HistoryColonial RioColonial RioLiberated RioRio as capital of Brazil Portuguese rulers were the first ones to rule Rio as they landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay on the 1st January 1502. The bay forms the opening of a river, hence the name Rio de Janeiro which means River of January. Rio developed economically as it continued to cultivate its traditional crop; sugarcane. Subsequently, gold and diamonds were found in the Mines Gerais area. After this discovery, many other European countries tried to capture Rio and gain a foothold and in 1763, the capital of the region was shifted from Salvador to Rio. During their thirteen year rule, Rio expanded economically and the city started spreading out to its edges, as new buildings started cropping up with modernized infrastructure. When the Portuguese left, Brazil finally achieved its independence. As Rio achieved independence from the Portuguese rulers, the city expanded politically, culturally, economically and architecturally. Public transportation in the form of horse drawn trolleys allowed transport to places like Botafogo, Sao Cristovao, Tijuca which were somewhat far from the city. Rio became the political, economical and cultural centre of Brazil. When Brazil achieved independence in 1889, Rio was named the capital. With years passing by, Rio has changed, in terms of infrastructure and financially. Central Zone was demolished to expand the city. Land was being reclaimed to build the Central Business District. Hills were being wiped out and were used to fill the marsh areas. The city was divided in three zones. North zone became a industrial area along with being the residence of the working sector while the South Zone was limited for the wealthy people. In the 1960s the capital of Brazil was moved from Rio to Brasilia and later to Sao Paolo, to reduce the economic and financial pressure on Rio. Political power was moved to the interior of the country. Today along with its different ethnic groups, Rio is making its presence felt in the industrial, service and tourism sector. City ClimateRio has aTropical savanna climate. Rio is in a tropical zone, and the weather is typically hot and humid. Cool ocean breezes temper the temperatures in the area.

Temperature: Summer months of December to March are very hot, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 35 to 39C (95 to 100F). During the rest of the year, temperatures range between 20 to 30C (68 and 86F). The annual average temperature is 23C (73F).

Average Annual Precipitation:1,080 mm (43 in), but some of the higher elevations get more than 60 inchesGuanabara Bay is highly polluted. Throughout the year, many of Rio's beaches, including the internationally known beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, are off limits to swimmers because of high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. Poor sanitation in the favelas lead to the proliferation of many diseases.Scenario to pop culture icons like Michael JacksonsThey Dont Care About Us music videoand the Academy Award nominated movieCity of God, Rio de Janeiros favelas are the most famous slums in the world. Like most precarious settlements in Latin America, they spread when industrialization in the region drew country workers into town in the 1950s, and the lack of affordable housing in the city and good mass transportation to live outside of it made them settle wherever they could find a spot (here, on the slopes of the city's hills). They later stayed there as development generated wealth for the few who already had it, a constant in this part of the world.

By the 1970s 13% of the citys population lived in slums, and the number kept rising until reaching 22% of the population now (1.4 million people from a total of 6.3 million, according to figures from the City Hall Housing Office).
