Brief Overview: Rio de Janeiro is not called the Magnificent City for
nothing. The juxtaposition of dense city and tropical rainforest
leaves the imagination with endless inspirations. You can find
yourself in the middle of a bustling city street one minute and the
next hiking up to an astounding overlook through the Tijuca Atlantic
Forest. See Rio from a bird’s eye with a ride in a cable car up to
Sugar Loaf Mountain and be sure to feel the benevolence of the
Corcovado as it towers over the city. If you are a nature lover spend
the day exploring caves, waterfalls, and beaches without having to
venture too far from the city. This will leave you plenty of time to
experience the nightlife of Rio, which is world renowned! Let the
rhythm of the Samba move you right out of your seat and get caught
up in the vibes of the music. Discover the passion of the people and
hear how certain communities have overcome intense poverty with
their entrepreneurial spirit. Lend a hand as you learn from them the
ways they see fit to transform their communities.
Out of town: Relax in the coastal towns of Paraty and Ilha Grande
and remember that life is a beach, depending on how you swing
things! The crystalline blue green waters will soothe your soul and
remind you of the importance of simplicity.
Visit the Amazon: Travel to Manaus, and embark on a riverboat expedition
along the Amazon River. Visit the “Meeting of the Waters,” where the black
water of the Negro River meets the brown water of the Solimões River, forming
the Amazon or stay in a jungle lodge to explore the fascinating Amazonia
environments.

RIO 301-101 PARATY: COLONIAL TREASURES, RAIN FOREST & BEACHES
3 Days/2 Nights
Originally settled by the Portuguese in the 1660, Paraty has maintained its
colonial feel with its original architecture and a virtually unchanged culture. The
city served as an exportation site for gold sent to Portugal. Paraty possesses
exquisite churches, cobblestone streets,
delicious restaurants, and does not
allow cars within the historic section of
the city, all adding to the charm and
allure of this UNESCO World Heritage
site. Visitors to the area have the
opportunity to enjoy the various cultural
and musical festivals typical of the city,
the vast and interesting colonial history,
as well as the nearby beaches and
forests.
Upon arrival in Paraty, spend the afternoon exploring your new surroundings by
bike. Check into the hotel and find dinner on your own. On your second day in Paraty embark on a schooner and set sail for
several of the most beautiful beaches and islands in the bay of Paraty, all surrounded by dense rainforest. The schooner will
make 3 stops for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. Although the exact locations tend to vary with each tour, depending
on weather conditions and to avoid the crowds. You will have the rest of the day on your own to enjoy Paraty. Lunch will be
served on board the boat.
On your third day in Paraty, embark on a Jeep tour to Waterfall and Cachaça Distillery. The jeep takes you inside of the
National Park of Serra da Bocaina. Visit the wonderful waterfalls (Poço da Lage Poço das Andorinhas and Villa Verde) where
you will have time to swim. Visit the old distillery of Cachaça, to see the way of making this typical Brazilian drink, famous for
the artesian production with the best quality in Brazil. Lunch will be on your own at Villa Verde restaurant located on the banks
of the river Perequê Açu. In the afternoon we will return to Rio and the ship.

RIO 302-101 ILHA GRANDE – RIO’S ECO TROPICAL ISLAND
3 Days/2 Nights
Ilha Grande, the largest island in the
bay of Angra dos Reis, includes over
one hundred beaches and is a large
attraction in Costa Verde. With over
187 square kilometers of beauty,
including beaches, waterfalls, and
mountains, it is only a one-hour boat
ride from Angra dos Reis or
Mangaratiba. Ilha Grande maintains
its fishing village atmosphere mainly
due to access only by boat and the transformation of the region into a State Park
and Biological Reserve.
The crystal clear waters are home to rich marine life, and the hiking trails are in
the middle of an Atlantic forest leading to creeks, rivers, and waterfalls. The
charming center of the island, Village of Abraham, guarantees a rustic
atmosphere with informal bars and restaurants. Leaving from the Village of
Abraham, the open paths of the forest lead to unexplored beaches and coves.
Upon arrival in Abraão Village on Ilha Grande, your guide will take you to your
hotel while showing you the main points of interest in the village. Enjoy the afternoon and evening at your leisure.
After breakfast on your second day on Ilha Grande, take a regular taxi boat to the Pouso Beach; followed by a hike to the
famous Lopes Mendes Beach, crossing pristine native forests, and arriving in some of the most beautiful sceneries of the
island. You will have time to relax on the sand and enjoy the sea. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of the historical sites of the
island, and visit “Praia Preta” and the natural pool of the aqueduct. Enjoy a morning of leisure after breakfast on your final day
on Ilha Grande. In the afternoon, transfer to the pier to take the bus back to Rio.

