Family Month

Page 2: Rivulet december 2013 issue

December marks what is officially designated as Family Month in the Rotary calendar.

As we approach Christmas and the New Year we are more conscious of a focus on family and family reunions. People of most faiths celebrate on some level, and many families even take their annual holidays. So December is indeed a time to reflect on family values and how Rotary shapes those values. In Rotary we see our life priorities as family, work and then Rotary. But ideally we should not isolate Rotary from our family life. In some clubs, children are not only welcomed but are an integral part of Rotary meetings.

It is difficult for the family to be involved on a regular basis with our Rotary activities, but there are few events that do involve all of the family. We at Riviera strongly believe that. We have Christmas parties for our children. We also celebrated New Year eve together

as one big family. And Riviera does this every year. What’s interesting is that besides the club fellowships, our anns also attend our weekly meetings, especially when we have guest speakers, and are also involved in the execution of few community based events.

Beyond the immediate family is the family of Rotary. This is a large family indeed. The members include the alumni of all the programs that Rotary supports directly and indirectly. There are the major programs such as Youth Exchange, RYLA, VTT, Ambassadorial, Peace and Global Grant Scholars, and many others. Sadly we don’t keep contact with these once the program is over. It is the responsibility of Rotarians to do our best to keep them within the family of Rotary and invite them occasionally to attend our meetings or for projects etc.

Another extended family of Rotary is the Interact, Rotaract, Rotakids etc… Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera now has an extended family. We have received the charter certificate for the Interact Club of Peoples High School and will be installed in the hands of our beloved DG Rtn. Mohan Mulherkar.

Rotaract Club of Home Science College is also in the process of formation. It’s not enough that we set these clubs and forget about it. It’s important that we are in constant touch with this family of ours, give them required guidance, support and make them a part of our fellowship as well as for community events.

Before I conclude, I would like to thank the sponsors for our special events in December. RC Panaji Riviera raised Rs.3,11,208/- for our vocational centre project through a charity show of Dhoom 3. Many thanks to our title sponsor Hotel Calangute Towers for their generosity. Also wish to thank Estrela do Mar Resort, Goa for hosting the Christmas party for the inmates of National Association for the Blind and Rtn. Prasad Pawar for installing the security cameras at Pragati School, Verem.

The joy and happiness that spills forth as Rotarian involved in Community Service projects, speaks volume on why 1.2 million Rotarians are a part of this big family and are involved in making this world a better place to be!

Compliments of the seasons to my Rotary family!

Thank you!

Yours in Rotary,Rtn. Madhavi Bandekar Shetye

i) CCTV cameras installed at Pragati SchoolSafeguarding the well being of students and staff is a

primary concern for schools today. Schools facing violence or vandalism on campus find school CCTV camera an indispensable aid to identifying and resolving issues as they arise. And hence in the month of December RC Panaji Riviera installed 6 CCTV cameras at Pragati School Verem. The cameras have been placed at prominent locations in the school. Also plaque cards mentioning that “This school is under CCTV surveillance – courtesy Rotary Club Panaji Riviera” has been placed on school walls.

It’s an initiative taken by our club members, for the safety of school children… particularly girls! Not only do CCTV cameras help you maintain safety around the campus, they also discourage misbehavior.

Hoping that this project brings in a sense of responsibility amongst youth, coz they are the future of Goa. And this is just our small contribution to keep the children of Goa safe and secured.

Rtn. Prasad Pawar has sponsored this project.

Page 6: Rivulet december 2013 issue

Recently I came across a

cartoon of a Neanderthal man

sculpting away his To-Do-List

on the wall of a cave. Etched

into the wall next to three neat

square boxes one below the other were three tasks :

n Find food

n Don’t get eaten alive

n Light fire

Chances are, this Neanderthal man not only survived but

outlived his peers and perhaps never went to bed hungry! The

“To-Do List” has not evolved much since those dangerous and

perilous days in terms of its primary purpose which is the need

to remember the things you need to do, plan your day and

manage time effectively. In fact, To-do lists are just as important

and far more relevant today than ever before.

For the skeptics, I’d like to narrate a very old but popular and

oft repeated story of a steel magnate called Charles Schwab.

Schwab was a foreman who had risen through the ranks,

starting as a foreman, of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation

owned by Andrew Carnegie. One day, a management

consultant, Ivy Lee, called on Schwab, ostentatiously declaring

that he could increase the productivity of his company by over

50%. In return Schwab was to pay him whatever amount he

thought the “consultancy” or advice was worth, after evaluating

the effectiveness of the “consultancy”. Schwab, being the busy

man he was, gave him twenty minutes to put forth his idea.

