We are very excited for Dr. Burns and wish him the best in this new role at the state level. Until a new principal is named at Riverview, I will serve as the Acting Principal and Cher Gardner has assumed my position of Assistant Principal of Curriculum. Ms. Gardner has served as principal of Imagine School of North Port prior to joining the Riverview administrative team this year. We are also very excited to have Brittany Shurley join our team as an administrative intern during this transition time. Ms. Shurley is a program specialist with the school district and already worked closely with Riverview so her knowledge and experience of our population of students is greatly appreciated. The school district is working on a timeline to have a new principal named this spring. The primary goal during this time is to stay focused on our students at Riverview High School! First semester is now behind us and the upcoming months will be very busy for our students. Our seniors are focused on meeting their goal of graduation. In addition, all of our students are working diligently to successfully complete their courses and prepare for IB, AP, state assessments, and industry certification exams. As we approach ‘testing season’ for all our students, we need the help of parents and students. Please take these exams seriously. These exams impact student success, course grades, and some directly impact graduation for students. The writing section of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) begins in early March. This is followed over the course of March, April, and May with many other assessments including End of Course exams in Alg 1, Geometry, Biology, American History. In addition, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) and Industry Certifications will take place later this semester. In addition to our busy season of testing, underclassmen will begin the process of choosing classes for next year. Each student will meet with his or her counselor beginning in late January to complete course registrations for next year. Parents, please be involved in this process by reviewing your student’s selections. The school counselors are available to answer any questions that arise during the process. To ensure success for our all of our students, we also encourage parents and guardians to visit the Family Access Portal (previously known as the Parent Portal or CrossPointe). The portal provides information on each student’s attendance, grades, and contact information for teachers. All students and parents/guardians should monitor these areas regularly. Finally, I am honored and thankful to work at such an amazing school. I look forward to continuing to support students, teachers, and families during this time as Acting Principal. I look forward to the continued success of our students this semester. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance. Sincerely, Kathy Wilks Acting Principal

PHilliPPi creeKBy David ShaferRiverview Students Grow Snook for Phillippi CreekWe all know that snook is a prized sportfish and an important part of Florida’s $6.1 billion saltwater fishing industry. Local scientists now know that tidal creeks, like Phillippi Creek, are an important nursery area for juvenile snook and are critical to maintaining adult snook populations. Riverview High School students are working with their marine science teacher —2013 Florida Teacher of the Year Finalist, Katrin Rudge — and Mote Marine Laboratory to help further our understanding of this important habitat-species relationship.Riverview students are raising snook in the school’s 2,300 square foot aquaculture facility to be radio tagged and released as part of an ongoing experiment lead by Mote Marine Laboratory. Scientists Dr. Nate Brennan, Dr. Ryan Schloesser and their Mote colleagues have installed solar-powered detection antennas along Phillippi Creek — some in South Gate — near seawalls without vegetation, seawalls with vegetation and natural shorelines. When tagged snook swim into the vicinity of an antenna, their presence is detected and recorded, telling scientists how much time fish spend in each habitat type.Early results suggest that natural shorelines may be superior to hardened ones for supporting snook. This is exciting news for South Gate residents living along Phillippi Creek. By restoring some of our hardened shorelines to include more vegetation, South Gators can play an essential role in replenishing more snook in Sarasota Bay. These results support ongoing efforts to restore Phillippi Creek to a more natural state. The success of Riverview High School’s Stars to Starfish program, which includes their aquaculture work, was recently recognized by Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Riverview High School students, Katrin Rudge and Mote Marine Laboratory are three more great reasons why living in South Gate is so special.Riverview Stars to Starfish has a tank adoption program – check out Riverview High School’s homepage or if you would like to donate directly to the program please contact Katrin Rudge: [email protected] learn more about what restoration partners like Riverview High School, Sarasota County, University of Florida IFAS Extension, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, Mote Marine Laboratory and the Science and Environment Council are doing to improve Phillippi Creek, and how you can get involved — visit www.phillippicreek.org.
