TAFE End of Year Exhibition
RMIT Diploma of Photo Imaging
The 2013 RMIT Diploma in Photo Imaging Graduate Exhibition celebrates the passion and creative endeavours of the students. Held at Brightspace Gallery in St Kilda, the exhibition highlights work from diverse fields including fashion, photojournalism, sport, portraiture, architecture, illustrative, landscape, advertising, commercial & industrial, still life and digital imaging. With a staff of practicing professionals comes a discipline from the conceptual to the technical. The benefits of this are illustrated throughout the work. The exhibition celebrates the commitment, hard work and dedication of each student across their chosen discipline.
Thanks to the photo imaging teaching staff for their hard work and continued support: Eddie Javier, Rob Gale, Naomi Herzog, Guy Little, Bryce Dunkley and James Maher. Inspired by the conflict between truth and deception - qualities inherent of the photographic medium - Sam enjoys creating images that seduce the viewer with their superficially pleasant environments, and then shock or amuse with macabre and witty undertones.
To produce a series of work consistent with this interest for her final folio, Sam has created a number of photographic advertisements for products and services that utilise her unique style and humour to demonstrate each brand’s slogan.
Ultimately, Sam would like to see her work on billboards and the sides of buses, providing amusement for as large an audience as possible.

Throughout childhood, Lani constantly displayed an interest and talent in design and creativity, spending numerous hours sketching her dream home. Inevitably, Lani’s family assumed she would pursue studies in architecture.
It was only during her high school years when she discovered her love for the view through a lens. Whilst studying photography, Lani broadened her initial interest of high-end fashion studio photography to also having a great passion for landscape, street and travel photography.
It is Lani’s dream to one day open her own studio and develop it as an affordable space for students and other photographers to hire.

Blake Barnard
Having spent the last ten years living in Hobart, Blake moved to Melbourne in the beginning of 2013 to finish his studies in photography.
Coming from a professional hospitality background Blake has combined his photographical skills with a keen interest in food and his extensive knowledge of hospitality. He aims to work towards a career photographing food and venue spaces and has been working extensively with local restaurants, bars and cafes.
For the mean-time making a name for himself in Melbourne, he eventually intends to return to Tasmania to capture the rich bounty of the Southern Isle.

Emma is constantly driven by a passion to create visual harmony. She has an honours degree in graphic design and works as a designer and art director. Image making, in its many forms, plays a strong role in her life.
This semester an opportunity to travel with RMIT to Shanghai presented itself. This provided the catalyst needed to combine a passion for travel with documentary and still life photography. Dealing with concepts of place, and the items which surround us, she sought to create a visual narrative exploring this.
In future she hopes to continue her photographic practice alongside her design endeavours.

With a background in performance and a want for image making, Kayzar has been working steadily over the last few years to develop as a commercial and fashion photographer.
Whilst continuing his work in fashion over the last 12 months, he has realised the potential to meld both his performance experience and photography pursuits together.
Pushing his commercial career into specialising in producing images for the music, theatre, and dance industries.
Kayzar also has a developed skill set in retouching and the creation of composites and digitally manipulated images, and has begun to incorporate this more into his commercial output.

Jasmine has broad interests when it comes to photography. Her process has strong ties to the analogue age producing aesthetically beautiful images.
Jasmines work usually surrounds the life style medium. Meanwhile she remains loyal to her personal work of photo and social documentary and art involving youth and nature.
Travelling with RMIT to Shanghai this year allowed Jasmine to broaden her skills with image making to videography, as well as gaining a taste of working commercially in Shanghai.
Her realistic understanding on the balance of commercial and personal work has allowed her to be optimistic for what the future beholds.

Alison is an emerging photographer with a passion for fantasy and story telling.
Growing up immersed in Vogue Magazine and with a love of dress-ups, her stories are realized in the fashion arena. “If you want reality, take the bus.” – David La Chapelle.
This year Alison, through editorial narratives, chose to explore the prevalent notion of shock factor in fashion photography; using sex, violence and disadvantage to garner attention and sell garments.

Terry is a Melbourne based photographer and photographic assistant. Hailing from a small town in Western Victoria, moving in late 2011 to study.
Over the past two years he has gained invaluable knowledge through his studies and experiences while working in the industry. Working as a freelance photographic assistant he has worked with, and learnt from, many prominent Melbourne and Sydney based photographers.
Following the completion of his diploma Terry plans to continue freelancing as a photographic assistant with the goal of further expanding his photography knowledge and skills.
Terry’s main photographic interest is in fashion photography. He has great ambition to develop his career and to become a prolific fashion and portrait photographer.

