It is with heavy hearts that we bid adieu to our friends in Theatre Lovett who joined us for their first

residency back in 2012, and oh what a journey it’s been since then! With the support of the Arts Council and

Kildare Library and Arts Services, we’ve sent Theatre Lovett out on the road to create theatre happenings

all over Kildare. They’ve delighted with visits to schools on the mobile library, absurd literary quizzes all

over the county, they’ve used their expertise to train actors and teachers and enthusiastic students, they’ve

made us laugh and cry and laugh again with their wonderful repertoire of theatre for young people (and their

adults!) We will try not to be sad though, as who knows what’s around the corner…see page 17.

A note from Theatre Lovett: The time has come for us to pack our bags and make room for new bridging adventures by the Riverbank’s

bridge. Here’s to the kindness of Kildare, our new friends in Newbridge, and the Riverbank’s staff for their

enduring excellence over the past two years during our residency here. Thank you to The Arts Council of

Ireland and Kildare Library and Arts Services for their kind support in making so many events possible during

our time here. But wait! There’s still time for one last hurrah, see page 17 for details.

Just as soon as we’ve waved Theatre Lovett off, there’ll be just enough time for a quick cup of tea and a tidy up

before our very special new guests arrive. Riverbank Arts Centre, with support from the Arts Council and Kildare

Library Services are delighted to announce that Moonfish Theatre are our next theatre-artists-in-residence!

Moonfish are an ensemble from Galway, who create work filled with imagination and energy for young people and adults, in not just one language, but two! (English agus

Gaeilge, in case you were wondering).

We’ve got some very special events planned, which we will be announcing over the coming months. In the meantime,

see page 20 for details of Moonfish’s wonderful adaptation of Joseph O’Connor’s Star of the Sea, which we

have with us in October.

Welcome, Moonfish Theatre!

eamon o’kane: history of play

Artist Eamon O’Kane will transform the entire gallery into an interactive installation inspired by the educational play objects devised by educator and inventor of Kindergarten Friedrich Fröbel. For the artist, parenthood sparked this interest in merging real life with his art practice, looking at the interplay of art, architecture, design and education. The installation comprises educational play materials known as Fröbel Gifts –colorful spheres, cylinders, and tubes. These “gifts” are used for unlocking creativity at an early age by teaching children about three-dimensional shapes and colours, and their relationship to the environment and nature.

Join us for a fun-filled opening with artist Eamon O’Kane on September 5th at 3pm.

Come, stay and play!Whether you are a parent, a grandparent or someone who works with young children, we invite you to come and enjoy this space anytime over the month of September. Are you part of a parent and toddler group or Montessori school? Why not plan a visit and hang out in this wonderful play space that will fascinate and delight your little ones.

the box of make believe

Step inside our children’s gallery this autumn and find yourself transported into a series of miniature, imagined worlds. Welcome to The Box of Make Believe - an exhibition for young people and curious adults that celebrates the creativity, ingenuity and magic of set design. Before the set you see in a play ever gets built, it is first imagined on a much smaller scale, as a beautifully designed model. These miniature sets are often works of art in themselves and are the first time we get a glimpse inside the world of the play. Join us for a fascinating journey behind the scenes of how the magic of the theatre comes alive.

The Box of Make Believe has something for all ages, featuring models from family theatre such as Bake! and Monday’s Child to a range of different interpretations of Oedipus Rex by students of Sligo IT, to the model for The Abbey’s original production of Dancing at Lughnasa in 1990.

Riverbank Arts Centre is proud to bring together for the first time, this unique collection of stage design models, to celebrate the Year of Design and showcase just a small taste of the diverse talent that is currently working in set design in Ireland.

FOR SCHOOLS celebrate the Year of Design by booking a

free tour for your class. Bespoke tours are

available for both primary and secondary students. Just call the box office to

book a time.

Dir: Alberto Gilsenan | Ireland | 2004 | 94 mins | Cert: 12AStarring: Ibrahim Ahmed, Abel Jafri, Tuulou Kiki

Alan Gilsenan’s Timbuktu, is a characteristically stylish and uncompromising drama, based on a screenplay by Paul Freaney. It features Eva Birthistle as a young Irishwoman, who, with the help of her precocious transvestite friend (Karl Geary), searches for her brother, (Liam O’Maonlai), a monk kidnapped by Algerian rebels in the North African Sahara.

