New York Stocks
ByAssociated Press.NEW YORK.Aug. 19.-Tha decided dull-
ness of today's'stock market was evi-
dence of the spirit of caution developedin the minds of operators by the reac-tionary tendency developed yesterday.
The hardening of the rates for moneynow seems Imminent by renson of the in-ception of tha movement of currency ona large seals to the Interior. The abund-ance cf tha crops to be moved and thevery actlvo conditions of business, whichare themselves Instruments of prosper-ity,promise an extra requirement on NewYork reserves. The extent of this re-quirement can only be measured by Itsactual development, and now that thodemand has set In, It is likely to proceedsteadily to the maximum.
The rise in' the rates for call moneyeven without reaching the proportions ofa stringent market.' has an almost Inevit-able effect -on borrowing for speculativepurpose. Stocks on the margin at thepresent high level of prices are naturallysolicitous therefore of the developmentsof the Immediate future.
The bank statement reflected only asmall |part of the expected decrease Incash reserves, but tho week's activity Inthe stock market resulted in some ex-pansion of the. loan account, so that theIncrease In the deposit Item Increased thereserve requirement In,proportion. Thenet result was a shrinkage of about $3,-500,000 In the surplus of the banks.
The news from Portsmouth opened tipthe possibility of some important develop-ment 'In peace negotiations during theSunday Interval and the great doubt asto what its nature might be added to thecautious disposition of the operators.'The closing of the London stock ex-change subtracted something from theusual activity of the market. The smalldeclines of the first hour were recoveredafter. the appearance of the bank state-ment..\u25a0The closing tone was firm.

The property is nearly three mileseast of Goldfleld and It was necessary,to keep a store of supplies on thaground. A large supply of provisionswas installed. Next morning1on com*Ing up from the shaft Egbert discov-ered that all that was left of his tent, provisions and clothing was a pile ofembers and smoke. As he had takenthe contract for a stated turn the losswaa personal and fell upon him alone.
