Basedonthefundamentalsofdesignandengineering,thisexcitingworkshopfocusesontheplayfulbutwell-considereduseofmaterials.Withuniqueopportu-nitiesforbrainstormingandproblemsolving,eachweekbringsanewdesignchallenge(i.e.,buildatwo-wheeledracecarthattravelsdownaninclinedstring,oruseaircompressiontopoweraplane).Participantsuserealhandtoolsandworkwithavarietyofmaterialslikewood,recycleditems,Legos,paper,cardboard,metal,rubberbands,wireandfabric.Astheyhavefundrawing,experimenting,testingandbuilding,studentsincreasetheirscientificawareness,gainknowledgeofthedesignprocessandbuilduponbothtwo-andthree-dimensionaldesignskills.

FromKingKong’swrestlingmatchwithanobnoxiousT-RextoGromit’sfrenziedchaseonamodelrailroad,theprocessofbuildingamovieframebyframehasgen-eratedincrediblecinematicimages–despitethefactthattheresultingdynamicac-tivityissimplyanillusion.Eachindividualmovementisrecordedandthenprojectedataspeedthatfoolstheeyeintoseeinguninterruptedmovement.Studentsinthiscourseformproductionteamsinwhichtheyassumetheroleofcameraoperator,setdesignerandstoryteller.Usingavarietyoftwo-andthree-dimensionalmedia,theygoontocreateabelievablerealityasseeninseveraluniqueshortdigitalvideoexperiments.Bytheendofthesession,studentswillhavelearnedtocombinetheimageswithsoundandproducedaDVDtosharewithfamilyandfriends.