The film acutely captures the culture clashes encountered by these strangers in a strange land with its unique rituals and superstitions. Their quest proves a life-altering experience that takes them on a parallel journey of self-discovery. Along the way, they also find themselves in life-threatening situations that are depicted through some scenes of startling violence. Gilsenan’s film pulsates with an edgy clear and present sense of danger that is heightened in PJ Dillon’s nervy, hand-held DV camerawork and Ray Harman’s ominous, atmospheric score.

Students will be treated to a unique behind the scenes experience, where they will get to be a fly on the wall watching the actors as they work; rehearsing scenes, songs and movement and witness the play come together in front of their very eyes. As this is an exclusive sneak peek ‘behind the curtain’ and the play is not ready for the public yet, who knows what could happen? charolaisthur 17th sept

Written and performed by Noni Stapleton | Directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh | Produced by Bigger Picture Projects

Charolais ‘is an age old tale of female rivalry with a new twist: the other woman is cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Siobhan’s boyfriend is a farmer who devotes considerable attention to his prize heifer at the expense of his very pregnant girlfriend. Siobhan has developed a homicidal jealousy for this Charolais and is feeling equally murderous towards her snobbish soon-to-be mother in law.

A dark comedy of love and longing: rarely in Irish theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex expressed so frankly or with such charm.

To mark the end of a wonderful residency and to thank our audiences for their continued support, we are presenting two unique opportunities to see a staging of Theatre Lovett’s brand new show in association with

Riverbank Arts Centre before it opens at the Dublin Theatre Festival at a site specific venue.

a first for our audiences

by Louis Lovett | Directed by Muireann Ahern and Louis Lovett

‘Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again.’ -C.S. Lewis

Fear is everywhere and you must not stray from the simple path. Into this world of threat and temptation two children are born. Their names have come down to us through the ages. But who were they first? From what

reality was their legend born?

What truth was so terrible that adults began to lie?

This is The True Story of Hansel and Gretel, a deliciously dark musical fable featuring live music and an original score, this new play explores the darker colours of the rainbow in this bold retelling of a tale by the Brothers

Grimm.

‘Al Porter Is Yours’ is the irreverent debut show from Ireland’s newest comedy star. Porter made history earlier this year by being the youngest Irish comic to headline (and sell out) Vicar Street. He did so, three nights in a row!

At only 22, Al juggles his time as co-presenter on Drivetime 2FM with Colm Hayes while performing at major festivals and venues across the country, making television appearances (Republic of Telly, The Saturday Night Show) and writing & starring in a pantomime each Christmas in The Olympia Theatre. He has performed on lineups that featured Eddie Izzard, Tommy Tiernan, and Panti Bliss.

In this candid hour he pours over the details of it all in his playful style that has been described as council-estate camp.

‘Al Porter Is Yours’ bursts with the fun and colour of a young man with an enthusiastic love of life, the lights and the audience.

The Forgotten Kingdom | Dir: Andrew Mudge | Lesotho | 2013 97 mins | Cert: TBC | Starring: Zenzo Ngqobe, Nozipho Nkelemba, Lebohang Ntsane

The mountainous scenery of Lesotho provides the canvas for director Andrew Mudge’s profoundly visual story, which tells the tale of Atang: a young man obliged to make a pilgrimage from the bustle of Johannesburg to his native Lesotho upon learning that his father has passed away. There, Atang is reunited with childhood friend Dineo, with whom he discovers a romantic spark. But her disapproving father whisks Dineo away and sends Atang back to Jo’burg. Resolving to win her back, Atang enlists the help of a young orphan boy to guide him through the arresting rural terrain. At times both funny and moving, the first film ever to be produced in Lesotho is a beguiling quest steeped in the history and culture of the Basotho people.

In 1847 the famine-ship Star of the Sea sets sail for New York. Among the passengers are those with secrets to hide - a silent maidservant, a ruined landlord, and an infamous murderer... Using Moonfish’s signature bi-lingual style, the journey comes to life as six performers blend projection, physicality, live sound effects and music to conjure the worlds of the characters on a bare stage.

Based on the best-selling novel by Joseph O’Connor, and a sell-out hit of the Galway International Arts Festival 2014, this new piece of Irish theatre is unmissable.

Dubliners dilemma

sun 18th

oct

Declan Gorman’s solo show has been hailed at home and abroad as “ingenious”.

