5 Roadrunner Ramblings October 2019

Top DownVance BassRegion President

Ah, change is in the air! The balloons are up, the temperatures are down, and we can finally really put the top down and enjoy having a cabriolet. In case you have ever considered one, let me tell you that “fun in the summer sun” is not a working concept in New Mexico. But in the spring, and now … aaahhh!

There are other changes afoot as well. Soon we’ll be voting on a new slate of officers for the club. My time as president is drawing to a close and soon it will be time to pass the ceremonial claw hammer on to George Watkins. I’ve enjoyed being vice-president and then president, but it hasn’t been without challenges and waking up in the morning wondering about the same thing I laid awake last night wondering about (see below). I’ll be ready for a little time off, come January, and the club will be in good hands.

Another wind is blowing, one which may or may not bring a change. We have been growing steadily over the last four or five years, which is a wonderful blessing, but also comes with some challenges. For example, when we passed 400 primary members we were “bumped up” to a Class IV Region, which means that as soon as we get 401 members, we still are compared to regions with many more members. Nevertheless, The Ramblings continues to win awards competing with much larger regions, a sign of real success. That’s a good thing!

Unfortunately, we are also running up against some problems larger regions have to deal with. The most pressing one is with our social events. We seem to be victims of our own success, in that our Meet & Greet groups are getting too large to find places to

accommodate us (and our requirements). The more of us there are, the fewer places we find that can seat us all, that serve alcohol, and that will give a large group like ours separate checks, all of which we have insisted on since the club began.

As the group grows and the number of venues shrinks, there are several ways we could deal with the situation. We could give up holding Meet & Greet dinners altogether – but who wants that? Or we could hold them every two months, so we don’t go through the available restaurants so fast. (Some bigger regions only do them once a quarter.) We could limit the number of people who can sign up. We could go to restaurants or hotels that have big banquet rooms and a fixed-price, catered menu. We could hold potluck or bring-your-own-bag-lunch dinners at public picnic grounds.

Yep, they all have their drawbacks in addition to solving some part of our problem, but we really can’t go back to the old days and old ways. Nor do we want to – who wants the region to shrink down to 100 members again, just so we can all cram into a small restaurant?

We’ve already started making some changes to the Meet & Greet schedule, and they’ve been met with enthusiasm. The Saturday luncheons give the chance to eat with the club to a lot of people who work on weekday evenings, or who live too far away to drive in and drive home on Thursday. When we meet on at Saturday noon, we get a more diverse (and usually considerably larger) group. Making the social events more available to people from northern New Mexico and southern Colorado is really successful, so that’s a great

I joined in 2013, when I bought my first Porsche (a 2002 Boxster). I had had friends with Porsches, so I just thought joining PCA was part of ownership, which seemed like a great idea.

I’m retired, after 29 years as a computer systems engineer, with a second career as a church music director. I’ve had a slew of air-cooled VWs (and a couple of cheater diesels) before buying a Porsche.

We now have a black 997 cabrio, my daily driver. (Give me the “Porsche wave” if you see me around Albuquerque.)

I like to do all activities -- social, autocross, drive-outs, tech sessions.

As past president, I have considerable experience serving on the board, and in the leadership of the board.

result from a seemingly small change (even though it pushed the size problem back to the front).

In any case, change will come – the seeds are already planted by our growth – and we just have to wait to see what the flowers look like. I would like to hear from you about your preferences for Meet & Greets, or suggestions for how to make them work better with a larger club.

And finally, I want to repeat my gratitude to Marsha MenNe, who has kept the Meet & Greets rolling along for the last six years, and to Dennis Chamberlain before her, who set such a high standard for our social events. Please help me (and the next Social Chair) figure out how to carry on their great traditions.

What an exciting time to be a Porschephile. At the time you are reading this Porsche of Albuquerque will be hosting the unveiling of the new 911 Carrera this coming Saturday night. Now in its eighth generation the 911 v992 is still the centerpiece of the Porsche sports car line up. The new 911 will include Carrera 4 and 4S and available in a Cabriolet. They continue to be powered by a twin turbo 3.0 flat six developing 379 hp at 6500 rpm. The standard transmission is the 8-speed PDK, and acceleration from 0 to 60 takes only 4.0 seconds. The base 911 Carrera will start at $97,400.

