    HISTORY

    In 1994 with the initiation of telecom reforms

    DoT was established to operate in all parts of

    India except Delhi and Mumbai

    In 1997 Telecom Regulatory Authority of India

    was set up

    In 1999 DoT was split up and calledDepartment of Telecom Services(DTS) which

    was corporatized and renamed as BSNL

    Broadly DoT is now responsible for policy

    making , licensing and promotion of private

    investment and BSNL, a corporate body is

    responsible for provision of services

    Later on TDSAT was set up to fairly adjudicate

    any dispute between licensor and licensee ,

    between service providers and group of

    consumers .

    PRESENT SENARIO

    Now Indian Telecom market is one of the

    fastest growing markets in the world.

    With its 787.29 million Telephone connection

    as on 31st December 2010, it is the second

    largest network in the world after China.

    It is second largest wireless network in the

    world.

    Wireless telephones are increasing at faster

    rate. The share of wireless telephones as on31stDecember 2010 is 95.54% of the total

    phones.

    Overall tele-density has reached 66.17%.urban tele-density is about 148%, whereas

    rural teledensityis at 31.22% which is also

    steadily increasing.

    Broadband connections has also i increased

    to 10.74 million on November, 2010.

    The rural teledensity is still very low

    There are less than 11 million broadband connections andabout 40% of the country does not have wireless coverage

    Evolution and expansion of emerging telecom technologies

    like NGN , LTE , Cloud computing etc. Influence to greatextent the growth of Telecom Sector

    Need of encouragement for development ofcontent/application as per the regional requirement forwider and faster penetration of Broadband.