Miriam Butcher
Miriam is both a finder and creator of images. Taking inspiration from houses seen en route, she pairs “found” exteriors with her creations of imagined interior scenes.
She photographed the homes that made her pull over suddenly, or that she admired walking home from the train, then answered her own question of what’s inside and who might live there.
The interiors were designed, styled and constructed by Miriam, using various types of paper and other materials, with a mix of some found items to complete each scene.
After graduation, Miriam looks forward to continuing to assist photographers and collaborate with other creatives: working on both commercial and personal projects.

National Geographic photographer Lynn Johnson is quoted as saying
‘You want to reveal what life is like - to show things we may never fully understand’.
This is in the forefront of Daniel Campbell’s mind when he approaches his work.
Born in England, Daniel emigrated to Australia 10 years ago. Initially attracted to the landscape and lifestyle he soon became fascinated by the complex diversity of the people.
Daniel hopes his portraits and documentary work go someway to helping us understand who we are and why we have chosen to live on this vast continent.

Angela is a young Melbourne based photographer who takes pleasure in exploring all fields of photography. Her primary focus is on wedding and street photography.
She enjoys capturing raw, pure moments as they naturally occur. Her love for people, and narrative style of shooting, led to her major body of work which is comprised of interactions and the energy shared on the streets in these instances.
Angela is keen and determined to develop herself in the industry as well as expand on personal projects after graduating from RMIT.

Adele has always been a collector of ideas, leaping from one interest to the next. Photography has given her the best set of tools yet to begin arranging the untidy jumble in her head. She is interested in a strict, sparse, orderly way of arranging complicated and esoteric concepts, and prefers poetry over linear narrative.
Obsessed with the creative process, she hopes to find a balance between innovation, subversion and technical discipline.
Ideally, the next few years find her collaborating with creative minds across the fashion, design and publishing industries and adding more creative disciplines to her toolbox.

When Amy first started the Certificate IV In Photo Imaging at RMIT she aspired to be a portrait photographer. After completing the Certificate IV and the Diploma of Photo Imaging she now feels she has found her strengths as a photographer and learnt so many new skills.
Amy enjoys taking portraits/environmental portraits, as well as food photography.
A photographer who inspires Amy is Anton Corbijn. Amy feels Corbijn’s black and white images are always so engaging.
Amy wishes to either work as a commercial photographer or to become a photography teacher.

From rural New Zealand, Michelle dropped her geology degree, packed her bags and headed to Melbourne to follow her creative calling.
Building on her passion for food photography, Michelle chose to broaden her skill set for her major study and delved into commercial still life.
Having assisted in the industry for the past two years, Michelle will continue to do so upon graduating in addition to expanding her folio.

Inspired by the work of Ansel Adams, Ken Duncan and Serge Ramelli, Stephen is interested in travelling the world, freelancing and capturing beautiful frames of nature. Combining his expert knowledge of filters, long exposures and set incremental times to obtain the results he desires.
Basing his ‘Major Studies’ folio on Victorian Seascapes, Stephen would like to work for National Geographic, being commissioned to take jaw dropping images documenting natural landscapes.
The coming year will see Stephen capturing the earth’s beauty the way he would like it to be seen.

Growing up in a family passionate about design, architecture and painting meant Benjamin was exposed to artistic influence during early years, and he soon acquired a certain creative flair that was evident in his hobbies, school work and career aspirations.
Fortunate enough to have travelled frequently as a boy, Benjamin was able to experience a variety of creative mediums and art forms from all different cultures, which has taught him to seek inspiration from almost anywhere, and always felt natural to capture it through the camera lens.
Be it exploring the cobble stoned alleys of Florence or traversing the Australian desert on a beat up motorcycle, inspiration was everywhere and photography became a huge priority in his life with a desire to photograph the technical brilliance and inherent beauty of buildings and landscapes, cars and motorcycles, and people.

Harry is a photographer who loves to capture anything fashion and beauty related. He has always had a passion for this kind of photography and likes to be involved in the process of creating images from start to finish, including styling, hair and makeup.
He says when creating his images he tries to make them “simple yet bold and unforgettable.” He one day wants to end up shooting high end campaigns for fashion magazines, upon graduating he would like to begin assisting photographers and continue building his portfolio.

With a very strong interest in cinema, Jenna Georgopoulos is a photographer who strives to tell a story. Influenced by Stanley Kubric, her interests range from unusual places, forbidden actions and love stories, to pieces of meat.
She enjoys exploring these notions in her work and imagination. Next year, moving to Los Angeles, she plans to pursue a career in direction and filmmaking, while continuing to produce photographic work - including a documentary style book capturing suburban LA, and a short film adaptation of her series “An Imaginary Life”.