Apparently right behind will be the mass introduction of the Porsche Taycan. The first fully-electric sports car was introduced to the public in early September with a world premier held on three continents. The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo and the Turbo S. The Turbo S will push you seriously back in your seat with 750 hp. But, remember, the word Turbo here is just a word. There is no forced air induction. For Porsche’s purposes it refers to a “trim” level. Less powerful variants of the all wheel drive Taycan will follow later this year. Not sure when we will see one in the local showroom.I’ve included in this issue of Ramblings a story from Porsche newswire on the early (1890’s) development of the electric vehicle from Ferdinand Porsche. Again, the brand was way ahead of its time.

Who knows, maybe next year at the Corrales Roundup we will have these new Porsches to marvel at. For this year’s 49th annual Roundup the Roadrunner Region was treated to a concourse like day at the home of Bruce Phillips and Debra Burns. Clear blue skies, green grass, tent shade and a palate of colors from over 100 cars. I can’t think of a more relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Thanks to Willard MenNe, Jules Doty, Alan Mitchell and Ann Mulhern we have a great gallery of photos in this issue of Ramblings. The October Ramblings also contains a ballot for election of Roadrunner Region officers for 2020 and region awards for 2019. The region board had tackled some important regional initiatives, like an updating of the bylaws. The responsibilities of these volunteer members goes far beyond just coming to a monthly meeting. The bylaws require that we notify the region membership by October 15 with the names of nominees. The ballots need to be returned by November 15. Last year we got our electronic ballot up and running. The Roadrunner Region more than doubled its return ballots. This year, again you can print out the ballot page and mail it to the P.O. box listed on the bottom. Or, members should look for an email from electionrunner.com. We will notify everyone via email when the ballot will be sent out. October is going to be a busy month for the region, with something going on every weekend. Make sure to take note of the region calendar. Thanks for reading the October issue of award winning Ramblings.

49th AnnualCorrales roundup

Story by Steve Waller, photos by Alan Mitchell, Jules Doty, Mike Courtney, Willard MenNe

Consider for a moment the Porsche adage “it’s not about the cars, it’s about the people. Then, think about the 49th annual Corrales Roundup. Is it about the cars or the people? If I had to choose one it would be about the cars. Like no other event on the Roadrunner calendar, the Roundup puts the cars center stage. At Bruce Phillips and Debra Burns home in Corrales nearly everyone takes a leisurely stroll out to the north field and then the south field and finally the garages. And then the food and drinks.

For maybe the first time, the number of cars, including the hosts, passed the 100 mark. The total attendance pushed the 200 ceiling. At 49 years and running, the Roundup is by far the longest running event on the Roadrunner calendar…maybe in all of PCA. Many thanks to Bruce and Debra for graciously hosting all of us Porschephiles. Next year we celebrate 50 years of the Corrales Round Up. Get ready!

Zone 9 Rep

The “Configurator Salivator”- Hurry up and wait!Awareness, Trial, Usage. With one-half of a career dedicated to marketing, I get it. As a marketer bringing something new to the world, you spend your waking hours finding new ways to get people aware of your latest really cool thing, then you find an enticement to get them to try it, so that you can finally get them hooked into repeat purchases. So at least I’m acutely aware of where I stand in this time tested process when it comes to my relationship with Porsche cars. Here’s the problem though. I’m fortunate enough to be a repeat purchaser- a loyalist. That means I know what I want next, and have been waiting for it to exist. My shopping list was “essentially” finalized back in January 2018 when I pulled out my credit card to place a bet that something might happen in the future that would match the shopping list.

