JJ] BRENTWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL “Speak”

We always say our kids speak a different language at times. Sometimes, even our own middle school administration

does! So as you prepare to be a well-informed middle school parent, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with

some of the commonly used terms around Brentwood Middle.

1: 1 Chromebook

Each of our students will be assigned a Chromebook for the school year once parents and students have completed all

their registration forms. Students will take their Chromebooks to and from school to complete their schoolwork. We will

have a WCS technician at school to provide technical support during school hours. Students are expected to have the

computer completely charged daily and use it appropriately for academic purposes only. The Chromebook will

automatically use the WCS filters and firewalls when working on and off the BMS campus.

Agendas

Agendas are given out to students the first day of school and serve as student planners. Students are expected to record

daily assignments in their agendas. Parents should be sure to check this document for the Code of Conduct, demerit

system, school attendance policies, and the dress code. Agendas are to be with students at all times throughout the school

day.

A.I. D. (Academic Intervention Detention)

A.I.D., or Academic Intervention Detention, is a program that we have implemented at BMS to serve as a tool to help

students remain accountable for their work while also providing them an opportunity for a second chance at completing

work that may otherwise go missing. A.I.D. happens one day a week after school, and a student may be assigned to A.I.D.

if they match one of two criterions, either missing two or more assignments in one class, or failing a class due to missing

work. The student will be notified by their teacher and the parents of that student will be notified by the school.

Focus

Focus is a dedicated study time set aside in the school day when students can work on their homework and receive help

from their teachers. That is offered in sixth, seventh, and to most eighth-grade students who are not taking a fifth

academic class. During this time, teachers will meet with students to provide extra help to students who need an extra

boost according in reading comprehension or mathematics according to STAR math and reading assessment screenings.

OER (Open Educational Resources)

OER stands for Open Educational Resources and is a dynamic digital library of educational texts, media, virtual labs,

interactive activities, and other digital materials. OER materials provide up-to-date, virtual resources to support teaching

and learning in today’s progressive environment such as interactive formative assessments with immediate feedback,

simulations, and science and engineering investigation suggestions. These materials provide students the opportunity to

learn in a flexible environment by exploring texts, organizing information, and collaborating with peers while they create

projects and products to showcase their learning. Currently WCS uses these teacher resources to support our new TN

science and social studies standards in place of a student textbook.

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support)

PBIS is a school-wide model for common expectations of respect, responsibility and diligence. Teachers will reinforce

these expectations when students demonstrate them by giving students “BMS Bucks”. This school-wide behavioral

intervention model provides support for student who may be struggling behaviorally or academically.

Pod

Pod is the term used to designate a location of a group of classrooms. Related Arts classes are located in the E Pod; 7th

Grade is located in Pods A and B; 6th Grade is located in Pods C and D. Subject to change due to classes in the STEM

building.

Related Arts

Related Arts classes are enrichment classes that are offered to all grade levels at Brentwood Middle. Students typically

rotate through classes on a nine-week, semester, or yearly basis. Courses included, but not limited, in enrichment are:

Drama, Physical Education, Spanish, Media, Art, Chorus, or Music.

Schoology

Schoology is a learning management system or LMS which helps transform the traditional classroom to a twenty-first

century learning experience. It allows teachers and students to share digital information, personalize learning for each

student, and provide feedback for each lesson or activity. Many other technological tools are integrated within Schoology

to make it a collaborative virtual classroom for teachers and students.

SRO

The School Resource Officer at Brentwood Middle provides a comforting level of security throughout the BMS campus.

STARS

STARS is the acronym for Students Taking a Right Stand. This school-based assistance program helps schools tackle

tough issues that threaten the emotional, psychological, and academic well-being of each student. Through assemblies,

classroom presentations and group/individual counseling sessions, STARS assists schools in preventing and confronting

these very difficult challenges.

Thrive

THRIVE is a forty-five minute class designed to empower students to take ownership of their learning. Teachers review

weekly student performance data to design Open and Closed sessions to support and enrich student learning. Students

receive a THRIVE schedule each Monday and are encouraged to choose the THRIVE sessions that will have the greatest

impact on their learning.

