Background

There are currently vast amounts of published road safety

evidence, from a wide range of sources, on a large variety of

topics. Whilst much of this evidence is publicly available, the

time burden of searching for this information can act as a

barrier to the use of the best evidence on road safety.

People new to road safety and other interested parties can find

the wealth of evidence confusing and daunting, which ultimately

can influence the success of road safety initiatives.

RoSPA’s Mission is to Save Lives and Reduce Injuries

Aims of the Project

On the 11 May 2011, the Department for Transport published the Strategic Framework for Road Safety. The Framework’s action plan set out the government’s commitment to improve access to road safety research by: Developing a Portal for Road Safety Professionals that’s independent

from Government and in accordance to the Big Society Principle This will signpost key information and repositories on road safety that

can be used by the professionals and public alike Launch date – 2012

Previously referred to as Better Use of Road Safety Evidence (BURSE)

Now known as Road Safety Observatory

RoSPA’s Mission is to Save Lives and Reduce Injuries

Aims of the Web Portal

The first point of call for all road safety professionals for information and guidance

To also be appropriate for other users - such as members of the public, students, Fire, Police, Health, officials etc

Provide summaries of the evidence on different road safety issues with references back to the original research

Compile the evidence used to write the summaries in a searchable database with detail about the methods and results

And therefore – provide robust information to support road safety practitioners in decision making and intervention planning

RoSPA’s role – constructing the website

Similar approach to RoSPA’s current portfolio of road safety

websites which have their own branding and are independent

of the main RoSPA site.

The DfT and RoSPA have recent experience in delivering the

Road Safety ETP Evaluation Project website

Producing Summaries of Evidence

Members of the programme board will write the different summaries

Standardised structure and sources of evidence

There will be a review of the content by an editorial board

The summaries will not be systematic nor fully comprehensive

Getting Involved

We want to develop this with you!

Usability testing – is the web portal laid out intuitively

Assessing the reviews – do they contain the information that you expect and want
