Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)

Aggregate • Crushed stone, gravel, and sand • Almost always locally available stone • About 95 percent of the total weight of an asphalt pavement consists of

aggregates

Asphalt Cement • The remaining five percent of asphalt pavement • Black liquid that acts as the glue to hold the pavement together • A petroleum product generally obtained from the same refineries that produce

gasoline and heating oil • Asphalt Cement is one of the heaviest, most viscous parts of petroleum

Asphalt Emulsion

Combination of three basic ingredients 1. Asphalt 2. Water 3. Emulsifying agent

• Ingredients are introduced into a colloid mill • The emulsifier keeps the asphalt droplets in a stable suspension • Liquid product has a consistency ranging from that of milk to

heavy cream • Can be used in cold processes for road construction and

maintenance

Asphalt Emulsion • Does not require a petroleum solvent

to make it liquid • In most cases, can be used without

additional heat • Additionally, asphalt emulsions offer

great flexibility in their application • Asphalt emulsions are environmentally

friendly

Both of these factors contribute to energy savings

There are little or no hydrocarbon emissions created with their use

Shingles Mats Organic-based • Manufactured with a base (also termed mat or

substrate) made of various cellulose fibers such as recycled waste paper and wood fibers

• Organic base is then saturated with a specially formulated asphalt coating and surfaced with weather-resistant mineral granules

Fiberglass-based • Manufactured with a mat composed entirely of glass

fibers of varying lengths and orientations • Fiberglass base is then surfaced with a specially-

formulated asphalt coating, followed by weather-resistant mineral granules

Shingle Types Strip Shingles • Approximately three times as long as wide. • The most common type is the "three-tab" shingle Laminated Shingles • Contain more than one layer of tabs to create extra thickness • Referred to as “three-dimensional” or “architectural” • Favorite among builders, roofing contractors and homebuyers Interlocking Shingles • Individual shingles that are mechanically fasten to each other • Used to provide greater wind resistance Large Format Shingles • Generally rectangular or hexagonal in shape and do not utilize cutouts

Roll Roofing

Saturated Felt • Asphalt-impregnated, organic-based felt • Used as an underlayment between the roof deck and the roofing material • Produced in a variety of weights Specialty-Eaves Flashings • Self-adhering, polymer-modified bituminous sheet material • Designed for special flashing applications along roof eaves and in other areas Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roofing • The top surface of the roll is

imbedded with mineral granules • Used alone as a primary roof

covering, most frequently on small or secondary-use buildings

Frequently Used Pumps

• The Asphalt Pump series are economical General Purpose pumps utilizing a "floating" rotor design

• The jacketed head and rotor bearing sleeve are designed to allow passage of saturated steam or heat transfer fluid to melt asphalt that has solidified in the pump prior to startup

Challenges

Housekeeping and Product Loss (waste) • Creating more interest in sealed pumps • Packed pump users are wanting more control over leakage

Cold Starts • Causing failure of packing, mechanical seals, and potentially

rotor damage

The GlobalGear® Answer

Shaft Size • Properly sized shafts will better handle high discharge

pressures and spikes without excessive deflection

Seal Vent to Suction • Seal vent to suction will help to prevent product build-up in

front of the seal • Seal vent to suction reduces shock of discharge pressure spikes

GlobalGear® is ideally built for Mechanical Shaft Seals!!
