Almighty that nothing untoward has happened to you,despite the great distance that separates us. Dont resentour failure to write you in the last mail. Even though wedont write you, we dont forget you a singe moment,especially in our prayers to the Lord and the Virgin. The

children also are always talking about you during theirplay. I often hear the three E., A., and Antonio, (1)discussing you. And when they hear your namementioned in our conversations, they at once ask if youare coming home and where you are. Icang is good,because she can say that you are at Barcelona; E. saysColombo, and Antonia, Paa;(2) and so the three oftenhave an argument; they cannot agree about you.

Mara, Pangoy, and Trining say that they willnot write you for the present because they

have nothing more to tell you, as we haveexhausted all the news. As you already know,here we lack news, so that our letters to youare devoid of news except family ones.However, the plague, that is said to be in

Manila, has not yet reached our town, thankGod. No one has yet died among our friends. T.Luis has a difficult ailment; he has gone toManila for treatment but he has not

improved. Icang has not yet become stoutsince you left; Chabeng is like a melon.

by here Monday morning when you weregoing down to Manila and as I was sleepingyou did not see me any more. And then Mamasays that you are carrying little money, sothat Im always thinking of how you are

getting along. For this reason, I want to sendyou a diamond ring and write me to whom Ishould send it, so that it may reach you there.We are well, thank God; I have no ailment ofany kind; what I dont know is whether I shall

get over the difficulties ahead.

With regard to the town fiesta, what I can tellyou is that Sra. Julia with the whole family

and others from Sta. Cruz stayed here a longtime -- two weeks. Aunt Betang did not comebecause she had guests she could not leavebehind. Ill write you longer later because thebearer is in a hurry.

Segunda Katigbak (Filipino)

Segunda Katigbak was his firstlove at sixteen.

Rizal's delightful account of"what happened between April

and December, 1877", throws somuch light upon his boyish heart.

He would later write a story ofhis first love three years later.

Unfortunately, after just a fewmonths, Segunda Katigbak wasengaged to be married to atownmate - Don Manuel Luz.

Leonor Valenzuela (Filipino)

In his sophomore year at theUniversity of Santo Thomas healso caught the eye of LeonorValenzuela of Pagsanjan,

Laguna. Rizal would send her love notes

written in invisible ink, thatcould only be deciphered overthe warmth of the lamp or

candle. He visited her on the eve of his

departure to Spain and badeher a last goodbye.

Leonor Rivera (Filipino)

Leonor Rivera, his sweetheart for 11years played the greatest influence inkeeping him from falling in love withother women during his travel.

Unfortunately, Leonor's motherdisapproved of her daughter'srelationship with Rizal, who was then aknown filibustero. She hid from Leonorall letters sent to her sweetheart.

Leonor believing that Rizal had already

forgotten her, sadly consented to marrythe Englishman Henry Kipping, hermother's choice.

Consuelo Ortiga (Spanish)

Consuelo Ortiga y Rey, the prettierof Don Pablo Ortiga's daughters, fellin love with him.

He dedicated to herA la Senorita

C.O. y R., which became one of hisbest poems. He suddenly backed out before the

relationship turned into a seriousromance, because he wanted toremain loyal to Leonor Rivera and

he did not want to destroy hiSfriendship with Eduardo de Letewho was madly in love withConsuelo.

O Sei San (Japanese)

O Sei San, a Japanese samurai'sdaughter taught Rizal the Japaneseart of painting known as su-mie.

She also helped Rizal improve his

knowledge of Japanese language. If Rizal was a man without a

patriotic mission, he would havemarried this lovely and intelligentwoman and lived a stable andhappy life with her in Japan

because Spanish legation thereoffered him a lucrative job.

Gertrude Beckett (British)

While Rizal was in Londonannotating the Sucesos de lasIslas Filipinas, he boarded in thehouse of the Beckett family.

Gertrude, a blue-eyed and buxomgirl was the oldest of the threeBeckett daughters. She fell inlove with Rizal. Tottie helpedhim in his painting andsculpture.

But Rizal suddenly left Londonfor Paris to avoid Gertrude, whowas seriously in love with him.

Nellie Boustead (French)

Rizal having lost Leonor Rivera,entertained the thought of courtingother ladies. While a guest of theBoustead family at their residence

in the resort city of Biarritz, hehad befriended the two prettydaughters of his host, EduardoBoustead.

Their love affair unfortunately did

not end in marriage. The lovers, however, parted as goodfriends when Rizal left Europe.

Suzanne Jacoby (Belgian)

In 1890, Rizal moved to Brusselsbecause of the high cost of living inParis. In Brussels, he lived in theboarding house of the two Jacobysisters.

In time, they fell deeply in love witheach other. Suzanne cried when Rizalleft Brussels and wrote him when hewas in Madrid.

There is a debate on whether Rizal had

a relation with Suzanne Jacoby (shewas much older than Rizal) or withher niece, the 18-year-old SuzanneThill)

Josephine Bracken (Irish)

In the last days of February 1895,while still in Dapitan, Rizal metan 18-year old petite Irish girl,with bold blue eyes, brown hair

and a happy disposition. Rizal was physically attracted to

her. His loneliness and boredommust have taken the measure ofhim and what could be a better

diversion that to fall in loveagain.

Rizal asked Josephine to marryhim, but she was not yet ready tomake a decision due to herresponsibility to the blind Taufer.

Rizal upon the advice of his familyand friends and with Josephine'sconsent took her as his wife evenwithout the Church blessings.

result of some incidence, whichmight have shocked or frightenedher.