Originally from Canberra, Benjamin Hattingh is influenced by the New Colour photographers of the 1970’s and applies this traditional method to telling contemporary Australian stories.
For several years Benjamin has worked documenting the changing Australian social and physical landscape, investigating and challenging the concept of Australian identity and where it lies. More recently his work has focused on smaller stories of everyday people, shining a light on the marginalised and social issues in modern Australia. In his final folio
Benjamin has a produced a series about people living in areas of Melbourne undergoing dramatic changes of social make-up, documenting the displacement of individuals who are being forced out of their homes to make way for new developments.

Georgia Hunter is an aspiring music, portrait and fashion photographer. She first began to have an interest in photography halfway through high school, taking classes to develop her skills and simple, yet cinematic style.
As a passionate music lover, Georgia endeavors to involve musicians and live music into her photography; however, she has also taken keen interest in shooting fashion.
She enjoys collaborating with stylists and clients to capture the perfect story within an image. In the future, she hopes to build industry knowledge through assisting photographers whilst aiming to work freelance or at a magazine.

From a small town in Far North Queensland, Briana moved to Melbourne to fulfil her endless curiosity in people and cultures - using photography as the medium to further these interest.
Briana employs natural tones and textures to create visual stories throughout her work. She not only enjoys capturing the images but more so the conceptual process and challenges behind each one.
Briana has been exploring history and produced a series of twelve images inspired by women of historical and cultural significance. These have been created with a symbolic interpretation to signify which each woman is prominently known for.

Yoel was born in Malang, Indonesia. He received a Bachelor of Business Information Systems in 2010 but decided to work as a photographer.
In Indonesia he has worked as a freelance photographer for 2 years and also had a photography club.
After following his passion as a photographer for several year, he decided to take the next step in his career and move to Australia to study Photo Imaging at RMIT.
Yoel is now focusing his attention on studio portraiture and architecture. After he has finished this course he wants to return to Indonesia to start a photography business.

Judit is a Hungarian photographer who moved to Melbourne in 2009 in pursuit of a creative lifestyle, leaving behind her career as a lawyer. Fascinated by the cultural diversity of the Australian society, she is developing a strong sense for capturing real-life moments, using the strength of documentary style images.
Her passion has developed into a devotion for portraying people and their stories. She creates imagery that is not just visually captivating but also helps us grasp a deeper connection to the subject.
For her major project at RMIT, Judit combined her love for portraiture and still life photography to create a series that explores one’s identity through materialistic possessions.
She envisions herself continuing working as a portrait and documentary photographer, utilising the skills that she has gained in still life photography to help express her vision and storytelling.

Stephanie developed a fascination with food at a young age. This led to a nutrition degree, and the subsequent realisation her interests lay more in aesthetics than science.
She left the lab, but often thinks back to a time when everything was white, stainless steel, and analysed under a faint fluorescent glow. She sees food differently to other people, and tries to use this to her advantage.
Depending on her mood, she dreams of spending her days travelling and working on documentary projects and about food-related issues, or in a studio creating strange still-life compositions.

Influenced by the complexity and the expanse of what light can do, Jarred has developed his major study around this motif. Light is not just used to illuminate the subject, but light has become part of the subject itself.
Adapting techniques used on previous smaller projects, including the feature image Milk Mermaid, his major study focuses on producing fashion looks using light painting.
Outside of the studio, Jarred finds himself coming back to his roots, just himself and nature where his love for photography started.

Haley came into this course thinking she wanted to be a documentary photographer. After spending a year learning new skills she did a complete turn around and discovered her real talents lie in retouching and compositing work.
Since then she has spent the last twelve months honing these skills to put them to use in her major folio. Haley’s work explores people’s inner desires and uses compositing techniques to make the images into something almost ‘dream-like’.
When she graduates, Haley aims to work as a full-time retoucher, specialising in high-end commercial work.

Michael is a Documentary Photographer with a strong interest in portraiture. He likes to work on long-term projects and photographic studies as well as objective real life reportage.
His biggest fascination surrounds the human face. The story it tells about how that person’s environment affects them and the affect they have had on the world.
Michael was lucky enough to take part in the RMIT study tour of Shanghai in 2013. This enabled him to have a taste of foreign documentary work. This was an invaluable experience for Michael as he intends to continue assisting next year, whilst building an intimate documentary portfolio concentrating on marginalized people and cultures.

