What is a mongoose?

A mongoose is a member of the family of small cat-like carnivores. Mongooses are widely distributed in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and southern Europe. There are more than thirty species, ranging from one to four feet in length. Mongooses mostly feed on insects, crabs, earthworms, lizards, snakes, chickens, and rodents. However, they will also eat eggs and carrion. Some species, such as the Indian mongoose, are popularly known for their ability to fight and kill venomous snakes. They are able to do this because of their agility and cunning, but typically avoid the cobra and have no particular affinity for consuming their meat.

What is a cobra?

• Cobras are venomous snakes Cobras generally live in tropical and desert regions of Asia and Africa.

What is a muskrat?

A muskrat is a semiaquatic rodent that can be found inboth fresh and saltwater marshes. Muskrats live in a

network of burrows in the banks ofwaterways or build houses of mounded vegetation in

open water.

What is a tailorbird?• Tailor birds are typically found in

open woodland, scrub and gardens. Tailorbirds get their name from the way their nest is constructed. The edges of a large leaf are pierced and sewn together with plant fiber or spiders web to make a cradle in which the actual grass nest is built. Common Tailorbird builds its nest in a shrub and lays 3-5 eggs. These 13 cm long warblers are brightly colored, with bright green upperparts and whitish underparts. The crown of the head is chestnut. It has short rounded wings, a short tail, strong legs and a long decurved bill. The tail is typically held upright, like a wren.

The Protagonist: Rikki-tikki-taviThe protagonist is the main character of the story.

Rikki Tikki Tavi is a young mongoose. Bravery and selflessness are two of Rikki's personality traits. They are what make him the protagonist of this short story. Rikki's actions prove that he isn't easily frightened. When the deadly dusty brown snake, Karait, slithers across his path, Rikki, rather than being scared,leaps onto the snake's back and gives Karait a paralyzing bite behind the head. This scene demonstrates Rikki's fearlessness.Another young mongoose might have been leery of this quick-moving snake, but not Rikki. Not only do Rikki's actions reveal his bravery, they also reveal his selflessness. The boy, Teddy, and his mother brought Rikki home when they found him nearly dead on a trail. Rikki repays their generosity when he saves their lives from the vindictive cobras, Nag and Nagaina. Risking his own life, Rikki follows Nagaina down into her cobra hole where ﾒ very few mongooses, however wise and old they may be ﾓ would dare to go. He does this because he knows that if he doesn’t kill the cobra now, she will continue to try to kill the boy Teddy. This willingness to do something really dangerous to protect the humans and the animals of the garden from Nagaina's venomous bite, shows his selflessness.

The Antagonists: Nag and Nagaina

The antagonist are the characters or force that act against the protagonist of the story.

Nagaina is trying to bite Teddy while he is at the Dinner table.

An English family, who have moved to a Bungalow in India, discover a young mongoose half drowned from a storm and decide to keep it as a pet. The young mongoose, called Rikki-Tikki, soon finds himself confronted by two dangerous, murderous cobras, Nag and his even more dangerous they might the next day) and that their children will need room and quiet. Nag goes to the bathroom to wait to kill the "big man", and mate Nagaina, who had had the run of the garden while the house was unoccupied. After that first encounter with the cobras, Rikki's first true battle is with Karait, a small venomous sand snake who threatens the boy. Although Rikki is inexperienced and the snake, because of its deadly venom and small size, is an even more dangerous foe than a cobra, the mongoose defeats him.At Nagaina's urging, Nag plans to kill the human family to get the house empty again so they can have free run of its garden again. She also reminds him that their eggs would hatch soon (as goes to sleep while waiting. Rikki grabs Nag by the head above the hood. Nag thrashes about furiously, and the noise wakes the man, who fires both barrels of a shotgun into Nag, blowing him in two pieces and almost hitting Rikki. Nag is thrown on the rubbish heap,where Nagaina mourns for him and vows vengeance. Rikki, well aware of the threat, enlists a tailor bird to distract Nagaina while he searches for her eggs. However, while he finds and destroys most of the brood, Nagaina arrives and threatens to kill the family's son with her poisonous bite, as the family is now in the garden. Alerted to the crisis, Rikki races to his family with the last egg. Once there, Rikki claims he killed Nag himself while showing the egg to distract Nagaina long enough for the man to pull the boy to safety. Nagaina snatches the egg and flees to her hole while Rikki pursues her inside. The underground fight is not described, but after an agonizingly long wait, Rikki comes out of the hole in triumph having killed Nagaina. With that victory, Rikki spends the rest of his days defending the family garden where no snake would dare enter.

The Plot: The plot is the story from the beginning to the end.

• In my opinion the themes found in this story are: Help others and you will receive help in return - Be kind and you will be rewarded -Be brave no matter how big or small you are -Be nice to everybody - Save a life whenever you can.

The Theme The theme is the message, moral, teaching or a lesson about life.

The ClimaxIt is the most exciting part in the story

• Rikki, well aware of the snake’s threat, asks a Darzee to distract Nagaina while he searches for her eggs. However, while he finds and destroys most of the brood, Nagaina arrives and threatens to kill the family's son with her poisonous bite, as the family is now in the garden. Alerted to the crisis, Rikki races to his family with the last egg.

The ResolutionIt is the end of the story.

• Rikki kills the cobras and destroys their eggs. With that victory, Rikki spends the rest of his days defending the family garden where no snake would dare enter.
