Summer Reading Rising 5th Grade
All rising fifth graders should read The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman and be
ready to do some activities based on the book when school starts back. Also,
choose at least two books from the list below. If you need help choosing a great
book, Mrs. B is available all summer to help.
When you have finished reading the two books of your choice make a really cool
poster of your books so your classmates will want to read your book, too! Be sure
to include the title, author, main characters, and just enough of the story so
someone would want to read it, but not enough to spoil the ending. (You don’t
need to make a poster of The Whipping Boy.)
While most of the books listed below are considered classics, parents should
understand that not every book may be written with a Christian worldview, and
parents should choose books at their discretion. These titles may not be read in
an abridged format.

Rising 6th-8th Grades Summer Reading List
Rising 6th-8th graders may look at the book list and pick at least one of the following to make a poster or
PowerPoint. Students will present their PowerPoint or Poster in their Literature Class. They will not
present the first day of School, however they will need to ask their Literature teacher when to bring in
their projects.
Though each book has been reviewed, parents are advised to look over their child’s choice of book with
individual personality and maturity in mind. If a student has read a book before, she or he should choose
a different book!
Note: Parents please think about reading the book the same time your child reads the book, this way
you can discuss mature themes that may be found in the book. You may want to also read the book
reviews at PluggedIn.com, which is a Christian company that writes reviews for some of these books.
Each Middle Schooler must also read the required book for his or her grade. The required books are as follows:

Content and Analysis of Book
The project includes: 1. The main themes 2. The characters and settings 3. conflicts from the story 4. Students opinion of the book 20 points
The student has a misunderstanding of one of the components or the project has some inaccuracies. 15 points
The student is missing one of the main components for a proper analysis of the book. 10 points
Student is missing two or more components listed for a proper analysis of the book. 5 points
Creativity The project was very appealing. It was colorful and included many pictures. It also was different and creative. It went above the normal book report. 20 points
The project was very appealing. It was colorful and had a few pictures. It looked like the average student book report. 15 points
The project only included one or two pictures or it was not colorful. It was a little disorganized thus causing it not to be attractive. 10 points
The student did not seem to put any effort into the project and it would not catch a consumer’s eye. 5 points
Mechanics and spelling
The project has: 1. correct spelling & correct grammar 2. Correct use of difficult vocabulary 3. book titles that are underlined or italicized 20 points

Student wrote a good comparison of the book to the Bible, but it lacked organized thought and did not fully explain his/her opinion. 15 points
Student wrote a short comparison to the Bible but did not use any scriptural references (Bible verses) to back up his/her opinion. 10 points
Student wrote one or two sentences explaining how the book reflected a theme in the Bible. 5 points
Presentation! The student made eye contact, spoke loudly and clearly, had good sentence flow and pacing and displayed confidence in their knowledge and delivery. 20 points
The student’s presentation lacked in one area: made little eye contact, or spoke too softly, or lacked confidence in their book knowledge. 15 points
The student’s presentation lacked some knowledge of the book. 10 points