Lee’s idea was simple. Every evening Schwab was to put down

in writing the six most important things he wanted to complete

the following day. Obviously, the six things had to be relevant

and significant to the objectives of the corporation. Having

written down six tasks, Schwab was to rank them from 1 to 6

in order of their importance and the following morning he was

N I L E S H A M O N K E R ’ S B L O G

to start with the first task and stay with it till it was completed

before starting the second one. After finishing the second task,

he would get cracking on the third one and so on.

At the end of the day, he would spend five minutes making a

fresh list for the next day. Unfinished tasks could be put on the

new list for the following day. On the other hand, if he was able

to complete the list, he was to start with a fresh list of six tasks

for the remainder part of the day. And this practice was to be

followed for the next ninety days and then the results were to

be evaluated!

It made such a huge difference that Schwab reportedly sent

Lee a cheque for $ 25,000. Yes, a whopping $ 25,000 for about

25 minutes of his time i.e. $ 1,000 per minute! And mind you,

this was a huge sum when it happened around a hundred years

ago!

The importance of this approach cannot be over-emphasized.

Queuing your tasks at hand is indeed the undisputed king

of an efficient approach – which is why you see it adopted

everywhere you go. Whether it’s a bank teller or a ticket counter

or a cafeteria counter, efficiency and throughput is maximized

through queuing. The dispenser on the other side of the counter

focuses completely on the task at hand i.e. the first person in

the queue. He does not pause to check how long the queue is

or what kind of people are in queue. His attention and energies

are totally focused on just one thing – to understand properly

what the requirement of that first person in the queue is and

to satisfy the requirement in the proper and quickest manner

possible. Once he’s done servicing that request, he simply

goes, “Next”!

Two things to note here : 1 - to avoid distractions and interference,

usually these counters are provided with glass partitions with

openings so small, that the dispenser is compelled to focus on

just one customer at a time and all the din and commotion is

effectively blocked out. 2 – all the paraphernalia that is required

To-do or Not-to-do is the Question

6 Dec 2013

Page 7: Rivulet december 2013 issue

7

N I L E S H A M O N K E R ’ S B L O G

to “serve” the customer is all provided within reach of the

dispenser. The dispenser wastes minimum time “hunting for”

items that are needed to service these requests. These two

things are key – insulate yourself to minimize getting distracted

and get organized so that whatever resources you need are

within easy reach.

Of course, if you list down all the tasks that you need to do, the

list could indeed be quite overwhelming and for sure you’d have

more than six items listed. But that is the very idea! Prepare a list

of all the tasks that you need to do and from within those pick

out the six most important ones – the six that will move you in

the direction of what’s most important to you. The other tasks

remain on your back-up list and sit there until you are through

with your list or till the end of the day when you prepare a fresh

list for the next day. Needless to say, you might be required to

add fresh tasks to the list during the course of the day.

A word of caution here – ask anyone who has used a list and

you’ll know that there is a great deal of satisfaction derived

from striking out tasks on a list. So, while it’s tempting to add

superfluous micro-tasks and over-filling your list to derive

that satisfaction and sense of accomplishment from striking

them out, this can actually turn out to be counter-productive.

Remember, lunch is not a task. Neither is making coffee —

unless it’s a coffee meeting!

If a task is very small – if it will take not more than a minute or

two to take care of it, it’s worthwhile doing it then and there itself

rather than adding it to your list. It would probably take as much

time to put in on your list anyways.

I suspect some people even put “Wake Up” on their To-do

list so that they can at least accomplish one thing in a day!

Remember, it’s not about the number of things you put on your

To-do list and strike them out as “completed”. It’s about how

meaningful those tasks are. Take a minute to ponder over Henry

Thoreau’s words: “It’s not enough to be busy, so are the ants.

The question is, what are we busy about?”

It’s not about efficiency, it’s about effectiveness. Because, at the

end of the day efficiency is doing things right but what’s far more

important is effectiveness - which is doing the right things!

SHOULDER PAINRecently one of my Rotarian friends asked me whether he should see a heart specialist for his shoulder pain. He learnt from a TV programme that shoulder pain might be caused by heart problem. I re-assured him that the vast majority of the shoulder pain would be due to a shoulder origin. Only a small proportion would be due to cardiac origin.

