Holiday Art & Literature Banquet A series of brilliant performances will be held at the outdoor stage from 17:30-18:30 every Saturday and Sunday. Curated by the prominent Barbican Centre in London, this exhibition is a strong follow- up to its traveling Pixar Animation exhibition. All of the beloved classics of this century - from Jurassic Park to Lord of the Rings, from Popeye and The Simpsons to Astro Boy and The Incredibles - are frozen in time in “Watch Me Move: The Animation Show,” and will be waiting for you in Da Dong Arts Center. The exhibition is divided into six themed sections: “Apparitions,” “Characters,” “Superhumans,” “Fables & Fragments,” “Structures,” and “Visions,” These sections present the evolution of the world’s 150 years of animation history. The Greater Kaohsiung Area boasts abundant and unique humanistic resources that are incubated in its context of local environment and daily life. The resources constitute the essential concepts for the establishment of local cultural subjectivity; the ability to communicate with the world to manifest such unique cultural connotations is required. Therefore, the creativity of this exhibition centers on deriving cultural connotations from regional characteristics and applying the contemporary art forms as a communication method to develop more accessible and close-to-life contemporary art forms, thereby enabling visitors to experience the idea: “Life is art; Art is life.” Four subtopics are highlighted to present the exhibition: southern representation, southern images, southern experience and southern sounds, awaiting your discerning appreciation and enjoyment.

Belief in the Royal Lords, also known as the Wangye Belief, is especially flourishing in southern Taiwan, in places such as Donglong Temple in Donggang, Pingtung, and Madou Daitian Templ and Nankunshen Daitian Temple Usually, worshippers hold a one-off large-scale solemn sacrifice and incense-burning ceremony known as the “once-in-a-few-years prayer” when met with disaster or disease, and they may also invite the Royal Lords to come to the area and suppress the illness or hold a King Boat ceremony to send them off. This lecture will bring you on an investigation into the origins and the legends of Taiwanese belief in the Royal Lords(Wangye), as well as the profound mystery of the sending off of the Royal Lords.

The play is composed of 4 acts, each comprised of a group of 2 men and one woman, who play 18 roles, using simple theatric elements to display the confused and estranged interpersonal relationships of the city.

holiday art & literature banquet A series of brilliant performances will be held at the outdoor stage from 17:30-18:30 every Saturday and Sunday.

Curated by the prominent Barbican Centre in London, this exhibition is a strong follow-up to its traveling Pixar Animation exhibition.

Therefore, the creativity of this exhibition centers on deriving cultural connotations from regional characteristics and applying the contemporary art forms as a communication method to develop more accessible and close-to-life contemporary art forms, thereby enabling visitors to experience the idea: “Life is art; Art is life.” Four subtopics are highlighted to present the exhibition: southern representation, southern images, southern experience and southern sounds, awaiting your discerning appreciation and enjoyment.

taiwan inteRnational ViDeo aRt eXhibitionIn this era of ever-changing technology advancement and cultural concept innovation, video art is playing a role of growing importance in the domain of art. Consequently, for the Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (TIVA), apart from invited artists, an international call for artists is also held. Totally over 100 video works by artists from 27 countries have been submitted. This exhibition also marks the first partnership between the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and the Hong-gah Museum in holding an exhibition that displays only video works. This exhibition features the video works from the first and second TIVA exhibitions—“Dwelling Place” and “Eattopia.” From the 56 works on view by Taiwanese and international artists, viewers can see how the artists use the creative medium of video to subtly interpret and explore our collective memories about the different facets and hazards of modern cultures related to food and living environment.

shaDow liFe: ConteMpoRaRy aboRiginal photo-MeDiaWungguli, an Arnhem Land Djambarruyngu word, means “spirit” and “shadow” and came to describe photographic image. Shadows are our souls which we can never leave; nor can our shadows exist independent of us. The history of Aboriginal people is that of figures, of numbers and of shadows. Prominent Aboriginal figures that dot the historical Australian landscape carry a shadowy-halo edge of Aboriginality only seen and recognized by most people at certain fleeting moments of intense emotional, social and spiritual exposure. Shadow Life addresses these moments of intensity through the photo-based practices of nine international renowned contemporary Australian Aboriginal artists who embrace moving image and photography with all its directness, theatricality and immediacy by confronting stereotypes and acting out scenarios. The directness of photography allows each artist to engage with socio-political issues of Aboriginality and the shadow cast by the experiences of different communities rendered invisible by the vagrancies of dispossession. Each artist has been chosen because they make work that creates a space for personal and political considerations, sometimes tinged with a bittersweet humor. In command of their medium, these artists undermine the ethnographic legacy of photographic stereotypes with potent images that confront, assault and lacerate.