VAC

VAC stands for Viking Athletic Club. The purpose of VAC is to support fundraising for all sports. The VAC promotes

student participation, school spirit and commitment to Brentwood Middle School athletics.

Vikings of the Month

Each month BMS recognizes students from each grade who stand up for their beliefs, act responsibly, use self-control,

and treat others with respect and kindness.

VNN

Viking News Network is the name given to a program that students see three times a year. The segments showcase

student created videos on a variety of topics. The pieces are recorded and edited by a team of sixth, seventh, and eighth

grade video students.

chess. Students can play for fun or sharpen their skills for tournament competition. Being a member of the chess club helps students

improve problem solving and concentration skills, as well as provide a positive environment for student interaction.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION (DI)

Destination Imagination is an activity that encourages teamwork, creativity, divergent thinking skills, and fun while solving a

problem. Teams typically consist of five to seven members. Competitive teams are judged in three areas: a long-term problem

solution, the style in which the solution is presented, and spontaneous problem solving. There are no right or wrong answers. All

solutions are acceptable within the problem guidelines. Each long-term problem has limitations, a cost limit, and a time limit. Within

this framework, teams attempt to produce solutions and present them in a creative and humorous way. No outside assistance is

allowed; all ideas and efforts must be student generated. Competition ranges from regional to state and international

levels. Historically, Brentwood Middle School has had teams qualify for all three levels of competition.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB (COMMUNITY GARDEN)

Green Thumbs unite! Help beautify Brentwood and make a difference in our community by learning how to grow your own herbs,

flowers and vegetables. It is our hope that as we expand from just growing plants, we can also make a difference in our community by

tackling recycling of both paper and plastic here at Brentwood. The club meetings and other needs to be determined.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES

Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets every Thursday morning in the theater at 7:20 a.m. Our club meetings typically include an

icebreaker and student led devotional. FCA is open to all students at Brentwood Middle School. You do not need to be a member of an

athletic team to participate in FCA; all are welcome!

LITERARY CLUB

BMS Literature Club meets twice each month on Tuesdays or Thursdays to share and discuss original stories, poems, drawings, or

music. Students may also share any of these genres from other artists whose work they particularly admire.

MATH TEAMS

Sixth Grade: Selection for the math team is made each year from top three sixth grade math students. The students compete in the

MBA 6th Grade Invitational and the MTSU State Contest. The Brentwood Middle School Math Team consistently ranks among the

performance. PowerHouse is an auditioned, co-ed vocal performing group that includes 20-25 students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade

who are interested in making music together. Auditions will be held in August.

QUIZ BOWL

Quiz Bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history,

literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. The defining feature of quiz bowl is the use of a “buzzer system” that lets players interrupt the reading of a question when they know the answer. That element adds a dimension of confidence,

anticipation, and rapid recall to a game about knowing facts. (NAQT website) Students compete in three tournaments throughout the

year. Weekly practices and study sessions are expected of all team members. Members are determined based on ability and interest.

ROBOTICS

Teams of 3-4 students build basic Vex IQ lift-bots. They use these basic robots to practice programing and using remote controls as

well as basic robot coding using RobotC. The teams then use the engineering design process to redesign and rebuild the robots to best

compete in the Vex IQ game of the year. They continue to hone the robots and their skills in preparation for Vex IQ tournaments in

late fall and early spring semesters. They document this process in an engineering notebook. The expectation is that each ream will

compete in at least one Vex IQ tournament. All robot building and practice will be done through fall semester related arts classes.

The STARS Student Executive Council is comprised of approximately 20 students from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades who

work directly with a Core team of teachers to determine worthy projects. Students interested in being selected for the council must go

through an application process which includes writing an essay and acquiring Core team recommendations. The SEC plays a key role

in promoting a drug-free, alcohol-free, and bully-free environment in the halls of Brentwood Middle. Each year they promote these

concepts through activities such as Red Ribbon Week and school-wide assemblies and activities.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)

Student Government provides a forum for student expression, to inform students and faculty, to promote good relationships between

the students and faculty, to better the welfare of the school, to assist in planning student activities, to promote community service, to

promote school spirit and good citizenship, and to provide leadership for the student body. The Brentwood Middle SGA consists of

an executive board and representatives. The executive board is made up of a President, Vice-President, and Secretary from the 8th

grade. Representative elections for rising 7th and 8th graders are generally April-May. After school has been in session for at least a

month, 6th grade representatives are then voted upon. The SGA meets regularly on Monday afternoons and on some power Monday

mornings.