Having previously studied Archaeology, Stephanie draws on her interest in culture, identity and symbology when creating a fashion or editorial portrait concept. Leaving the sciences to pursue a creative career, Stephanie has become extremely passionate about a professional career in the photographic industry.
She has been assisting Melbourne photographers for the past 18 months to further her knowledge and skill set during her photographic studies, and hopes to continue assisting full time upon graduation.
Throughout the process of this major folio, Stephanie has enjoyed exploring her style, experimenting with complex studio lighting, and collaborating with passionate creatives.

Natalie grew up with a camera in her hand. Forever begging her parents to develop her film, she was never without her camera. Over the years her love of photography has developed into a full-blown passion. From documentary/street photography through to high fashion and beauty portraits she is always up for the job.
Natalie hopes to continue her studies and earn her Bachelor Degree as well as working as a freelance photographer in industry.

Lauren first began documenting still life that she found captivating amongst her sleepy beach-side community on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
A keen observer, she is interested in visual discussion of the social variety and hopes to continue exploration into this while growing as an artist.

Jade’s free spirit and adventurous character are reflected in the work she produces.
With a huge appreciation for memories and the moments that create them, quirk in any given situation, and nature’s charm, she aspires to capture fragments of these through her photography.
Having grown up in the Yarra Valley, Byron Bay, Melbourne and Phillip Island, Jade is adaptive and outgoing, hoping to carry this versatility into the industry, while focusing on the areas of documentary, fine art, editorial and portraiture.
Currently Jade is assisting photographers in Melbourne, developing a better understanding of the commercial world and trying to fill her hunger for knowledge.

Prue is a born collaborator, having previously worked as a stylist in Sydney and London, with international photographers. Her desire to shoot has seen Prue focused on fashion and lifestyle, experimenting by predominately shooting on location.
2013 saw Prue take the opportunity to travel to Shanghai as a documentary photographer working collectively with RMIT art students - in addition to producing her own fashion shoot encapsulating the China she had experienced.
Fervent about the future and deepening her career through assisting, and integrating the possibility of becoming a producer, she hopes to one day return to Shanghai to develop her career further.

Capturing her love of the outdoors, life in general and children’s crazy imaginations; Sandra has created a body of work based on children’s dreams for their future.
This has led to lots of laughter, moments of frustration and an obsession with what the clouds look like on any given day.
When Sandra graduates she plans to work as a portrait, family and wedding photographer in the Melbourne area.

Jack is a Melbourne based photographer. His interest in sport has pushed him towards sports photography and believes all you need is 1/1000th of a second to capture a moment that will last forever.
Jack’s major study has been inspired from an American photographer, Joel Grimes. He thought that his concept would push the boundries and challenge him to create his best work. Although he enjoys taking a stylised approach towards his work he finds he is most comfortable out on the field (or any surface), shooting the action as it happens.
After graduating Jack hopes to land a job photographing sport for one of Australia’s leading newspapers, continuing to shoot a variety of sports, hoping his work will take him around the world.

Rebecca is an enthusiastic well-organized photographer interested in fashion and wedding photography.
She has experience assisting and shooting for other photographers outside of RMIT.
She began her interest in photography at the age of 15 working for a photographer at the time, since then she changed to more art based subjects focusing purely on her new found love and even began photographing freelance jobs. After finishing at RMIT she would love to go on assisting fashion photographers to learn the ins and outs of photographing fashion to eventually begin photographing for herself as well as shooting weddings in her spare time.

Pichet Wilaipich (Pix) arrived in Australia having worked for Esquire Magazine Thailand as a resident editorial photographer. Pix decided to open his mind to the world of photography and is constantly refining his style and exploring many different genres of photography.
His current work reflects sound studio practice in product, commercial, beauty, fashion and portrait photography. For his final folio he has chosen to focus on fashion in studio, collaborating with stylist Nik Maher, to produce a series of tribal inspired fashion images.
Pix strives to work in the advertising industry in Thailand and aims to continue working internationally. He is constantly refining his style of photography and is always open to the clients needs, “Let your imagination run free”.

Mike ReadGraduate 2010Since graduating in 2010 I have continued to build a collection of work, picking up numerous awards along the way including the Editorial category in Capture Magazine’s Emerging Photographer of the Year (2011) awards & The Pool Grant (2012). The past year has seen me spend two months walking around Spain to produce a body of work thanks to the Pool Grant. This work was exhibited in Sydney in the first half of 2013 as part of the Head On Photo Festival. 2014 will see me embark on a series of trips to Indonesia as I start a long term project finding out more about one of our closest and most important neighbours.