The list went like this. #1 Mid-Engine- I’m just partial to the physics on canyon roads and the practicality for long trips with the frunk AND a trunk. #2 Convertible- Ever since selling the RS60 Boxster for the Cayman R, Julie and I have BOTH missed having a long range, top down option. #3. Classic Porsche- a six-cylinder with a manual. Yeah, it is kind of a throwback. #4 Long-term potential- just maybe the possibility of some nostalgic collectability down the road, or at least a less steep depreciation curve. By this I mean “lowish” production numbers, a six cylinder sound with sport exhaust, the last of the mid-engine 6 cylinder normally aspirated engines, and finally (with tongue firmly in my cheek) the first mid-engine 911 with a 4.0 liter engine. If you hung in through the last paragraph, and you’ve been looking at any of the recent Porsche news, then you know that all criteria on my shopping list have now been ANNOUNCED, in the form of the 2020 Boxster Spyder (718).

Kids aren’t the only ones famous for the cry- “are we there yet??” Just ask the Porsche sales rep who took my payment back in January 2018. “Dear Porsche AG marketing guys. I know what I want. You’ve told me it’s real. You hung a poster announcing it, as I visited the factory in June. You brought one- a REAL ONE- to the July Porsche Parade in Boca Raton. You let me take home several posters. You hosted writers in Scotland, including our own Panorama editor Rob Sass, to enable magazine and YouTube content everywhere I look in August and September. And as of this date, I don’t even know (nor apparently does my dealer) when I will be able to place my order for a promised delivery in the spring of 2020.” I’d never send this to them, but telling you makes me feel better!

Configurator as a pacifier. Apparently, I only THOUGHT I knew what I wanted- until my sales guy sent me to the configurator! I’m now online at the Porsche Cars North America site, fine tuning what is probably my 10th iteration over as many hours. It seems as though those marketers are telling me “Here suck on this, you make stop crying.” Well, they may be right. And thanks to the configurator, I find that I’m waiting for an 8th generation 911 (aka 992) to show up somewhere in Utah in a new color called “Gentian Blue”- a color also offered on the 718 Spyder. I just don’t feel that I can trust that the configurator image on my monitor- without actually seeing that color “live”. So after all the crying, if the phone were to ring today, ready to take my order, I might have to eat crow and let my dealer know that I need a little more time. So giving credit where credit is due, while the marketing types may have dragged out the “hype” cycle, they also found a way to keep me engaged during the wait. I call it the “configurator salivator”. Thinking about your next new Porsche? Go online and play around with it. It comes in lots of flavors!Rich Sanders Zone 9 Rep, PCA

2020 Election

Evelyn and I joined PCA in 2012 after trading our Boxster S for a Carrera S. We quickly became interested in autocross after going to Belen to watch an autocross event and started participating in events

that same year. This led to attending social events and participating in drive outs.

In 2017 I retired as the Albuquerque District Director for the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Departmen of Labor. I managed five offices covering New Mexico and West Texas. Prior to this, I served in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

We currently have a 2011 Boxster Spyder (which we autocross) and a 2016 Cayenne. We have also owned a 2008 911 S, a 2003 Boxster S and a 2017 Macan.

We enjoy all of the activities the club has. We have a great autocross program that is attracting more and more Porsche drivers. The meet and greets are terrific and we enjoy getting together with everyone and seeing new members. Last, but not least, our drive outs have been fantastic. The recent drive out to Lamy was a big success. We hope to see more activities like these in the upcoming year.

I bring a strong management background and organizational skills to the board. I the next year, I want to provide all the support necessary to make Fiesta a success for the Club. I would also like to increase drive outs (more frequent) and find new activities for the club to participate in.

I drive a Porsche 911 GTS. I bought this car because I thought GTS stood for Got The Salsa. So, I of course got it in red. I tend to do things by the book. Currently I’m reading the Idiots Guide to Instapot Cooking.

After a career in the Major Leagues I currently work at the national labs calculating the trajectories of baseballs hit on Fridays. OK, seriously I’ve been the Roadrunner Region secretary for the past year. I bring organizational skills and critical thinking acumen to the board. I am also a private business owner. Thank you for your vote. And if you come to the Chili Cook Off you can taste my salsa.

I joined RRRPCA because a friend convinced me to. My car background is none but I fell in love with my Boxster the minute I sat in it and after my first manual shift in it, love at first drive. 2007 Silver Boxster. My favorite activities are AUTOCROSS!!!!!!!! Ideas or talents? I just want to have some fun

Cathie Tardy, CPA Treasurer

Hi Roadrunner Region. My name is Kai Gerkey and I am running for our regions Secretary position.

