• RSA is part of of Austrian Road Safety Programme– Introduction of mandatory safety checks for

all road construction projects

– Creation of a handbook with checklist

– Pilot projects on the entire road network – including roads within city limits

– Evaluation of the pilot projects and of the handbook

– Instruction of auditors

• RSA Handbook including checklists was published in August 2004

• RSAs are not compulsory at the moment

• Currently the RSA guideline is under progress of being made compulsory for the motorway network

• An updated RSA Guideline is currently prepared (should be ready in summer 2005)

• 15 Audits on the motorway network have already been carried out

• Experience in all audit phases from planning to opening phase

• Generally positive results

• ~25 deficits were found in each audit phase and ~20 have been solved

• The RSA is currently commissioned and financed by the road owner

• RSAs are carried out by teams of auditors (road safety experts) from the – Austrian Road Safety Board

– Civil Engineers specialized in road safety

– Experts from the administrations