With the abovementioned experience, may I take this opportunity to answer two simple questions.

“When should you seek help from an Orthopaedic Surgeon?”

“What causes your shoulder pain?”

Orthopaedics is translated into Chinese as “Bone Specialist” In fact, this translation only relates to part of the spectrum of our practice. Orthopaedics is the medical specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of your body’s musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves that allows you to move, work and stay active. We take care of patients of all ages, from newborns with congenital foot deformity, to athletes requiring arthroscopic surgery in order to return them to high level sporting activities, to older people with arthritis needing joint replacement. Of course, we also take care of anybody with a broken bone and torn ligament.

Our job nature includes:

• Diagnosisofyourmusculoskeletalinjuryordisorder

• Treatmentwithmedication,exerciseorsurgery

• Rehabilitationbyrecommendingexercisesorphysiotherapy to restore movement, strength and

function to pre-injury stage

• Preventioninprovidinginformationtopreventinjuryor slow down disease progression (like what I am doing now)

Orthopaedic Surgeons perform numerous types of surgeries, including arthroscopy (treat problems inside a joint using small key-hole incisions and a minimally invasive approach), internal fixation (fixing broken pieces of bone using metal implants), joint replacement (when an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint) and soft tissue repair (mending of soft tissue, such as torn tendons, ligaments, nerve and blood vessels).

As for the second question, “What are the more common causes of shoulder pain?”

In fact, what most people call “the shoulder” is really several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm — from scratching your back to throwing a ball. Your shoulder is made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus),

your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle). The head of humerus fits into a rounded socket in your shoulder blade. This socket is called the glenoid. A combination of muscles and tendons keeps your arm bone centered in your shoulder socket. These tissues are called the rotator cuff. They cover the head of your upper arm bone and attach it to your shoulder blade.

The shoulder can move around freely in different planes. However, mobility has its price. It may lead to increasing problems with instability or impingement of the soft tissue or bony structures in your shoulder, resulting in pain. You may feel pain only when you move your shoulder, or all of the time. Many daily

Y O U M A Y W A N N A K N O W …

activities, such as combing your hair or getting dressed, may become difficult. The pain may be temporary or it may continue and require medical diagnosis and treatment.

Most shoulder problems fall into four major categories:

•Tendoninflammation(bursitisortendinitis)ortendontear (which will propagate with time) or adhesive capsulitis (frozen or stiff shoulder)

•Instability(dislocationorthejointgoingoutofplace)

•Fracture(brokenbonewithseverepain,swelling,andbruising around the shoulder)

•Arthritis

Other much less common causes of shoulder pain are tumours, infection, and nerve-related problems.

In the case of an injury of the shoulder causing intense pain, you should seek medical care as soon as possible. In the initial visit to the Orthopaedic Surgeon, he would try to arrive at a clinical diagnosis through careful clinical assessment. Though good medical history and physical examination could pinpoint the diagnosis quite accurately, X-rays and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are often required for the confirmation.

In terms of treatment, 80-90 percent of patients with shoulder pain will respond to simple treatment methods such as altering activities, rest, exercise, and anti-inflammatory medication. Surgery may be required to resolve some shoulder problems, if the non-surgical methods are not helpful. Certain types of shoulder problems, such as recurrent dislocations and some rotator cuff tears, may not benefit from exercise alone. In these cases, surgery may be recommended fairly early. Surgery usually can involve arthroscopy (minimally invasive) to remove scar tissue or repair torn tissues. Occasionally traditional open procedures for larger reconstructions or shoulder replacement may still be required.

Prevention is always better than cure. Having good posture while handling heavy weight (like luggage) and regular exercise to keep your fitness are the best bet to lower the chances to get a painful shoulder. Avoid repetitive movement using the shoulder in your daily activities. Never overdo.

May I wish everyone a healthy and fruitful Rotary Year “Engage Rotary Change Lives”!

The divine-cum fun trip with my family began on 11th November when we flew to Bangalore. Believe me there was huge difference in weather between Goa and Bangalore. We entered into a cool, breezy climate from a warm, humid and sultry weather. We were greeted by heavy torrential rains the moment we reached Bangalore

On 12th morning we all travelled from Bangalore to Dharmasthala enroute to Kukke Subrahmanya. Dharmasthala is about 350kms from Bangalore, towards Mangalore. It was pain staking to get up early (6-ish), get ready and move by eight to Dharmasthala. Before I talk more about the journey, let me give the readers a brief idea on the importance and history of Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala

temples. Both these temples are of prime importance in South India.

