Regional Integrated Sciences & Assessments

RISA supports research teams that help expand and build the nation’s capacity to prepare for and adapt to climate variability and change.

Central to the RISA approach are commitments to:– Process– Partnerships– Trust

Competition 1: RISA Existing Regions

The RISA program is soliciting proposals for four existing regions in FY2016:

• Alaska• California/Nevada • Carolinas: North and South Carolina, could also

include southern Virginia for relevant issues• Southeast: Georgia, Florida, and Alabama

Proposal due date: September 23, 2015, 5 pm. eastern

Competition 2: RISA New Regions

• Mid-Atlantic: To include the Chesapeake Bay watershed (could include Delaware, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia or a subset thereof)• Midwest: To include a subset of the region of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri (2-3 states would be a manageable RISA region); note that the Great Lakes watershed is already covered by an existing RISA team.

Proposal due date: December 15, 2015, 5 pm. eastern

NCDC's six Regional Climate Services Directors (RCSDs) support the development and delivery of a wide range of place-based climate science and information products and services to help people make informed decisions. RCSDs regularly communicate with stakeholders about climate information needs, and help build and strengthen active partner networks with public and private constituents. http://www.rcsdhome.org/

Interagency Partnerships

• RISAs are part of an expanding landscape of federally-supported climate science and service networks, which also includes USGS Climate Science Centers, USFWS Landscape Conservation Cooperatives, and USDA Regional Climate Hubs.

• Coordination among these groups happens at federal and regional levels.

• See 4-pager at RISA website (link below)

Costs

Core RISA team work: • $500,000-$700,000 per year for up to 5

years.

Depend upon annual appropriations from Congress and NOAA/CPO priorities

Review criteriaRelevance score

• relevance to program objectives• applicant’s approach for engaging decision makers and building networks of

relationships to help support decision makers with scientific information• sharing data

Technical merit:• scientific merit and innovativeness• applicant’s credibility in capacity-building approaches• how well the proposal clearly identifies an institutional framework for

implementing the research articulated.

Qualifications of investigators• includes the PIs’ record of collaborating with decision-making communities.
