Summer Reading Rising 5th Grade

All rising fifth graders should read The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman and be

ready to do some activities based on the book when school starts back. Also,

choose at least two books from the list below. If you need help choosing a great

book, Mrs. B is available all summer to help.

When you have finished reading the two books of your choice make a really cool

poster of your books so your classmates will want to read your book, too! Be sure

to include the title, author, main characters, and just enough of the story so

someone would want to read it, but not enough to spoil the ending. (You don’t

need to make a poster of The Whipping Boy.)

While most of the books listed below are considered classics, parents should

understand that not every book may be written with a Christian worldview, and

parents should choose books at their discretion. These titles may not be read in

an abridged format.

Rising 6th-8th Grades Summer Reading List

Rising 6th-8th graders may look at the book list and pick at least one of the following to make a poster or

PowerPoint. Students will present their PowerPoint or Poster in their Literature Class. They will not

present the first day of School, however they will need to ask their Literature teacher when to bring in

their projects.

Though each book has been reviewed, parents are advised to look over their child’s choice of book with

individual personality and maturity in mind. If a student has read a book before, she or he should choose

a different book!

Note: Parents please think about reading the book the same time your child reads the book, this way

you can discuss mature themes that may be found in the book. You may want to also read the book

reviews at PluggedIn.com, which is a Christian company that writes reviews for some of these books.

Each Middle Schooler must also read the required book for his or her grade. The required books are as follows:

1. Rising 6th – Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett ISBN-13: 978-0439372978 2. Rising 7th – Hatchet by Gary Paulsen ISBN-13: 978-1416936473 3. Rising 8th- The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom ISBN-13: 978-0800794057

The students will be required to take a short quiz on the required book in Literature Class upon returning to school.

Looking forward to seeing you next school year!