KUKKE SUBRAHMANYA

The Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is located in the beautiful Western Ghats range of Karnataka. Overlooking the temple is the famous mountain of Kumara Parvatha, a popular hiking destination for trekkers from across South India. Subrahmanya is about 105 kms from Mangalore and about 250 odd kms from Bangalore. Major Pujas performed at Kukke are a) Ashlesha Bali Puja for relief from Kaalasarpa dosha b) Sarpa Samskara / Sarpa Dosha. Sarpa Samskara / Sarpa Dosha is one of the poojas performed by devotees at this temple to get rid of the sarpa dosha (according to belief, a person, either in this birth or in any of his previous births

DHARMASTHALA

Dharmasthala is a divine temple dedicated to Lord Manjunath, who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is one of the most important Shiva temples in South India. Thousands of devotees visit this temple during the year. Dharmasthala is an Indian temple village on the banks of the Nethravathi River in the Belthangadi taluka of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. It is about 60 kms from Mangalore.

On an average the flow of pilgrims is about 10,000 people a day. Dharmasthala represents religious tolerance. One of the unique one of its kind system which still prevails in Dharmasthala is to those who come here for justice, the Heggade - an over 800 year old local lineage - dispense judgements that are said to represent the will of the deities.

To continue with my trip discussion, on 12th November, we stopped for breakfast on the outskirts of Bangalore, and had “Tatte Idli”, a huge round Idli, about 6 inches in diameter. It was one of the most amazing Idlis that I ever had, light as a feather. Wow ! ! On the way we crossed the town of Sakleshpur. The streets were filled with artifacts, tables etc made from Coffee plant roots. They were wonderful. At around 12 noon we reached Kukke Subrahmanya.

As is the traditions, before entering into the temple, we have to wash our hands, feet in the river Kumardhara which flows besides the temple. But

Anay believed that simple washing of hands and feet will not purify him, so he jumped in the river and started swimming. There were a lot of fish, thousands of them who come the banks of the river, at the top, to eat stuff like rice puffs etc thrown by pilgrims. This is one more tradition followed at Kukke. This was really amazing sight, seeing so many fishes unharmed and untouched by human beings.

Anay had to be literally pulled out of water, and then we all proceeded to the temple for Darshan. It was really serene and something magical inside the temple. All of us felt a certain calm after our Darshan at Kukke. We then went for afternoon Prasad, in the temple premises. The Prasad had hot steaming rice with Sambar, Rasam and Curds. All the dishes were cooked in typical Mangalore style with lots of coconut. At times simple grub like this also feels more satisfying in temple complexes, than a sumptuous buffet in 5 star hotels.

After our lunch we proceeded to Dharmasthala which is about 65 kms from Kukke. It was late evening by the time we reached Dharmasthala. We checked into a Guest House of the temple which our uncle had booked for us. The guest house was wonderful, nice and clean. Only menace here was hundreds of monkeys. These monkeys are well trained not to be threatened by humans. So you had to careful if you are carrying any food item, Prasad etc, because these monkeys walk up to you, fearlessly and demand for the food. If you do not give, they literally snatch the food from your hands.

MONSTERSAT NIGHT

Rhitma Mukherjee - 9 years

Papa and Mama decided to take usOn a vacation.

I was full of excitement and funAnd I woke up before the big bright sun.

We reached the beach where I wanted to goI saw many people who I did not know.

I ran to a tree beside the seaBut then I saw some looking at me.

They stepped forward and I stepped behindI planned to run but I suddenly changed m mind.

We played a lot and they told me thatThey will be dangerous at night.

We had a lot of funBut down went the sun.

I held my dress tight, because I was in fright.Their face started changing and they looked a bit funny

Their saliva was dripping like green honeyI knew what was in store,

But the reason is, I wanted to play moreI started teasing them and planned to run,

As fast as a super bullet gun.I told my legs, “Hurry up,

Before they eat you and me up.”I ran and ran on the wet sand,

But all they did was stare and stand. Finally I saw the sun come up and realised...

That they were freezing andTheir poor souls were releasing.

‘Oh God!’ I pray, ‘Bless the souls with your light,So that they are no longer Monsters At Night!’