MeRging past anD pResent: 25 yeaRs oF yuan Jai’s aRt CaReeRBased on her rich knowledge of both Chinese and Western cultures, Yuan Jai is capable of appropriating elements of ancient paintings for her art. Yuan’s childlike and imaginative mind enables her to break all the shackles of conventional visual arts and continue experimenting with innovative subjects regardless of boundaries of time and space. Yuan received basic training in a traditional art academy, and then went to Europe to study Western art. She combined what she had learned over different times into something that could bridge the gaps between traditional Chinese painting and Western art forms. The KMFA especially holds this solo exhibition of Yuan, who is now at the age of 70, featuring over 100 Yuan’s works to cover each stage of her 25-year career. It is the first of its kind that provides such a complete picture of Yuan’s life and art. For both the artist herself and viewers, the exhibition is unprecedented and unparalleled.

beauties of our times - exhibition of Metalwork and Fabric art CollectionWhat kind of artifacts are left by a given background in time and space? The late Qing and early Republican period was a turbulent era in which old thought was replaced with new; the accoutrement, textile, and golden ornaments used by the Han of the time reflect the elegance of the era, and preserve its historic imprints. This exhibition allows you to savor the fashion aesthetics of the past Taiwanese through modern exhibition techniques used to display carefully- selected artifacts, and compares them with modern ones by re-annotating modern golden cultural and creative products, thereby revealing the rich meaning and design elements of traditional craft, and comparing the appearance of the two eras.

Children’s Room This exhibit is a children’s experience space suitable for the games of children aged 5 years and over, which changes “Kaohsiung” into a boy called “Kao Xiao-Hsiung”, accompanied by a little girl called “Kao Xiao-Mei”, introducing Kaohsiung through the eyes of companions and the identity of friends, reducing the distance between them and children, guiding them to learn through varied media interfaces and interaction. We hope that children and parents, students and teachers will enjoy the exhibition, and will also learn something about Kaohsiung.

kaohsiung 228 incidentThe museum is the first in Taiwan to use miniature scenes to create a virtual representation of the incident, in addition to the display of related historical materials. The exhibition is aimed to re-present this incident to visitors and make it an important lesson to all. Hopefully, visitors will understand the Kaohsiung 228 Incident and rethink about its historical significance, implications, and controversies. The exhibition can be a good starting point for people with different views to discuss and reflect on the 228 incident.

the american Dream - stories of taiwan Residents who studied in the u.s.A page from the history of Taiwanese studying in America is like the political and economic history of Taiwan- every student who studied in America brought America’s unique national status and culture to Taiwan, which had an important influence on Taiwan’s development. This exhibition looks back on the history of Taiwanese students studied in the U.S., and calls up their memories of studying in America through the things they used in America every day, and also gives visitors a glimpse into studying abroad, both past and present.

aRt oF hung ken-shenHung Ken-shen is an outstanding modern ink painter in Taiwan, who also dedicates himself to promoting the art development in Kaohsiung. Through his innovative ink paintings, he stays true to his ideals of art, creating an abundance of works of diversified styles. Displaying nearly one hundred representative works of Hung’s since his youth, this exhibition can be said to be the most comprehensive research exhibition of his art. Hung has tried different kinds of themes, ranging from natural landscape to social phenomena, and demonstrated his persistence as an artist in pursuing unlimited possibilities of artistic creation. His works serve as mirrors, reflecting different facets of this ever-changing and absurdity-ridden generation.

The exhibition is based on the concept that Taiwan and Okinawa are two islands with a lot of similarities in their natural environments and historical backgrounds and there are frequent exchanges between them. The works on view highlight the cultural differences and similarities between the two islands and their mutual influences on each other. Viewers can experience the life traces of the artists who come from different cultural backgrounds and learn to appreciate, reflect upon, and cherish more their own lives and cultures.

now anD when: austRalian uRbanisM“Though outback and bush myths remain seminal to our culture, there is no doubt that the Australian collective consciousness is now urban.” Said Ivan Rijavec, Co-creative Director of the NOW and WHEN Australian Urbanism exhibition. The exhibition at the Australian Pavilion at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale was the most successful project to date. Through the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia, the organizer Australian Institute of Architects had been continuing this successful project to tour the exhibition internationally since 2011. This exhibition features three of Australia’s cities as they are “NOW”, before dramatically representing futuristic urban environments as they may be “WHEN” we reach 2050 and beyond. Using ground-breaking 3D stereoscopic technology of which Australia is now the forefront, this exhibition showcases the Australian architectural imagination, allowing visitors to move around a range of existing and hypothetical urban environments. In the exhibition, architecture is used as a medium to express the psychological and emotional reactions to the present and the future, and the urban visions are presented in terms of spirit rather than practical solutions to problems.