Emma PhillipsGraduate 2004Being able to combine one’s passion with one’s daily work is a rarity. For me it’s a reality which never ceases to amaze and delight me as I reflect on where I have come from and where I now stand as a professional photographer. After completing my diploma at RMIT I worked extensively as a freelance assistant and was then fortunate enough to secure a role as the sole producer to one of Melbourne’s top photographers. In 2006 I secured a position with Leader Newspapers as a photo- journalist which enabled me to broaden my skills and contact with the industry.
The time I spent at RMIT are two of the best years of my life. My learning curve was steep, the teaching staff passionate and knowledgeable and all that I learned was relevant and industry-specific. Completing my diploma with RMIT undoubtedly equipped me with the skills necessary to carve a path for myself in the photographic industry. I’ll be forever grateful that they were able to show me that the path existed.
I am currently immersed in the commercial photographic industry, have grown my business steadily since
finishing at RMIT and more than ever I’m garnering work that is creatively satisfying.

Rio Aditya AriantoGraduate 2012Rio graduated in 2012 and is continuing his studies at RMIT, undertaking the BA in photography and working in industry as an assistant and retoucher. Focusing on advertising commercial still life, Rio’s work is the combination of photography and digital imaging, and is often described as vibrant and surrealistic. As one of the recipients of the RMIT graduate in residence program, he is continuing to enhance and extend his folio.

Andrew KellyGraduate 2006
To say RMIT helped me commence a career in photography is about as much of an understatement as I could make. I walked in to an introductory short course there not even knowing what shutter speed was and left a few years later as a graduate in the diploma course. The work placement requirement of the course lead me into an immediate staff position with my hosts, Fairfax Media, where I worked for a few years following the course, covering breaking news and shooting sports and features. In 2010 I relocated to New York City, where I remain. I work constantly, shooting breaking news for Reuters and features for The Wall Street Journal,
as well as commercial jobs for a number of clients including Microsoft, Proctor & Gamble and McDonalds. I also recently got into shooting weddings, signed by Christian Oth Studio, named one of the top ten wedding studios in the world. My images constantly appear in publications globally and last year I won an award for feature photography at the New York Press Photographers Association. Yet to this day, I still hear the priceless lessons from my RMIT lecturers floating around in my head, guiding me as I go. I deeply value the time I had there. It was the perfect start.

Janelle Low Graduate 2010
Since graduating from the Diploma of Photoimaging in 2010 Janelle has worked exclusively in the industry - whether shooting, retouching, assisting or teaching. In 2013 she became the youngest and only second female winner of the $25,000 National Photographic Portrait Prize presented by the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Janelle also became a recipient of the Diploma of Photoimaging’s first ever Graduate in Residency, and was a finalist in the Head On Portrait Prize. she has continued to exhibit in group shows across Melbourne.
Janelle’s first major body of work ‘Blonde-Haired Blue-Eyed Nothing’ which explores the internal and external conflicts of growing up in multicultural Australia will be exhibited at Dianne Tanzer Gallery in early 2014, which will coincide with her first ever limited-edition publication being released of the same series.

From September 16 to october 28, 2013 students from the School of Media and Communication VET, Diploma of Photo Imaging and RMIT University School of Art, Masters of Arts (Art in Public Space) participated in a combined Study Tour to Shanghai, China.
A first time initiative led by Photo Imaging’s Program Coordinator Eddie Javier, the trip had two distinct yet connected goals and outcomes.

The first week was a collaborative artists mapping project with a select group of students from ECNU and the RMIT Masters students who worked in partnership on the project City impressions- Creative map of Shanghai. The students and teachers formed seven groups and through discussion decided upon different ways in which their areas of practice could be combined. The processes used included video, photography, drawing, radical craft and performance with photo imaging students documenting the process of the act of contemporary mapmaking.
The result was the Shanghai map room as an exhibition. This exhibition revealed the multi-faceted ways of depicting and interpreting urban Shanghai scenarios through people, streets, sounds or sights of Lao Cheng Xiang, Shanghai’s Old Town.
The exhibition was held in the ECNU exhibition space on Saturday 28th September 2013 and was opened by Geoff Hogg and Deputy Dean of Design at ECNU.
The second week was an opportunity for the ten Diploma of Photo Imaging students to experience the Shanghai photographic community and culture through an international business. Limelight studios gave two briefs, which the students undertook receiving industry standard critique on finalised images. This time was also used to visit galleries and location of particular photographic interest and cultural significance.