Although I have been a PCA member since 1980, my wife, Lorie and I joined RRR this year as multi-region members from Southern Arizona Region.

I have spent the last 30 years in hospital administration and physician clinic management. Prior to that I was a geophysicist for the oil industry in Oklahoma.

We have had numerous Porsches throughout the years. Currently we are the proud owners of a beautiful racing yellow 2016 GT4. Loving all that modern technology gives us! We also have a 1997 C2S and a 1973 911T (which was previously owned by my father who was very active in the Carrera Region).

We participate in a number of different club events. We love touring the state in destination drive outs, meet and greets, but our favorite events are DE’s. We have to fill our need for speed and experience the car’s full potential.

I have held a variety of board positions in two other regions. I have served 5 years on the board of War Bonnet Region in Oklahoma; serving as Secretary, Treasurer, VP and President. I also served as Auto Cross Chair for a number of years. In Southern Arizona Region, I served as Treasurer and Auto

Cross Chair. In 2005, I participated in the PCA DE Instructor’s school and was certified as a PCA DE instructor. In 2010, Southern Arizona Region hosted a PCA DE instructor course. I was chosen as one of the course instructors. I also have 15 years of community board experience with Boy’s and Girl’s Club, several Chamber of Commerce boards and Rotary Club.

I bring a combination of past board experience along with the financial acumen to help our club navigate the current and future growth. This can be accomplished through gathering input from current members and formulating a plan to implement and sustain changes that are positive for the club.

I look forward to serving the RRR.

21 Roadrunner Ramblings October 2019

This is my first year as a PCA member. After about six months of research and dreaming of a owning a Porsche, in November of 2018, I got to drive home from Fargo, ND a used 2018 718 Cayman. It’s been nearly a year later, and I still think is a work of art. On top of that, I’ve got to meet an incredible group of people at all the PCA sponsored

Autocross races every month. I have a background in military, commercial, and contract aviation. Currently I’m running operations for 10 Tanker, an aerial firefighting company headquartered out of Albuquerque, NM.

Robert “Rob” Burrus Member at Large

My wife, Susan, and I decided several years ago, while she was attending Graduate School in Santa Fe, that it would be our retirement home. Having achieved that goal in March of 2017 we moved here that summer, and joined The Roadrunner Region of PCA in November of the same year. We have been members of the Porsche Club since 2006, and previously belonged to regions in Northern New Jersey, the Carolinas and Orange County, California. Our reason for always joining the local PCA region wherever we lived is simple – the people! We have made great friends across the country, and enjoyed terrific adventures through the PCA.

I retired in 2017 after 26 years in the contract security industry. My last position was overseeing the Southeast US and Puerto Rico for a major national security company. Before that I spent 21 years in various aspect of the automotive industry, primarily aftermarket products. Susan came from a banking background in New York before becoming an art therapist and career coach. In Santa Fe she has returned to her first love of being an artist.

The one and only Porsche I have ever owned is a 2000 Boxster S. I purchased it in Buffalo, NY as a 50th birthday present to myself. I figured I would upgrade when I got tired of driving it, but that hasn’t happened yet, so I spend many of my available hours cleaning and maintaining it, and it still looks as good as the day I bought it.

Since January I have assisted Marc Schwartz, RRRPCA Membership Chairman, as the Santa Fe Member Liaison. As our ranks continue to grow in Santa Fe

and north my goal has been to help new members in this area become acclimated into our club. I have committed to continuing in that role. Susan and I thoroughly enjoy the social aspect of the Roadrunner Region, and I look forward to supporting new events for our members. I recently helped plan the Santa Fe drive-out to our Lamy Amtrak Station event, and hope to participate in the planning of future drive-outs. I am a member of the 2020 Santa Fe Fiesta planning committee, and while I am not chairing any particular committee, I am committed to supporting several of them over the upcoming months as we organize this great event.

I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Board of the Roadrunner Region of the PCA!