Set in 1914 it opens with London publisher Grant Richards determined to re-read ‘Dubliners’ eight years after first rejecting the manuscript out of fear it might breach obscenity laws. As the streets of Dublin and the racy, comic tales of Joyce’s childhood and young adult world spring to vivid life around him, Richards relives his frustrating correspondence with the petulant Irish writer. Should he risk everything now, second time around, and launch this volatile but brilliant genius on a world about to descend into the madness of war? “A truly mesmerising performance... by no means exclusively for die-hard Joyce fans, a brilliant introduction for newcomers!” Metro Herald

Dir: Andrew Haigh | UK | 2014 | 93 mins | Cert: TBC | Starring: Charlotte Rampling, Geraldine James, Tom Courtenay

There is just one week until Kate Mercer’s 45th wedding anniversary and the planning for the party is going well. But then a letter arrives for her husband. The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. By the time the party is upon them, five days later, there may not be a marriage left to celebrate.

Anchored by a sensational Charlotte Rampling as its lead, the movie combines director Haigh’s perceptive style with shades of Mike Leigh’s Another Year to create a quietly moving and deceptively tragic look at aging romance haunted by past mysteries.

It’s a film of small moments and tiny gestures that leaves a very, very big impression. – Time Out

It’s 1936 in Donegal. Young Michael Evans is friendly and enthusiastic, so it’s hard to understand why the locals say he doesn’t fit in. Until we learn that today is the first time he’s ever met his father. Raised by a passionate mother and several idiosyncratic aunts, Michael’s unconventional living situation gives him a unique curiosity for life.

Me, Michael explores the magic and the intelligence of an imaginative child growing up without a father in 1930s Donegal. By sharing his family story, Michael finds a new strength in dealing with prejudice.

An energetic and charming monologue full of music and dance, Me, Michael re-frames Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa with all the exuberance and insight of the original.

The Abbey Theatre presents:

Trevor Knight and Honor Heffernan are delighted to present a new show, “The Whistling Girl”, featuring musical settings of the poetry of the great Dorothy Parker, creating a darkly sardonic body of work in which the American wit and critic’s poetry is transported into the 21st century and given a sonic face-lift fusing ‘dirty’-cabaret, electronic-vaudeville, rock and jazz, combined with underscored original recordings of Parker’s voice.

Each of the songs are infused with a unique ‘voice’, creating individual tableaux or dream moments from Parker’s psyche, conjuring up images from her tempestuous life of outrageous celebrity as founding member of the notorious Algonquin set in New York, and as a civil rights activist in America and Spain during the Spanish civil War.A band of top Irish musicians including Garvan Gallagher bass, Tom Jamieson drums, Ed Deane electric guitar and Trevor Knight keyboards, will be fronted by vocalist and actress Honor Heffernan.

live love laugh

fri 23rd oct

Best known as Winnie McGoogan in the hit BBC sitcom, Mrs Brown’s Boys, Eilish comes into her own here with this wonderfully entertaining one woman show.

‘Live Love Laugh’ is a reflective look on an eventful life that includes a strict Catholic upbringing, two failed marriages, and coming out as a lesbian at the age of 50. Sex features quite a lot in the show, but never in a crude way. Catholic guilt is also in plentiful supply but she eventually succeeds in rising above it.

Her discovery that she was a lesbian is also tenderly handled with good humour. The end result is a warm, witty triumph that joyously celebrates being true to yourself. And you can’t ask for more than that. A huge hit at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 this is one show not to be missed!

Riverbank Arts Centre presents Inside Out, a new exhibition of work by ceramic sculptor Isobel Egan. Isobel has developed this series of wall mounted ceramic sculptures evoking themes of space, stillness and containment. Her aim through the sculptures is to pique the curiosity of the viewer and invite them to explore initially hidden aspects of the pieces.

Inspired by space and architecture, she works with porcelain as the intrinsic characteristics of the material, its translucence and delicate paper-like quality enables the realisation of her concepts.Isobel’s work has been described as strong, humble and extremely fragile. Her sculptural pieces join the simplicity of form to the complexity of an inner perspective or space. Official Opening, Saturday 7th November, 6pm. After having won the Palme d’Or in 2001 for his film The Son’s Room, Italian director Nanni Moretti resumes with a similar motif with his latest, Mia Madre. Except, rather than a family dealing with an unexpected absence, here we have the opposite perspective, that of the grown children dealing with the inevitable death of their ailing parent. Mia Madre is a testament to the fact that, whatever we choose to do with our lives, whoever we aspire to become, none of us loses the vulnerability of our inner child, especially when faced with our own parents’ mortality.