On 12th evening, we went to the temple for the evening Aarti, followed by the Maha-Prasad at the dining hall. After our Mahaprasad, we went for our cultural programme known as Yakshagana, in the temple premises. Yakshagana is nothing but a dance form depicting stories from Hindu mythology, We saw Ramayana being performed, and it was really entertaining.

Next day morning .i.e. on the 13th we went at around 9 am to the temple for our annual Abhishekam pooja, which we do before Lord Manjunath Swamy. Gents were dressed in Silk Dhotis and

ladies in Silk sarees. The Abhishekham was completed in the most religious and pious manner before Lord Manjunath Swamy. By the time we were out of the temple it was around 11am. We then immediately packed and left back for Bangalore.

As is the tradition, we stop at Sakleshpur at around 02pm for a heavy Non-Veg meal (after several veg-meals in the temples), so we had no more time at our disposal. The non-veg food at Sakleshpur is amazing; Chicken in Earthen pot with Bhakris is heavenly. After having a heavy lunch, we headed back to Bangalore and were back by 7 in the evening.

All in all it was a fun, religious, foody trip, which we do every year. This trip gives us a truly spiritual, peaceful experience, which we would never miss for anything in the world.

This recipe is from Rayalseema Ruchulu - one of the famous Andhra cuisine restaurant at Jubilee Hills. You can prepare this dish in a total of 30 mins cooking time, chopping included. Highly recommended for everyone who loves South Indian flavours.

METHOD1. Marinate 1/2 kg chicken with 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 1/2 tsp

turmeric, salt and 1 tsp chilli powder for atleast an hour before cooking. I added 2 tsp curd to the marinade though this was not part of the recipe.

2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. When hot, add 1 sprig of curry leaves and fry them till they are crisp. Now add 2 medium onions finely chopped and fry them till they are brown in color.

3. Add marinated chicken pieces and fry until chicken looses its pink colour. Add 1 tsp garam masala powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder and fry the same. You can give the chilli powder a miss if you dont like your gravy too spicy.

4. Add 1 cup water and bring to boil. Cook the chicken pieces for another 15 mins on slow flame with lid covered or till its cooked. Keep stirring all the while. Adjust the water according to the consistency you want.

5. Adjust the salt if needed. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

ARiES March 21 - April 20

you and one of your partners or competitors are disagreeing quite a bit this month. sometimes, it is your home life, parents,

or private life that the two of you are arguing about and other times it is your career, boss, or public reputation. there are times when the two of you can work things out with the help of friends or you could simply put your differences aside when it comes to teamwork, socializing, and group activities.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

something involving politics, religion, cultures, academia, laws, travel, tourism, and/or relocating to a new city has been

causing problems for you. you try to make a fresh start in this area of your life but your career, emotional well-being, and local community involvement are all negatively affected by it. later in the month, you get an opportunity to launch a professional goal or you begin a new project that is beneficial to your public reputation and standing in the community.

GEmini May 22 - June 21

you have a great deal of activity happening in the areas of your chart that govern your ability to trust, share, and fully

participate in financial and romantic relationships. most of it is good, but you are torn over what is the best way to acquire wealth and you have some really tough issues involving friends, teammates, colleagues, and/or the internet when it comes to financial or romantic elements of your life. this is not really a new topic for you. unfortunately, you have been dealing with variations of this issue for a couple of years now. you have learned a lot about who you can and cannot trust. now you have to work on what to do when you recognize these problems resurfacing; how do you implement your new knowledge?

CAnCER June 22 - July 22

you and a partner or rival are in a huge battle. at times, you both try to work things out, but there is simply a huge difference of opinion about something. sometimes, your

private life, roommates, or parents are dragged into the arguments and at other times, it is your boss, reputation, or professional goals that are adding to the negativity between the two of you. and yet you still have a chance to launch a fresh start between the two of you and then later you have a chance to launch a romantic or financial relationship. perhaps these new beginnings are with one partner or rival and the disagreements are with a different one. it is hard to say, but your romantic, financial, professional, and/or social partnerships are causing you a lot of concern, but silver linings can be found.

LEo July 23 - August 23

now that the holidays are over, it appears that things are a mess at work. you are constantly dealing with all kinds of

dramas and issues in the work place. it is not so much that you are not able to make progress towards climbing up some ladder of success, but that the day-to-day tasks and duties are filled with little challenges. you are also likely to find that coworkers are easily frustrated and bickering. Despite all of the little headaches at work, you are able to get a lot accomplished at home or from home and you and a partner are able to launch some kind of a fresh start or new beginning together.

