Aug. 19.-Tha decided dull- ness of today's ' stock market was evi- dence of the spirit of caution developed in the minds of operators by the reac- tionary tendency developed yesterday. The hardening of the rates for money now seems Imminent by renson of the in- ception of tha movement of currency on a large seals to the Interior. The abund- ance cf tha crops to be moved and the very actlvo conditions of business, which are themselves Instruments of prosper- ity, promise an extra requirement on New York reserves. The extent of this re- quirement can only be measured by Its actual development, and now that tho demand has set In, It is likely to proceed steadily to the maximum. The rise in' the rates for call money even without reaching the proportions of a stringent market.' has an almost Inevit- able effect -on borrowing for speculative purpose. Stocks on the margin at the present high level of prices are naturally solicitous therefore of the developments of the Immediate future. The bank statement reflected only a small | part of the expected decrease In cash reserves, but tho week's activity In the stock market resulted in some ex- pansion of the. loan account, so that the Increase In the deposit Item Increased the reserve requirement In, proportion. The net result was a shrinkage of about $3,- 500,000 In the surplus of the banks. The news from Portsmouth opened tip the possibility of some important develop- ment 'In peace negotiations during the Sunday Interval and the great doubt as to what its nature might be added to the cautious disposition of the operators. ' The closing of the London stock ex- change subtracted something from the usual activity of the market. The small declines of the first hour were recovered after. the appearance of the bank state- ment. .\u25a0The closing tone was firm. - | Total' sales bonds, par value, $1,400,000. Loses His All in a Fire at Goldfleld, Where Ho Has a "Permanent" Position Digging Tunnel P.. (I. Egbert, who has the contract for driving the shaft and tunnel on the Goldfleld Wild Horse property la Oold-j Egbert dolefully related the Incident by letter to . headquarters and k re- marked that as he wits convinced. from the character of ' rock encountered he would have ' a lifetime job he would arrange his personal effects bo that there would be no future fires iv his vicinity. r About all Egbert had left was tha clothing on ! his back and a few letters of recommendation ' which he prized highly, this latter constituting bis aols occasion for congratulation^ At this season of the year If there) Is anything one wants to get away from at Goldfleld It Is fire, as the tempera- ture Is easily compared with another place not ' usually mentioned In pollta society. The property is nearly three miles east of Goldfleld and It was necessary, to keep a store of supplies on tha ground. A large supply of provisions was installed. Next morning 1 on com* Ing up from the shaft Egbert discov- ered that all that was left of his tent, provisions and clothing was a pile of embers and smoke. As he had taken the contract for a stated turn the loss waa personal and fell upon him alone. ' He took the contract to drive a tun* nel and sink a shaft tvn the Ooldfleld Wild Horso property. After sizing up the character of the rock he took the contract at a very close figure and started a crew of, men to work. ; . . New York Stocks

ByAssociated Press.NEW YORK.Aug. 19.-Tha decided dull-

ness of today's'stock market was evi-

dence of the spirit of caution developedin the minds of operators by the reac-tionary tendency developed yesterday.

The hardening of the rates for moneynow seems Imminent by renson of the in-ception of tha movement of currency ona large seals to the Interior. The abund-ance cf tha crops to be moved and thevery actlvo conditions of business, whichare themselves Instruments of prosper-ity,promise an extra requirement on NewYork reserves. The extent of this re-quirement can only be measured by Itsactual development, and now that thodemand has set In, It is likely to proceedsteadily to the maximum.

The rise in' the rates for call moneyeven without reaching the proportions ofa stringent market.' has an almost Inevit-able effect -on borrowing for speculativepurpose. Stocks on the margin at thepresent high level of prices are naturallysolicitous therefore of the developmentsof the Immediate future.

The bank statement reflected only asmall |part of the expected decrease Incash reserves, but tho week's activity Inthe stock market resulted in some ex-pansion of the. loan account, so that theIncrease In the deposit Item Increased thereserve requirement In,proportion. Thenet result was a shrinkage of about $3,-500,000 In the surplus of the banks.

The news from Portsmouth opened tipthe possibility of some important develop-ment 'In peace negotiations during theSunday Interval and the great doubt asto what its nature might be added to thecautious disposition of the operators.'The closing of the London stock ex-change subtracted something from theusual activity of the market. The smalldeclines of the first hour were recoveredafter. the appearance of the bank state-ment..\u25a0The closing tone was firm.
