FarDlers Warned Of Electrical Dangers

Most farmers are well aware of the ufety risks present on their fanns. However, one danger frequently over· looked is electrical hazards. Any farm machinery powered by electricity presents a danger of electrocution, and overhead power lines offer a threat as well.

Ken Carvt:r, assistant manager of the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No . I , 1isted somt: common situations on the farm which present the possibilily of electrical shock.

" One electrical hazard many people may not think of is associated with center pivots. Usually improper main· te~ance leads to wires shorting out. 11l1s causes the pivot to be 'hot ' , sending 440 volts of electric current down the pivot. " Carver continues. " Just touching the pivot in this condition is lethal. " Carver adds that the electrical panel box on center pivots can be another danger if the box is not grounded properly. In this case the box may be " hot" even if it is not turned on.

" Electric pumps are another place where trouble might occur on the farm. The control box presents the same opportunity for a problem as with the center pivot control box ."

The causes of these problems may come from any 'number of sources. Th e co ntrol boxes may not be

grounded properly. cattle can disturb the wires. or wires can weather and fray. exposing bar.e wire which can shon against another surface. Carver notes.

" Probably .he hazard most common' Iy heard of is picking up aluminum pipe and bumping into highline wires. Several people every year across the United States are electrocuted for this reason." Carver says.

He explains that confrontation with a high line wire often occurs when the pipes are be ing moved, or the farmer is .rying '0 dislodge rabbits and other small animals . which like. to hide in the pipe.

A few preca uti ons can greatly reduce the risks posed by electricity on the farm. Carver advises , " The easiest and s implest wa y to check for electrical hazards is to get a little tester and test the electrical panel box before you touch it to see if volts are running thro ugh it. If you get a reading . then there is a direct current and yo u 've got a problem." Carver also recommends looking for loose and exposed wires and making sure that electrical equipment is properly in· stalled and grounded.

" The main ca ution would be when a problem is noticed , get away from it and gel qualified professional help to fi x it. " Carver says.