THEATRE

All Brentwood Middle School students are invited to audition for our fall play and spring musical. Students must be willing and able

to rehearse Monday through Friday, after school. Performances run for four nights. If students would rather work behind the scenes,

they may apply to work on our various technical crews (run crew, hair/makeup, publicity, stage management, lights, sound, and house

management). Whether actor or crew member, a BMS theatre production is an exciting and fun way for students to become involved

in their school.

The goal of the Viking Pride Club is to instill BMS Viking Pride in all students and celebrate BMS team successes. Meetings are held

after school to make signs for the school recognizing all academic and extra-curricular achievements. This group is fluid so members

are urged to come when they can and not worry about it when they can’t. People can join at any time.

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT (YIG)

Politicians needed. Would you like to sit in the seat of a State Senator? You might have the chance if you participate in Youth

Legislature. In this program, students learn about the process of presenting a bill. As members of the Senate or House of

Representatives for a day, students present bills and vote on the bills presented by other students. Forming teams in February, students

meet weekly to prepare for the conference in May.

VIDEO GAME CLUB

The video game club exists to connect students together who hold a passion for video games. This group meets at least once per month

(after school) to play video games and discuss the up and coming industry of E-sports (electronic sports). All students are welcome!

BOYS AND GIRLS ROWING The boys and girls rowing programs are for athletes

between the ages of 11 and 19 years. The goal of the

Development Program (5th to 8th graders) is to create the

foundation of comfort in a rowing shell for young athletes

while also teaching them valuable lessons about team-work,

independence, and confidence. They will row with students

from BHS as well as other middle schools from around the

greater Nashville area. The rowing motion is a great

dynamic movement that helps foster the development of

coordination, strength, and flexibility that can lead to great

competitive success at the High School level and beyond!

We also offer several weeks of Learn-to-Row Camps

throughout the summer, which can be a great step into the

world of rowing before next Fall. Visit the website

(www.nashvillerowing.org) if you have any questions!

FINAL

Williamson County School Board policy requires students to have a current athletic physical on

file in order to participate in any extracurricular activity involving athletics.

All WCS athletic physical forms are now available through the FinalForms online dashboard

( https://wcs-tn.finalforms.com/ ) enabling parents and students to complete required athletic

forms electronically. The only form families will be required to print, sign and return is the

physical form. This form is only available through the FinalForms dashboard, must be

printed, completed and signed by a physician. The form should then be submitted to the

child’s/children’s athletic director or coach in order to be eligible to participate in athletics.

WCS athletic departments will not accept paper copies of any other athletic forms or packets. All

required forms must be completed online to be eligible for tryouts and participate in athletic

programs or activities. Parents will automatically be notified when the child’s forms and physical

need to be updated.

For parents and students returning to Williamson County Schools, your student’s FinalForms

password is the same password they use to log in to their computers at school. If there is trouble

signing in, they can click “Forgot Password” below the log in. A link will be sent to the student’s

gmail account to reset it. Parents and students will have to electronically sign their forms

separate for their forms to be complete.

For parents and students new to Williamson County Schools who have not been provided access

to the FinalForms dashboard or given their gmail passwords, please contact athletic directors,

Ben Hahs or Dennis Harrison for assistance. Their contact information can be found on the

school’s Faculty & Staff and/or Athletics website pages.

Each physical is good for one calendar year. Our suggestion is to have your child’s physical

completed by a physician during the summer months. Once completed, the physical form can be

handed into the front office of Brentwood Middle School during summer hours or when school is

in session.

We thank you for your continued support of Brentwood Middle School Athletics! Go Vikings!

Sincerely,

Brentwood Middle School Athletics Administration
