‘Sinbad the Sailor’ is one of the many stories in 1001 Arabian Nights. Sinbad is a sailor who has taken seven amazing trips, each one full of adventures. Below is a story of just one of Sinbad’s voyages.
Sinbad’s father has just died, and Sinbad decides to go to sea to find his fortune. He sails to what he thinks is an island. However, the land is actually the back of a giant whale. When Sinbad and his crew build a fire on the island, the whale wakes up and punishes them by diving down into the ocean. Sinbad is saved by a floating piece of wood. He holds onto it until he gets to an island with a thick forest. There Sinbad finds a king whose horse is almost drowned. The heroic sailor saves the horse and convinces the king to make him a trusted vizier.
One day Sinbad’s ship floats to the island. He gives the king gifts from the ship, and the king gives an even bigger treasure in return. Delighted with the treasure, Sinbad is able to return to his hometown of Baghdad and live an easy life.
Sinbad the Sailor’s adventures are part of a larger frame story. Sinbad the porter complains to Allah about his life and poverty. Soon afterward he meets Sinbad the Sailor, who tells the poor Sinbad of his amazing first adventure. At the end of the adventure, the sailor gives the porter a large amount of spare gold coins and requests that he come back the next day to hear about another adventure. The porter, of course, continues to come back, until he has heard all seven adventures.