22Roadrunner Ramblings October 2019

I have been a member of the PCA since 2015, originally in the Heart O’ Dixie Region (North Alabama) before moving to New Mexico in 2016. My car is a seal gray 2003 911 Turbo, one of a few seal gray 996 Turbos I’ve noticed in the region! I’m an engineer supporting the Air Force Research Lab at Kirtland Air Force Base, and have spent a good amount of time down in the Las Cruces/White Sands Missile Range area - mainly in my prior life when I was living in Huntsville, AL. Hopefully I can bring some of my experiences from the HOD region to make the RRR even better.

I’ve had a bit of a lifelong fascination with Porsches; an uncle owned a 928 in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s and my father briefly owned a 912 in the late ‘60s as a young Navy pilot, during which time he was a member of the PCA. While I got to ride in the 928, the 912 was long gone before I was born! My fear when I first joined was that the PCA would be a

bunch of, well, stuck up air cooled Porsche people looking down on those of us with newer vehicles. I learned quickly that was not the case in either the HOD region or here. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you in socials and drive-outs, and hope to meet the rest of you along the way.

Thank you for the opportunity to become a Member at Large for the RRR. My wife and I of twenty-eight years, Charlotte, have lived in Albuquerque for seventeen years. We lived in Tucson and Denver prior to moving to Albuquerque. Both of us are Electrical Engineers and we have a turtle named Turbo. I retired in January 2019 from my career as an Electrical Engineer working for Energy Companies and for Consulting Firms in Power Systems Engineering.and Software Development. My responsibilities on a regional and national level included managing engineer/design resources for clients, profit/loss for office operations, and business development activities for growth in target industries and regions.

I have been a member of PCA/RRR for nearly two years and have a 2008 911 Turbo Cabriolet and a 2015 Macan S. I joined PCA/RRR to be around others that are passionate about Porsches, share experiences, make new friends and learn more about the club. I really enjoy the food events and

get togethers with lots of cars, people and food. Definitely looking forward to becoming more active in the club and events.

I believe that many of the personal and professional interests, skills and experiences that I have such as passion for Porsches, managing profit/loss of projects and offices, developing budgets, interpersonal skills, and business growth/sales strategy and planning will be very useful as a Member at Large for the RRR and I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute.

23 Roadrunner Ramblings October 2019

I joined the RRR PCA about two years ago shortly after purchasing my first Porsche: a beautifully maintained low mileage 2006 Cayman S. My hunt for this car began after participating in an HPDE with the Carrera Region PCA, with a non-Porsche car. During the event I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the group and how welcoming everyone was. I was also impressed with how those Porsches hustled their way around the track! After a little research and a few months of searching, I ended up finding a great car. I’m now convinced I’ll always have one in my garage. Since “drinking the Kool-Aid,” I’ve moved on from the ’06 to a 2014 Cayman S.

I grew up and went to school over on the east coast and joined the Air Force right out of college. I first came to Albuquerque back in 1992 for MC-130 flight training at Kirtland AFB. After twenty-three great Air Force years with assignments all over the world, Albuquerque seemed like the best place for my family and I to “retire.” As a civilian, I now help manage the Air Force’s Special Operations and Combat Rescue flight simulator and aircrew training program.

My family consists of my wife Shelly (a Florida native), three teenage boys, John, Andy and Eric, and two dogs, Bandit and Duchess. Slowly but surely, each one has been joining me in PCA events. I am especially looking forward to Andy joining the autocross season next year.

One thing I would love to see the club sponsor is a teen-driving course. Many car clubs across the country sponsor these types of events, and I think we should join their ranks. I have already received enthusiastic responses from many RRR PCA

members, and have begun working the effort with Tire Rack Street Survival (TRSS). With any luck, we’ll see NM’s first-ever TRSS event here in Albuquerque soon.

I would also like to see the club continue to grow the number of drive-outs done annually. I have been to just about every scenic nook and cranny of this state and our neighboring ones. I’d love an opportunity to share these great roads with fellow enthusiasts, and look forward to expanding the drive-out calendar.

