I imagine some (most?) of those reasons fall into the negative category---a sense of unfulfillment, reaching a financial ceiling, conflict. There is nothing negative within the life and mission of Resurrection that has led me to seeking a new call. In contrast, I felt free to seek a new call because this congregation is healthy. It is by and large financially stable, major projects have been completed, we are deeply and theologically engaged in our Bible studies, worship, and service. I am confident that in the nine years we have journeyed together, we have learned much from each other. We have tried new things, and some of those new things have become a part of who we are, like Change for Good and prayer candles. We have become better Bible readers through intentional Bible study and Grown-Up Vacation Bible School. We have sought new ways to serve the hungry in our midst, allowing them respite and relationship with a few chairs, a pot of coffee, and some cookies. We have celebrated the daily activity of the Holy Spirit stirring us up and inspiring us as witnesses through a simple red medallion. I am proud of the walk and the work we have shared. I am so grateful for all this experience has been. What a joy it has been to love you, and to be loved by you. What a gift it has been to baptize you, marry you, confirm you, to sit by your hospital beds, to counsel you in your pain and hurt and confusion and grief, to pray with you and for you, to forgive you, to be trusted by you, to be with you and your families in all the vagaries of life and in the sorrows of death. Being a pastor is like nothing I’ve ever known before. How blessed I have been to have known it with you. Thank you. God bless you! In peace, Pastor Sue

The reasons pastors seek a new call is probably as varied as there are pastors. Change for Good Change for Good developed a new feature in June—an anonymous donor offered to match what-ever was in the next jar counted! That may happen again as we never know what the Spirit will do! By publishing time June change for good jars had provided partial funding for a microloan for a woman, an energy efficient cook stove, a girl’s school uniform, food for two refugee families for a week, clinic visits for two children, and 7,000 water purification tablets. Check the board in the narthex to see what “Change for Good” has done so far this year!

Still needed are 3 can openers, 4 bags of chocolate chips, 5 nail clippers, 6 combs, 5 containers of mouth wash, 16 pocket sized containers of hand sanitizer, and 4 containers of liquid hand soap!

Food Pantry News:

In June, 341 families visited our food shelf, collecting food for 820 people. Your food donations help fill our shelves. Thank you for your steadfast support of this ministry. Any additional cash contributions to the food bank over and above your regular (general) giving will help this ministry continue. With Bill Bahleda leaving, more food pantry volunteers are urgently needed! We thank God for his abundance! He has given us resources in the form of work-ers and money. A big thanks to Bill for his leadership and volunteer hours1

HELP WANTED TREASURER

Are you a member who is comfortable working with numbers? Do you have experience in using software for your personal or business needs?

Are you willing to learn new software, specifically Shepherd’s Staff, Payroll Mate, and Excel? Are you interested in joining RLC’s management circle and providing the behind-the-scenes financial work that

enables the missions of RLC to be carried out? Are you willing to contribute time for the good of the congregation?

In short, are you interested in the office of Treasurer of Resurrection Lutheran Church? The RLC treasurer is required to be an adult (confirmed) member of the congregation, but need not be on the Congregation Council. The newly elected and carry-over members of the Council have found that none of them is interested in taking on the office of treasurer. The current treasurer, Mike McMullen, announced over a year ago his intention to not serve a term beyond this year. Therefore, the Congregation Council, as it will be constituted as of July 1, is looking for a congregation member outside the Council to be our treasurer. The responsibilities of the treasurer are contained in the congregation’s by-laws: “The treasurer shall keep the books of account of this congregation. This person shall receive all funds and disburse them properly, making monthly remittance of benevolence and partnership receipts.” Procedures and processes are in place for carrying out the treasurer’s responsibilities. A new treasurer will not have to reinvent them. Several people perform specific functions which makes the treasurer’s own required activity easier. Receipt of all funds is recorded by the counters. Deposits are made by the office manager. The contribution recorder enters the information required to provide the quarterly and annual reports for income tax purposes. The office manager also mails signed checks. A Treasurer’s Manual will be completed by the time a new treasurer is selected. The treasurer estimates the following time requirements: Processing bills once per week 1 -1.5 hours Preparing payroll on last day of the month .5 hours Preparing partnership checks when

month-end information is available .5 hours Monthly reconciling of bank accounts and preparing of reports 2 hours Attend monthly council meeting 1–1.5 hours

The council hopes to elect the treasurer at the July 14th meeting; if you are interested

please notify council before that meeting

OUT AND ABOUT IN GOD’S WORLD

As we all now know, our own Pastor Sue will soon be saying her goodbyes 17 July. For the last decade she has been our leader, our pastor, and or friend to every one of us from toddlers to the oldest among us. She has not only a string of accomplishments within RLC (the church itself – boiler, entry, etc.), but in our out-reach (Change for Good, Daniel’s well, a vibrant food pantry.) Her involvement in community affairs has been an exemplary representation of our church and its mission. We will all miss her, and it is understand-able to want to move closer to one’s offspring.

My good friend and RLC member Billy Johnson began the 4th of July hot-dog giveaway a number of years ago – it is heartening to see that activity not only continue but to grow annually. I was one of many members to witness Admiral Dan’s change of command ceremony, as we all wish Dan and Courtney Abel a safe journey and continued success. Randy’s Rib Shack is in to its second successful season, and Sutak’s secret recipes have earned the kudos of tourists such that the “Shack” is rated 7 of nearly 50 eateries in the oft-referenced “Trip Advisor.” Good job Randy!

Religious Tidbits By Jack Cadigan Fifty six years ago we docked in Bordeaux France for a week. At a wine-tasting reception a French officer recommended that I visit St. Emilion which was only some 30 miles away, as being the location of the finest French red wine. I rented a motor scooter and arrived there via all “country roads” nearly two hours later. It was a beautiful small (couple thousand) stone village built on a knoll surrounded by vineyards. Shortly thereafter my scooter broke, and I found a shop and explained my problem. Of course no one spoke English. I (spoke French, back then) had him contact the rental company and began exploring the village on foot. Inside I discovered steps down, so naturally I took them. At the base was obviously the entry into the catacombs. (I later learned they stretched for miles) Along each side, three deep, were carved “shelves” in the stone, each holding human skeletons. It was pretty dark without going very far, so I soon returned from this holy place. Many think of the catacombs of Rome as places of worship for early Christians suffering under the persecutions of ancient emperors. In fact, there are many catacombs in Rome (also in Paris) containing the remains of Jews, other religions and pagans. Because of the lack of burial space in Rome, cremation was common for many centuries B.C. and a while A.D. Early Christians, because of the promise of Resurrection, wished to keep the remains of their departed intact, and therefore buried their dead in the catacombs. Regular worship was not conducted in the foul odors of the catacombs, but in private dwellings to avoid detection and persecution. Worship now in ISIS Islamist terrorist occupied lands must now be conducted, if at all, in hiding for fear of beheading or other cruel deaths. Let’s not forget to pray for our persecuted brethren.
