CULTUREFOX.IE This season at Riverbank Arts Centre, we’ve got some very exciting changes to tell you about. First of all, we are delighted with our shiny new website that has been developed with you, our patron, in mind. It is fully mobile

compatible meaning you can browse and book wherever you may be. In tandem with the new website we are launching an entirely new ticketing system which will allow for greater flexibility when booking. So if you have a

preferred seat or any other specific requirements, you’ll be able to do it all on any device. We are also giving the option to book and receive an Electronic-Ticket which can be taken directly to the auditorium door. You can of course, still call us here in the box office to book, we’d get lonely otherwise! This season we also have a number of new and returning initiatives we’d like to tell you about and are outlined below. And last, but certainly not least, we’ve our fantastic new

programme, which is positively stuffed with music, theatre, comedy, visual art, cinema and family highlights. We look forward to seeing you very soon. From Alex, Damien, Eric, Bridget and all the team.

The Year of Irish design at Riverbank Arts Centre To celebrate the Year of Irish Design 2015 Riverbank Arts Centre put together an exciting programme of visual arts events including exhibitions, workshops and talks with special focus on design, workmanship and ingenuity. It is with heavy hearts that we bid adieu to our friends in Theatre Lovett who joined us for their first

residency back in 2012, and oh what a journey it’s been since then! With the support of the Arts Council and

Kildare Library and Arts Services, we’ve sent Theatre Lovett out on the road to create theatre happenings

all over Kildare. They’ve delighted with visits to schools on the mobile library, absurd literary quizzes all

over the county, they’ve used their expertise to train actors and teachers and enthusiastic students, they’ve

made us laugh and cry and laugh again with their wonderful repertoire of theatre for young people (and their

adults!) We will try not to be sad though, as who knows what’s around the corner…see page 17.

A note from Theatre Lovett: The time has come for us to pack our bags and make room for new bridging adventures by the Riverbank’s

bridge. Here’s to the kindness of Kildare, our new friends in Newbridge, and the Riverbank’s staff for their

enduring excellence over the past two years during our residency here. Thank you to The Arts Council of

Ireland and Kildare Library and Arts Services for their kind support in making so many events possible during

our time here. But wait! There’s still time for one last hurrah, see page 17 for details.

Just as soon as we’ve waved Theatre Lovett off, there’ll be just enough time for a quick cup of tea and a tidy up

before our very special new guests arrive. Riverbank Arts Centre, with support from the Arts Council and Kildare

Library Services are delighted to announce that Moonfish Theatre are our next theatre-artists-in-residence!

Moonfish are an ensemble from Galway, who create work filled with imagination and energy for young people and adults, in not just one language, but two! (English agus

Gaeilge, in case you were wondering).

We’ve got some very special events planned, which we will be announcing over the coming months. In the meantime,

see page 20 for details of Moonfish’s wonderful adaptation of Joseph O’Connor’s Star of the Sea, which we

have with us in October.

eamon o’kane: history of play

Artist Eamon O’Kane will transform the entire gallery into an interactive installation inspired by the educational play objects devised by educator and inventor of Kindergarten Friedrich Fröbel. For the artist, parenthood sparked this interest in merging real life with his art practice, looking at the interplay of art, architecture, design and education. The installation comprises educational play materials known as Fröbel Gifts –colorful spheres, cylinders, and tubes. These “gifts” are used for unlocking creativity at an early age by teaching children about three-dimensional shapes and colours, and their relationship to the environment and nature.

Step inside our children’s gallery this autumn and find yourself transported into a series of miniature, imagined worlds. Welcome to The Box of Make Believe - an exhibition for young people and curious adults that celebrates the creativity, ingenuity and magic of set design. Before the set you see in a play ever gets built, it is first imagined on a much smaller scale, as a beautifully designed model. These miniature sets are often works of art in themselves and are the first time we get a glimpse inside the world of the play. Join us for a fascinating journey behind the scenes of how the magic of the theatre comes alive.

The Box of Make Believe has something for all ages, featuring models from family theatre such as Bake! and Monday’s Child to a range of different interpretations of Oedipus Rex by students of Sligo IT, to the model for The Abbey’s original production of Dancing at Lughnasa in 1990.

Riverbank Arts Centre is proud to bring together for the first time, this unique collection of stage design models, to celebrate the Year of Design and showcase just a small taste of the diverse talent that is currently working in set design in Ireland.