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one.” - C.S. Lewis

Two strangers meet for the first time. Like snowflakes, from a distance they appear the same but, look closely - they’re different, unique. Their need to transcend social/cultural differences and find ways to engage, co-operate, play, becomes for them an unexpected and creative adventure. Poetic, musical, energetic, poignant and mischievously humorous, Me Too! explores notions of ‘fitting in’; of being ‘not the same’; of ‘encountering difference’.

Barnstorm teams up again with director and deviser, Sarah Argent and the creative engine that produced the international hit The Bockety World of Henry and Bucket, to produce a gem which will resonate with all children whether from the same street or from different parts of the world. From time immemorial the Irish have been poets, story tellers and singers. Those in power write the history books while those who suffer tell the stories and write the songs and poems. In the Ottoman province of Hijaz during World War I, a young Bedouin boy experiences a greatly hastened coming of age as he embarks on a perilous desert journey to guide a British officer to his secret destination.

Shot entirely on location against the ravishing landscape of Wadi Rum and Wadi Araba, and cast with non-professional actors from one of the last of Jordan’s nomadic Bedouin tribes to settle down, Naji Abu Nowar’s understated gem is a remarkable accomplishment for a small crew working on a shoestring budget. Radiating passion from every frame, Theeb is a skilful, genre-crossing blend of a coming-of-age drama and a western.

Dir: Ken Ochiai | Japan | 2014 | 103 mins | Cert: Club | Starring: Seizo Fukumoto, Chihiro Yamamoto, Masashi Goda

Ken Ochiai’s delightfully nostalgic film is a fascinating delve into Japanese film and television history, and its focus on “jidaigeki” films, (period dramas with sword fighting). These films wouldn’t be what they were if it weren’t for the “kirareyaku” - extras who are killed, without ever being lit by the limelight.

Seizo Fukumoto stars as Kamiyama, who lives to die a beautiful, spectacular actor’s death – at Kyoto’s Uzumasa Studios. He has become a master of the art, with his own signature style of falling down dead. When the studio decides to discontinue these films he is at a loss, until hope comes in the form of young up-and-coming actress Satsuki (Chihiro Yamamoto), who wants to be trained and hopes to be Kamiyama’s pupil.

A cri de coeur on the samurai flicks of a bygone era, “Uzumasa Limelight” unfolds understatedly and movingly like something from Clint Eastwood at the top of his game. – Los Angeles Times

mick flannery

music

Cork born Flannery is one of Ireland’s foremost singer songwriters. ‘By the Rule’, Flannery’s latest record, is the work of a confident, assured songwriter, with songs that conjure a world which is by turns emotional, romantic, dark, insightful and hopeful. Written in a flat in Berlin over the course of seven months in 2013, Flannery returned to Ireland to record the songs, recruiting Phil Christie on piano and Alan Comerford to fill out the sound. The result is the sound of Mick Flannery getting comfortable in his skin.

The sound of a man at ease with his work. The sound of a master songwriter creating his best work to date…This a rare opportunity to see Mick in an intimate venue.

“Mick is a songwriter of the first order … His voice is pained, gravelly, and powerful. Recorded or live, it carries through and stops you in your tracks.” Urban Folk, New York

Dir: John Crowley | Ireland/ UK/ Canada | 2015 | 105 mins | Cert: TBC | Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Zegen

John Crowley’s Brooklyn is an adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s popular novel concerning a woman torn between rural Ireland and the titular New York borough. It tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of United States of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. A superb, emotionally turbulent account of a young Irishwoman’s attempt to become an American in the early 1950s.

A heartbreaking and poignant story about choices, country, commitments, sacrifice and love, Brooklyn is a superb, luminous and bittersweet portrayal of who we are, where we’ve come from, where we’re going and the places we call home. – The Playlist

Having played to a full house at The Keadeen Hotel last summer and over 100 sell out shows in Ireland during 2009 and 2010, Basil, Sybil and Manuel return to serve you dinner and a feast of comic delights.

Some familiar scenes, some off the cuff but all with a “Faulty” seasoning and a guarantee to keep you laughing all the way to the dessert. Basil is manic, Sybil domineering, and Manuel – of course – is hopelessly language-challenged. Everything that can go wrong, does in some beautifully controlled chaos. Just don’t mention the war!

Faulty Towers, the dining experience has been winning fans and accolades at Edinburgh, Melbourne and Adelaide Festivals for the last three years. Featuring all the best gags and a great meal, Faulty Towers: the dining experience is a loosely-scripted, pitch-perfect ‘13th episode’ of the TV series which develops the characters made famous by John Cleese, Prunella Scales and Andrew Sachs. The event includes a 4-course dinner at the four star Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge.