What drew me to Porsches and PCA were the enthusiasts and the diverse opportunities to get out and enjoy the car. I enjoy everything from cars and coffee to autocross… drive-outs to HPDE. So far I’ve met a great bunch of folks and it is always fun to either chase them thru the mountains or chat with them about the cars. I look forward to taking a more active role in the club and hope I can serve as a member of the board.

THE HISTORY: PORSCHE, THE ELECTRICAL PIONEER

The electric powertrain is embedded deep in the Porsche DNA.

Courtesy of Porsche newswire

Ferdinand Porsche, later the founder of the company of the same name, was fascinated by electricity even as a teenager. As early as 1893, the 18-year-old installed an electric lighting system in his parents’ house. In the same year Porsche joined Vereinigte Elektrizitäts-AG Béla Egger in Vienna. After four years there, he progressed from mechanic to head of the testing department. The first vehicles he designed also had electric drives — so the history of Porsche begins with the electric drive. In 1898, Ferdinand Porsche designed the Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton. The vehicle was powered by an octagonal electric motor, and with three to five PS it reached a top speed of 25 km/h. In 1899, Porsche joined the carriage maker in Vienna, k.u.k. Hofwagenfabrik Ludwig Lohner & Co.There he developed the electric wheel hub motor. In 1900, the first Lohner-Porsche Electromobile with this innovation was presented at the Expo in Paris. With 2 x 2.5 PS it reached a top speed of 37 km/h. Lohner’s reason for a vehicle with an electric motor

sounds as topical today as it did then, especially in relation to the era of mass motorisation: the air was “ruthlessly spoiled by the large number of petrol engines in use”. Also in 1900, Porsche designed the world’s first functional hybrid car, the “Semper Vivus” (Latin for “always alive”). The technology, marketed as the Lohner-Porsche system, also had applications beyond the sphere of electric vehicles. Porsche extended the car’s range by not using a battery as an energy source, but instead using a combustion engine to drive a generator and thus supply the wheel hub with electrical energy. One year later, the production-ready version was born as the Lohner-Porsche “Mixte”. However, the Lohner-Porsche also demonstrated why electric mobility has failed over the decades: despite its modest power output, the car weighed almost two tonnes. The lack of infrastructure and the short range put an end to electromobility for a long time. The idea was resurrected more than 100 years later: With the development of lithium-ion batteries suitable for use in vehicles and ever more stringent legal requirements for pollutant and carbon dioxide emissions, the focus turned once more to electric drive systems. With the Cayenne S Hybrid in 2010, Porsche paved the way for electromobility in the company. As the first parallel full hybrid in the luxury car class, the Panamera S Hybrid was the most economical Porsche to date with a fuel consumption of 6.8 l/100 km (NEDC), despite a

power output of 380 PS. Also in 2011, Porsche tested three all-electric Boxster E models. The production-ready 918 Spyder was presented in 2013. Two years later, the Panamera S E- Hybrid once again led the way in the segment as the world’s first plug-in hybrid – now with 306 kW (416 PS) and a purely electric range of 36 kilometres. In the second Panamera generation, Porsche embraced electric performance across all model variants: the boost strategy adapted from the 918 Spyder super sports car enabled performance of the kind typically associated with sports cars, but combined with high efficiency — both in the 340 kW (462 PS) Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and in the top model, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The third generation of Porsche’s plug-in hybrid drive, the Turbo S E-Hybrid, now powers the top versions of the Panamera and Cayenne. They combine exceptional performance with maximum efficiency: a four-litre V8 engine and an electric motor generate a system output of 500 kW (680 PS; Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: Fuel consumption combined 3.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 74 g/km; electricity consumption (combined) 16.0 kWh/100 km; Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid: Fuel consumption combined 3.9 – 3.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 90 – 85 g/km; electricity consumption (combined) 19.6 – 18.7 kWh/100 km). These models are the sportiest vehicles in their respective segments, not despite but because of their hybrid drive.

