nodeværdier (ottendedele i stedet for # erdedele, # erdedele
i stedet for halvnoder).
Kantatens mellemspil går direkte over i sangen; udgaven be-

Commentary to the editionThe edition is based on source A. A second part hinted at in the
voice stave has been omitted. A few notational errors which are
perhaps due to the copyist who evidently was not used to copy-
ing music, have been emended tacitly, for example wrong note
values (quavers instead of crotchets, crotchets instead of min-
ims). Other notational errors which are described in the notes
below have been corrected without typographical indication.
The interlude of the cantata segues directly into the song; the
edition begins 1 bar before the voice part sets in (with a bar
which is also used as an interlude between stanzas 1 and 2).

A. Sangstemmen er identisk i A og B (bortset fra trykfejl);
nuskripter til de to versioner kendes ikke. Varianter frem-

Commentary to the editionThe edition is based on the printed version in source A
which di* ers from the Danish version (B) printed fi ve years
earlier in a few instances as regards the piano part. The edi-
tion also adheres to the revision of the piano part in 2 bars
which RL has inserted in ink in A. The voice part is identical
in A and B (except for misprints); thus, both contains the al-
ternate ‘high’ version in bb. 18-19 and bb. 42-43. The Dan-
ish distribution of the text follows B. Printer’s manuscripts
for the two versions are not known. Variants are reviewed in
the notes below. Misprints in A, which have been emended
using B as a source, are presented without typographical in-
dication in the present edition.

RL’s corrections are undated, but the handwriting suggests

noder, pedalbrug og tempo. Ved komponistnavnet på s. 3
anfører RL: komp. Marts 1908. 14 Aar.
Noterne

namik. En vis redaktionel komplettering (med anvendelse af
skarpe parenteser) har dog fundet sted.

two last pages are blank).
Paper type: 12 staves without manufacturer’s name (the pa-
per has 4 × 3 staves designed for the notation of solo voice
with accompaniment).
Commentary to the editionThe edition is based on source A. An alteration made in
ink in b. 52 in pno lh has been followed. Irregular notation
of repeated bars have been retained as in the source, even
though they may seem arbitrary. Thus, the voice part con-
tains di* erences between the four stanzas regarding note
values and dynamic markings; the repetitions of the piano
part are notated di* erently each time regarding articulation
and dynamics. However, a certain editorial completion has
taken place (marked by square brackets).

udgivet (24), kendes i dag.
kilde A. Kildens mange arbitrære varianter i passager, der

Paper type: Beethoven Papier Nr. 35 (20 Linien). The inscription Variazione II and the addition voce melodia con mano destra! (at the top of p. 1) are additions made by RL
around 1949 when he incorporated a piano version of the

Commentary to the editionOriginally, there were six songs by Stuckenberg (BVN 93), of
which only the present no. 1, and no. 5 which was published
(24), are known today. The missing composer’s signature
together with the heading (1.) bears witness to the fact that
source A is a fragment of a larger manuscript. The edition is
based on source A. The many arbitrary variants within re-
peated passages, including slurs, distribution of voices in the
piano part, articulation etc., have been retained.

ant; blyantsrettelser fi ndes desuden i klaversatsen i sang 3,
t. 35, 37-41 og 43-44. Det er beskedne rettelser, som ser ud
til at være fra 1940rne. Herudover er enkelte, manglende
fortegn tilføjet med blyant. Begge de to sider, som rummer
sang 4 er overstreget diagonalt med farvestift. Oprindeligt
omslag med titel mangler; overskriften over første nodeside

In song 1 the voice part has been altered slightly in b. 3 in
pencil; pencil corrections can also be found in the piano part
in song 3, bb. 35, 37-41 and 43-44. It is minor corrections
apparently made in the 1940s. Moreover a few missing ac-
cidentals have been added in pencil. Both pages, containing
song no. 4 have been struck out diagonally with a crayon.
The original cover with the title is missing; the heading of
the fi rst page of music was added by RL with a ballpoint pen,
i.e. in 1950 or later.

De to sange præsenteres
mer enkelte samtidige rettelser, som respekteres i udgaven;
respekteres ligeledes. Ingen oprindelig titel på samlingen er
bevaret; Fire Sange er en redaktionel konstruktion.

reworking in 1937-39 for baritone and orchestra under the
title Evening Bells (BVN 235); in this connection the manu-
script was given the title Lucifer / Sancta Michele (Venice) and
the title As the Bells of Our Lady Toll their Low, Muf* ed Chime.
Song 2 was similarly provided with alterations of notes, indi-
cations of instrumentation and corrections in the sung text,
but an orchestrated version of this song is not known. Songs
3-4 appear in the original fair copy, without later alterations.
Commentary to the editionThe edition is based on source A. Additions and corrections
in pencil in song 1 and 2 are ignored as they pertain to a revi-
sion in preparation for an orchestration of the songs. Thus
the two songs are presented with the original fair copy in ink,
which is wholly legible, as a source. The fair copy in ink of
all four songs contain a few contemporary corrections which
are respected in this edition; two obviously missing acciden-
tals which have been inserted in pencil are also included. No
original title of the collection has been preserved; Four Songs is an editorial construction.

Undated.

Source description: see under 39 above, source B.
Commentary to the editionA complete manuscript is not available. The edition is pieced
together from the sources A, B and C. The piano part bb. 1-12
(with repetitions bb. 13-24 and 25-36) is based on source A,
the piano part bb. 37-39 is based on source B, and the sing-
ing voice adheres to source C. The latter no doubt contains a
loyal reproduction of the voice part in RL’s fair copy which is
now lost. The diverging notation and varied markings of dy-
namics, tempo and articulation in the three stanzas show that
RL’s fair copy was not notated as a strophic song but written
out in its full length. Source C has therefore been decisive

Song 2 with autograph addition in pencil: Church of Our Lady 18th May 1916. Emilie Ulrich and I.The Christmas Bells was originally named The Church Bells and On Earth there’s Ringing was originally named On the Way to Church. The Christmas Bells (song 2) is characterised
by numerous corrections. The earliest of these seems to have
been carried out during the writing of the fair copy and thus
before the performance in 1916; these corrections include
the cancellation of 17 instrumental bars together with small-
er changes in the piano part. To this is added a more sketch-
like revision in ink and pencil made at a far later date (1940?
and later?) and which primarily concerns the voice part from
b. 38 onwards and to a lesser degree the piano part.

sangen fremstår i i dag.
RL udfærdigede i 1940 = 45.
kildemæssig betydning for udgaven.

Commentary to the editionThe edition is based on source A and respects RL’s correc-
tions there. These include partly a few pencil corrections in
songs 1 and 4 which judging from the handwriting stems
from about 1940, and partly extensive alterations in song 2.
The edition of the latter presents the revised and abbreviated
form in which the song appears today. Some of the late cor-
rections, especially in the voice part, are incorporated in the
revised version which RL carried out in 1940 = 45. Yet the
manuscript does not seem to have served as a draft during
the preparation of the new version which contain numerous
further alterations. The new version has been consulted in
connection with the verifi cation of certain unclear correc-
tions in source A. Source B is of no critical signifi cance for
this edition.

that RL wants the note g here instead
of the original g which can be found in

is put in brackets by RL and is possibly
meant as an alternative end note
