our

true identities, and how they are rooted solely in what "we are" according to God. The boys have further

been led by Pastor Marc studying a book by Tim Tebow, and Heidi has been leading the girls through a

book written by Sadie Robertson. We also took time to decorate pumpkins for our 3rd Annual Pumpkin

Decorating Contest.

November looks to be just as busy, with the big event being the annual Pilgrimage Weekend. This year,

instead of heading the Fayetteville, we will be local enjoying it virtually, hopping to different homes to

watch the sessions. There is also a fundraiser 5K Walk/Run on Nov 14th for Project AGAPE, and the

youth would like your support! They are asking for prayer, participation, and/or donations. See Pastor

Marc for details.

Giving Thanks at Home

“An attitude of gratitude” — that’s what we seek to instill in ourselves and in our family members. Thanksgiving lends

itself to helping us name the many ways we are blessed. The following suggestions may enable our families to focus not

just on being thankful for the food of the day, but also on true gratefulness for the many blessings experienced by our

families. Stopping to identify blessings doesn’t mean that life has been easy in the past year. Everyone experiences

difficulties and hardships. We can’t ignore the fact that hardships are part of life.

This year, consider using one or more of the following suggestions when you observe Thanksgiving in your home or

with others.

Many countries have a day of thanksgiving to celebrate the harvest of crops and the food provided by the land that

sustains us. Create a list of the foods you enjoy. Give thanks for the earth and the blessings of the world that God has

created.

Create a place tag for every person who will partake of the Thanksgiving meal in your home. On one side of the tag,

write the name of the person. On the other side, place a word or phrase from a verse of Scripture. Ask each person to line

up according to the verse of Scripture. This determines who sits by whom during the meal. Say the Scriptures together

after everyone has been seated.

Identify family members and close friends of your family who will not be able to be with you at Thanksgiving. Create or

purchase cards for each of these people. On Thanksgiving Day, invite all who are gathered in your home to sign and/or

write a note on the cards to those who are missing. Don’t forget to mail the cards on the Friday following Thanksgiving!

Make a blessing box. Ask different family members to write on slips of paper things for which they are thankful and to

place the slips of paper in the blessing box. Use the box as a centerpiece on Thanksgiving Day. Pass around the box, pull

out the slips of paper, and read the blessings.

Reflect on the past year. Ask each person gathered at your Thanksgiving celebration to share one thing that happened to

him or her during the past year for which he or she is thankful.

Take a photograph of all who are gathered with you to celebrate Thanksgiving. Label it “Thanksgiving 2020” and list on

the back the names of all who are there and one thing each person is thankful for this year.

Use the following as a litany of thanks prior to your Thanksgiving Meal:

"Today is Thanksgiving Day. We are grateful to be together at this time of the year. Hear these words from the Bible:

'The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and

established it upon the waters.' (Psalm 24:1-2) As we light the candles on this table, let them be a reminder to us of

God’s presence with us. Let us pray, 'O God for all the blessings we enjoy, we give you thanks. Help us look at the world

around us in such a way that we see your hand in creation and in those we meet. Help us be a blessing today to those

gathered around this table and in all our days to those we meet at home, at school, in church, and in our community.

AMEN.'"