ViRGo August 24 - September 22

you are mostly interested in having fun, following your heart, spending time with loved ones, and maybe losing yourself in some creative activities. but your finances keep clashing with your plans. then when you think you might have found a

way to pay for the playtime activities, your friends, teammates, committee memberships, and/or internet issues begin trying to demand your attention so that you are not able to fully focus on what it is that you are trying to do. you do find little moments here and there where you get to do exactly what it is that you want to do, so don’t give up.

LibRA September 23 - October 23

you are feeling passionate and ready to have some fun in life, but a partner or a rival is upset and complaining about both your public life and your private life. it is also possible

that your parents are arguing and your partner is stuck in the middle of the mess. or it could play out as a tug of war between your home and career that leaves your partner having to deal with the fallout. either way, they are only upset with you for a short time, but they are still upset and causing stress throughout most of the month.

SCoRPio October 24 - November 22

so many of the people you know will be arguing like a bunch of know-it-alls this month. they are arguing about religion, politics, cultures, laws, academia, mass media, and travel.

you and your coworkers are in the middle of all of this drama and having a tough time getting work done. you may decide that telecommuting from home is easier than dealing with the dramas happening in the office.

SAGiTTARiUS November 23 - December 21

both of your financial sectors are entering into a battle with each other. Finances are going to be an area of concern for

the next few months. that does not mean that you won’t make any money, only that financial matters will cause stress. but yes, you could have trouble keeping to a budget too. unfortunately, it is your playtime activities that are going to feel the brunt of this dynamic. you should probably just plan on finding inexpensive hobbies for the next few months.

CAPRiCoRn December 22 - January 20

you and a partner or rival are butting heads. you are being a stubborn know-it-all and they are exaggerating and blowing

things out of proportion. you have pretty much zero tolerance for their dramatizations. to make matters worse, the two of you are arguing about something or someone in your private life. your home life is chaotic, rebellious, argumentative, and/or just a scattered mess with no sense of cohesion. try not to say or do anything you will regret later.

AqUARiUS January 21 - February 18

traveling, academics, religion, politics, cultural beliefs, and mass media are all topics creating a great deal of stress in

your life at this time. it could be that people are just arguing a lot about these topics, but it could also be that you are up to your eyeballs in real dramas concerning these aspects of your life. at times, the stress and challenges are also affecting your ability to remain productive at work.

PiSCES February 19 - March 20

you are in a very social mood and you are getting along really well with friends, teammates, colleagues, and those

that you like to connect to via the internet. you do need to be very careful when it comes to financial dealings involving these people. things are going to end up costing you way more than what they should. i am not saying that these people are deliberately cheating you financially, but it is a possibility. it is also just as likely that misunderstandings, poor budgeting, internet scams, etc. could be the culprit. just hang out for fun, but keep your credit cards at home.

Most of us are familiar with the general saying that a stranger is the friend you have not met. In Rotary, the development of acquaintance, through an opportunity of service, goes beyond ordinary friendship. Such is the powerful spirit of Rotary that this friendship evolves and culminates into what we call as Rotary Family.

Clubs extend its support to the members who are experiencing problems, respond to families in bereavement, follow up on members who stop attending meetings, and make new members feel part of the family. And to emphasize the importance of personal relationships, the RI Board in 2003 designated December as Family Month.

When we say Family, Rotarian should also know the importance of giving priority to “Rotarians Family” over the “Family of Rotary”. The members of our club truly understand that. I am of a belief that a person can only be a true Rotarian when

he enjoys his own family support and this support is only possible when he involves his family into Rotary activities. And that is the reason our Club enjoys the support from our Anns and Annettes.

Having close to 30% lady Rotarians has also helped our Club to ensure active participation from the Anns. I will appeal to all the Clubs to induct more lady Rotarians in your respective Clubs to enhance the participation of the Anns in Club activities and also to make the Rotary family, a true family. It is only with the family support and working with them together that we can think to do extraordinary things to improve communities around us.

As we are shortly going to witness the end of 2013, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the All Mighty for having given me such good friends through Rotary whom I do consider a part of my family and would like to also thank all my Rotary family members, readers and well wishers for all their support in making the Rivulet what it is.

At this half yearly juncture of the Rotary year I appeal to all the readers to continue their support and mail their articles, jokes, recipes, poems, etc to me at [email protected]

Wish you all a very Happy n Prosperous New Year 2014…….