• Engine Air Filter (981/982 Boxsters and Caymans have 2 of them)

• Engine Oil Filter (older cars have a spin-on type filter, new ones have an insert)

• Cabin [Pollen] Filter

• Fuel Filter (external filter up to 2000, after that it’s integrated in the fuel pump)

• Transmission Filter (Tiptronics)

A filter’s function is to scrub clean the medium that passes through it by forcing it through very small porosity in the material. In plain English, the filter’ s function is to stop dirt. No matter where that filter is located.

Depending on the type and use, the filter could be made from paper, foam, metal, plastic and a myriad of other materials.

Engine Air Filter: Dirt into the engine can cause scratches in the cylinder walls and also dirties up the oil. You need to stop that dirt.

Most modern Porsches come with a paper filter or a combination of paper/foam. These filters do a great job at stopping dirt, yet allowing enough air through to produce the HP they were intended for.

There are some myths that I’d like to dispel concerning air filters.

One of the first mods people want do to their car is to buy an aftermarket air filter because it claims that it makes more power. 99.9% of the time that’s not true.

The amount of air that can go into a normally aspirated engine depends on the cross section (area) of the throttle body, and the air filter is many times larger than the throttle body, so it will allow all of the air that that engine can breathe in.

If you put a less restrictive filter than OEM meaning that the holes are larger, it’s only going to let more dirt through because as we said before, the amount of air is dictated by the throttle body’s size. In the image you can see the throttle body’s size (pink circle) in comparison with the whole air filter in a 996 Carrera.

Then there are the reusable (oil-impregnated-gauze) filters which claim to let more air through yet trap more dirt because of the oil. The dirt part may be marginally true, but no more air will be sucked through because of what we explained before.

But there is also the oil issue.

The majority of these filters will let tiny oil droplets get pulled from the filter and into the air stream going into the engine.

This air must first pass by the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) which measures the amount of air flowing in so that the computer (ECU) can add the correct amount of gasoline. But oil deposits on the MAF’s hot wire will foul the measurement and foul the MAF which is not inexpensive. Stay away from these.

Tech Tips from PedroIT’S A DIRTY JOB

Finally there’s the Cold Air Intakes that also advertise more HP. If you look at your Porsche and follow the path of the air going into the engine you’ll see that it is cold air, or at least ambient temperature air because it doesn’t dwell in the engine compartment. Modern Porsches channel the outside air directly through the filter, past the MAF and into the throttle body, so they all have cold air intakes from the factory!

The best advice is use the OEM filter and replace it as recommended or sooner if you drive in a dusty environment.

Engine Oil Filter: During the engine’s normal operation tiny bits of metal and other materials are washed out by the oil and then trapped by the oil filter. These particles, if left unfiltered could eventually cause damage to the cylinder walls, and many other internal parts that need clean oil for lubrication.

The older cars use the metal spin-on filter, while the newer ones have the plastic reusable canister with a disposable, single-use, paper oil filter insert, but they both do exactl;y the same job: stop debris.

It is recommended that every time you change your oil filter you cut it open and carefully inspect it for foreign material, especially metal.

This is a window into the engine allowing us to see what’s going on inside it and if any measures need to be taken before damage occurs.

Cabin [pollen] Filter: As it’s name implies, this filter scrubs the air coming into the car’s cabin. On a hardtop coupe I think it’s a great idea, especially if you are an allergic person and it’s spring time..... but on a convertible?

Most pollen filters are impregnated with active carbon particles to eliminate odors.

Fuel Filter: On pre-2001 Porsches you can find an external fuel filter, generally in the tunnel where the fuel lines run from the tank to the engine.

These filters are in-line type and have a limited life so they require replacing. Obviously, you need to keep the fuel very clean since you don’t know what’s inside the gas pump’s underground tanks.

On newer Porsches, the fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump and is submerged in gasoline inside the tank. These are self-cleaning and require no regular service.

Automatic [Tiptronic] Transmission Filter: This filter is located inside the transmission’s oil pan and needs to be replaced when doing the recommended transmission service schedule. It gets incredibly dirty and clogged at the end of its life and the transmission shifts much better after replacing.

As you have seen, each one of your car’s filter is of vital importance. Each one has a service life and should be replaced when scheduled or before, if your car is driven in very dusty conditions.

Sometimes, even replacing them is a dirty job.