Alan Gilsenan’s Timbuktu, is a characteristically stylish and uncompromising drama, based on a screenplay by Paul Freaney. It features Eva Birthistle as a young Irishwoman, who, with the help of her precocious transvestite friend (Karl Geary), searches for her brother, (Liam O’Maonlai), a monk kidnapped by Algerian rebels in the North African Sahara.

The film acutely captures the culture clashes encountered by these strangers in a strange land with its unique rituals and superstitions. Their quest proves a life-altering experience that takes them on a parallel journey of self-discovery. Along the way, they also find themselves in life-threatening situations that are depicted through some scenes of startling violence. Gilsenan’s film pulsates with an edgy clear and present sense of danger that is heightened in PJ Dillon’s nervy, hand-held DV camerawork and Ray Harman’s ominous, atmospheric score.

To mark the end of Theatre Lovett’s residency here at Riverbank, we are delighted to hold two very special open rehearsals for schools. Students will be treated to a unique behind the scenes experience, where they will get to be a fly on the wall watching the actors as they work; rehearsing scenes, songs and movement and witness the play come together in front of their very eyes. As this is an exclusive sneak peek ‘behind the curtain’ and the play is not ready for the public yet, who knows what could happen? One thing’s for sure, this is a must for anyone who ever wondered where the magic of the theatre comes from!

Charolais ‘is an age old tale of female rivalry with a new twist: the other woman is cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Siobhan’s boyfriend is a farmer who devotes considerable attention to his prize heifer at the expense of his very pregnant girlfriend. Siobhan has developed a homicidal jealousy for this Charolais and is feeling equally murderous towards her snobbish soon-to-be mother in law.

A dark comedy of love and longing: rarely in Irish theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex expressed so frankly or with such charm.

A combination of drama and reality spanning 24 hours in the life of Nick Cave. 20,000 Days on Earth is a documentary that looks at the artistic process of the Australian musician, songwriter, author and screenwriter Nick Cave as he examines what makes us what we are and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit.

We meet the people, such as Kylie Minogue and long time collaborator Warren Ellis of The Bad Seeds and Grinderman fame, who have affected his life personally and professionally over the years.

Cave’s creative process is followed on a journey as we witness a song grow from an idea in his office, into a performance with regular collaborators the Bad Seeds at the Sydney Opera House. – Darwin International Film Festival 2014

As a founding member of the Horslips and Moving Hearts, Declan Sinnott is an Irish music veteran. He has worked with Kildare legend Christy Moore for over thirty years, regularly appearing with him on tour. Despite making music for nearly fifty years, Declan’s first solo album I Love the Noise it Makes, was recorded aged 62. Window on the World, is the Wexford man’s second album.

Vickie Keating sings all the harmonies on the album and will be accompanying Declan for what is set to be a very special night in Riverbank.

‘Al Porter Is Yours’ is the irreverent debut show from Ireland’s newest comedy star. Porter made history earlier this year by being the youngest Irish comic to headline (and sell out) Vicar Street. He did so, three nights in a row!

At only 22, Al juggles his time as co-presenter on Drivetime 2FM with Colm Hayes while performing at major festivals and venues across the country, making television appearances (Republic of Telly, The Saturday Night Show) and writing & starring in a pantomime each Christmas in The Olympia Theatre. Join award winning designer Orla Reynolds, who we have invited to give a fun filled workshop on set design, as part of The Box of Make Believe exhibition. Participants will first visit the exhibition in the Children’s Gallery to see some real model sets from theatre productions around Ireland.

Once they have been inspired by the model sets, participants will join Orla who will lead a workshop introducing the magic of set design. In this one hour workshop participants will learn the different elements of stage design and will work together to produce a model box based on a theme.

‘Live Love Laugh’ is a reflective look on an eventful life that includes a strict Catholic upbringing, two failed marriages, and coming out as a lesbian at the age of 50. Sex features quite a lot in the show, but never in a crude way. Catholic guilt is also in plentiful supply but she eventually succeeds in rising above it.

Her discovery that she was a lesbian is also tenderly handled with good humour. The end result is a warm, witty triumph that joyously celebrates being true to yourself. And you can’t ask for more than that. A huge hit at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 this is one show not to be missed!

