1908 The Battle of Ballots has been fought the victory won and so overwhelmingly in favor of Taft and what he represents that there is uo room for a squabble over doubtful states as was the case in the HaysTilden campaign of i876 In the defeat of Win Jennings Brvan there is no ground far ex- ultation ¬ anywheie He stands for the noblest type of American citizenship It does not follow that because he has been defeated any principle of popular gqven ment has suffered defeat On the contrary the main principle the underlying principle of a gpvern ment of tht people bv the people for the people ofwhich he is a staunch exponent was tever more clearly set forth than in the pres ¬ ent campaign Nor is Mr Bran anymore the exponent of tht principle than Theodore Roosevelt Whether the presidentelect Will lam Howard Taft shall be strongel than the leaders in the national assembly opposed to the reforms proposed and set in motion by his predecessor remains to be seen Whether or not Wm H Taft can cause a revision of the tariff as he has promised also remains to be put to the test It would be preposterous to sup- pose that any adjustment of the tariff tup or down will meet the approval of the extremists on eithei side nor that will exactly suit both factions in either side nor that will reconcile nor that will exactly suit both factions in either party There will be difference of opinion on this question as on every other topic in our national politics and the honest convictions of the leaders in politics usually formulate these differences and make them principal elements in national politic arid party plat forms Around these planks as t icy are called with the leaders standing on them are waged the political battles fierce and strong and any arguement that has any semblance of truth and some that have none are injected into the speeches and campaign litetature for all they are worth So the result is in almost every election we have a campaign of education that reaches the humblest and leist informed voter in the country in some measure while the people who can read and think for them ¬ selves may choose as between the policies of the various parties now representedThe remarkable part of the campaign just closed is the fact of such similarity in the policy out ¬ lined in the national platform of the two great parties respectively Toomuch space would be required to give in detail the agreement or differences of the two platforms only in a general way to affirm that practically the Democratic platform and Mr Bryan in his speeahes pledged the good faith of the Democratic party to carry out the most im ¬ portant oi the reforms begun by the Republican party under McKinleys and Roosevelts administration Whether or not the laws pertaining to interstate commerce are just and wise remains to be seen Whether the combination of capital called Trust is an unmixed evil has not been proven It is not denied it cannot be successfully denied that the corporations have enabled the public to secure better articles and cheaper according to quality than was possible jn the good old times It cannot be denied that under the Protective system the United States has become the leading nation in agriculture manufactures and commerce and a world power look ¬ ed up to and respected bv every nation on the globe It does not follow however that the same result might pot have been attained in some other way under democratic rule The pi ogress of the United States since their independence and consolidation into a Federal government has been onward and upward and if you please the greatest expansion as a result of war occurred under democratic administration and next to the Louisiana burchas a peaceable transaction the greatest expansive movement itshistory In closing this subject it may be said t1atnot ¬ withstanding the defeat of Mr Bryan there was no defeat to what ¬ ever principle he edvocated that was vital to interests of American citizenship Since his first campaign great changes have arisen in American politics amounting to a revolution in which the masses led chiefly by President Roosevelt are arrayed against the monopolistic tendencies of various combinations of capital designated by him as predatory wealth or the combination of c ipital in restriction of trade The department of commerce and labor has been created and with it the great question regulating inter ¬ state commerce A question practically new in our history no wonder then that men differ in de ¬ gree and manner of meeting these great questions affecting the inter ests of every citizen ot the nation Aside from home half truths circu ¬ fated for the purpose of defeating 61 insuring the election of either the campaign was remarkably free from personal abuse and vituper- ation ¬ headed as each ticket was by grand men honest men either ofwhich would make an honorable respectable president of the great est and grandest that because he has been defeatedany principle of popular gqvenment has suffered defeat On thecontrary the main principle theunderlying principle of a gpvernment of tht people bv the peoplefor the people ofwhich he is a

staunch exponent was tever moreclearly set forth than in the pres ¬

ent campaign Nor is Mr Brananymore the exponent of thtprinciple than Theodore RooseveltWhether the presidentelect Willlam Howard Taft shall be strongelthan the leaders in the nationalassembly opposed to the reformsproposed and set in motion by hispredecessor remains to be seenWhether or not Wm H Taft cancause a revision of the tariff as hehas promised also remains to beput to the test

It would be preposterous to sup-

pose that any adjustment of thetariff tup or down will meet theapproval of the extremists on eitheiside nor that will exactly suit bothfactions in either side nor thatwill reconcile nor that will

exactly suit both factions in eitherparty There will be difference ofopinion on this question as onevery other topic in our nationalpolitics and the honest convictionsof the leaders in politics usuallyformulate these differences andmake them principal elements innational politic arid party platforms Around these planks as

t icy are called with the leadersstanding on them are waged thepolitical battles fierce and strongand any arguement that has anysemblance of truth and some thathave none are injected into thespeeches and campaign litetaturefor all they are worth So theresult is in almost every electionwe have a campaign of educationthat reaches the humblest andleist informed voter in the countryin some measure while the peoplewho can read and think for them ¬

selves may choose as between thepolicies of the various parties now

representedTheremarkable part of the

campaign just closed is the fact ofsuch similarity in the policy out ¬

lined in the national platform ofthe two great parties respectivelyToomuch space would be requiredto give in detail the agreement ordifferences of the two platformsonly in a general wayto affirm that practicallythe Democratic platform andMr Bryan in his speeahes pledgedthe good faith of the Democraticparty to carry out the most im ¬

portant oi the reforms begun by theRepublican party under McKinleysand Roosevelts administrationWhether or not the laws pertainingto interstate commerce are justand wise remains to be seenWhether the combination of capitalcalled Trust is an unmixed evilhas not been proven It is notdenied it cannot be successfullydenied that the corporations haveenabled the public to secure betterarticles and cheaper according toquality than was possible jn thegood old times It cannot bedenied that under the Protectivesystem the United States hasbecome the leading nation inagriculture manufactures andcommerce and a world power look ¬

ed up to and respected bv everynation on the globe It does notfollow however that the same resultmight pot have been attained insome other way under democraticrule The pi ogress of the UnitedStates since their independenceand consolidation into a Federalgovernment has been onward andupward and if you please thegreatest expansion as a result of

war occurred under democraticadministration and next to theLouisiana burchas a peaceabletransaction the greatest expansivemovement itshistory In closingthis subject it may be said t1atnot ¬

withstanding the defeat of MrBryan there was no defeat to what ¬

ever principle he edvocated thatwas vital to interests of Americancitizenship

Since his first campaign greatchanges have arisen in Americanpolitics amounting to a revolutionin which the masses led chiefly byPresident Roosevelt are arrayedagainst the monopolistic tendenciesof various combinations of capitaldesignated by him as predatorywealth or the combination ofc ipital in restriction of trade Thedepartment of commerce and laborhas been created and with it thegreat question regulating inter ¬

state commerce A questionpractically new in our history nowonder then that men differ in de ¬