RIO 201-101 COFFEE FARM TOUR 2 Days/1 Night
Travel by bus from Rio de Janeiro to
Barra do Piraí and the Ponte Alta Farm, a
typical example of a 19th century coffee
estate that has survived the passage of
time. Built by the Manbucab, a Baron in
1815, the farm had a main house, slave
quarters, mill, and chapel all surrounding
the patio where coffee was spread to dry
under the sun. This historical tour will
teach you why the farms in this region
lost their prominence to the ones in São Paulo. In the evening enjoy a musical
treat, a special sarau (serenade) performed by a group dressed in 1950’s
clothes, singing tunes from the golden age of radio!
On the second day, you will have free time to explore the farm, ride horses, or
enjoy the pool. Just before lunch you will head to Vassouras, the town that was the social and political center of the region. Still
an emblematic example of rural Brazil, Vassouras has kept many colonial homes and churches from its heyday and is now an
important university center for agronomy. The tour will include a stop at Casa da Hera, a museum that recreates, with original
furniture, the lifestyle of the Coffee Barons. You will have free time for lunch on your own, before the transfer back to Rio.

RIO 109-203 DANCE INTO THE NIGHT
Evening
Your tour starts at
Centro Cultural
Carioca where you
will begin your
journey through
Brazilian music and
dance. This one hour
lesson will introduce
you to the two forms
of samba: the one
you see during
Carnival, which is
danced on your own;
and, samba de gafieira, a slower, more romantic tune, which is danced in pairs.
You will also learn a few steps of Forró, typical of the Northeast and the countryside.
After you have these moves down – or have at least tried – it will be just in time for the opening of the Centro Cultural Carioca
where you will have the chance to practice to live music, while sharing the dance floor with other Brazilians. This is a special
night dedicated to Charme, a rhythm inspired in the Soul, Funk, and R&B of the 80’s and 90’s. This is a perfect opportunity to
meet Cariocas – Rio’s natives – and let them teach you how to dance Charme. After the established time for dancing, students
may choose to return to the ship by bus, or take a taxi back at your own expense later in the evening.

great Amazonas River), and perhaps spot some pink dolphins accompanying you on your trip.

RIO 112-301 THE ENTERPRISE OF CARNIVAL WITH COSTUME WORKSHOP
Half-day
Were you aware that there are 90 samba schools in Rio with more than 100,000
dancers? Carnival is the most exciting event of the year where thousands of
people travel worldwide just to experience this electrifying atmosphere.
Rio’s Carnival derives from pagan celebrations of Ancient Greece, which
continued through European Middle Ages, arriving in Brazil through the
Portuguese colonization and enriched with rhythms that came with the African
slaves. The highlight of this popular party in Rio is the parade of the “samba
schools” in the “Sambódromo” (a unique carnival stadium). The world of the
“samba schools” of Rio remains hidden and mysterious to many, but here is your
chance to discover the secrets behind it.
We invite you for a rare
glimpse, to learn about Rio’s
Carnival, to experience the
magic of its creation, and the
business that makes it
possible. This tour will introduce you to the artistry and imagination involved
in the making of Carnival. You will witness the construction and production
process of more than 6,000 costumes and 15 floats. This experience
includes: a visit to the Pimpolhos and Grande Rios warehouses, exhibitions
about the history of Samba and the Carnival Parade, and a stop at the
Sambadrome. You will participate in a costume workshop, assisted by
children of the Pimpolhos Social Project to see how the costumes are made.
You will be able to apply those same techniques to a t-shirt to take home.