Action Comet is a workshop during which the participants learn about the European Space Agency’s Rosetta Mission to a comet called 67/P CG. During the workshop everyone learns about this comet by both drawing it and also making a comet model for themselves. This space mission is ongoing so you can get yourself involved. Riverbank Arts Centre presents Inside Out, a new exhibition of work by ceramic sculptor Isobel Egan. Isobel has developed this series of wall mounted ceramic sculptures evoking themes of space, stillness and containment. Her aim through the sculptures is to pique the curiosity of the viewer and invite them to explore initially hidden aspects of the pieces.

Inspired by space and architecture, she works with porcelain as the intrinsic characteristics of the material, its translucence and delicate paper-like quality enables the realisation of her concepts.Isobel’s work has been described as strong, humble and extremely fragile. Her sculptural pieces join the simplicity of form to the complexity of an inner perspective or space. Official Opening, Saturday 7th November, 6pm. porcelain cities ceramic workshop

Join artist Isobel Egan for this creative and innovative workshop which will result in unique pieces of porcelain art for each participant. Following exercises to excite and inspire the imagination, children will draw, score, scratch, mark, emboss images and learn how to apply colour to the paper thin porcelain strips, resulting in beautifully colourful pictures.

Natural light will illuminate the magical translucent porcelain pictures when hung by a window. Isobel will then take the porcelain pictures away to be fired in the kiln, which will then be returned to Riverbank, for collection by the workshop participants.

Ken Ochiai’s delightfully nostalgic film is a fascinating delve into Japanese film and television history, and its focus on “jidaigeki” films, (period dramas with sword fighting). These films wouldn’t be what they were if it weren’t for the “kirareyaku” - extras who are killed, without ever being lit by the limelight.

Seizo Fukumoto stars as Kamiyama, who lives to die a beautiful, spectacular actor’s death – at Kyoto’s Uzumasa Studios. He has become a master of the art, with his own signature style of falling down dead. When the studio decides to discontinue these films he is at a loss, until hope comes in the form of young up-and-coming actress Satsuki (Chihiro Yamamoto), who wants to be trained and hopes to be Kamiyama’s pupil.

Cuckoo Connolly owns the Curious Little Clock-Shop at the bottom of Main Street. He has the very important task of keeping the Christmas Clock going, a job he has been given by Santa Clause himself. When the Christmas Stealer breaks in and puts three locks on the clock, Christmas is not going to happen. Cuckoo enlists the help of Willie the Wizard to try and get back the three keys. With Willie’s help he goes on three amazing adventures which bring him to Winnie the Witch’s House, Conor the Crazy Clown’s Circus and Padraic the Pirate’s Island.

Can he get the keys back? Can he open the locks in time? And can he save Christmas?

Cork born Flannery is one of Ireland’s foremost singer songwriters. ‘By the Rule’, Flannery’s latest record, is the work of a confident, assured songwriter, with songs that conjure a world which is by turns emotional, romantic, dark, insightful and hopeful. Written in a flat in Berlin over the course of seven months in 2013, Flannery returned to Ireland to record the songs, recruiting Phil Christie on piano and Alan Comerford to fill out the sound. The result is the sound of Mick Flannery getting comfortable in his skin.

Now in its eighth year, the collection includes items donated from consulates and embassies in Ireland and abroad alongside pieces specifically sourced for this exhibition. More than 30 countries are represented in this charming exhibition which will enchant both children and adults and provide an insight into the customs and traditions many cultures celebrate at this time of year.Commissioned by Kildare County Council, this is a very special exhibition which is not limited to a Christian tradition but also illustrates the connection between worldwide celebrations and festivals of light at this time of year.

When Mr Green comes back from holiday to find Mr White in his house it’s the start of a brrrrilliant series of adventures as Mr White covers the whole house in snow and Mr Green does everything he can to get him outside into the garden. The audience gets stuck in too with their own snow, making a snowman and joining in with a massive snowball fight. Once again, the ladies of Highly Strung bring their distinctive blend of voice, flute, violin and harp to the Riverbank Theatre for a night of Christmas classics.

The four friends have a quirky perspective on favourites from Bach to Buble and are much in demand for weddings and concerts. For many people, this magical evening has become as much a part of Christmas as fairy lights as Highly Strung presents old and new seasonal favourites, tinselled and tasselled with a twist.
