Margo and I took a trip in October. We took the 911, of course, because the original goal was to see “The Porsche Effect” at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. From that basic idea, the trip grew a bit: in addition to the Petersen, we visited family in Flagstaff and Las Vegas, we saw the Queen Mary and heard the LA Philharmonic, visited friends in Santa Barbara, put the top down and drove up the recently reopened Pacific Coast Highway, went to Sacramento and to the California State Railroad Museum, stayed with family north of Sacto, then drove down the Central Valley to I-40 and the road home.

Between this trip and one I did with a friend last year, I now have some serious long-distance seat time in the car. Last year’s trip was almost 2000 miles and the recent one was a few miles short of 3000. Here’s what I have observed:

The seats in a 997 are incredibly comfortable. I’m a skinny guy with no natural padding and intermittent back problems. I had absolutely no seat fatigue or back issues after 12 days and 2968 miles. It’s the most comfortable car I’ve ever driven.

The traffic in California is famously insane and Porsche famously sells a lot of cars there. These two things are not unrelated. When the traffic is barreling down the freeway at 85 mph, having a car with that kind of power and handling gave me much more confidence than if were in, say, a Prius. And if you get stuck going the other direction, where the traffic is moving at maybe 18 mph, those comfortable seats are welcome again.

Even at 85 mph, the car averaged right at 27 mpg. The Prius would have used less gas, of course, but this is a 385 hp sports car getting gas mileage that was reserved for “economy” cars like the 60 hp VW Beetle, a generation ago. Many cars get worse mileage the faster you drive, but the 911 does about the same at 60, 75 or 85, so clearly the aerodynamics play a part in that efficiency. I think it’s impressive.

I have never named my cars, as some people like to do, but this one has now been dubbed “Dirty Bird”. You accumulate a lot of dirt and bugs over the course of 3000 miles and it’s worse on a black car. But I had washed it carefully and put a really good coat of wax on it before we left, so cleaning all that gunk off was a piece of cake, no worse than the usual rinse I give it to get the garage dust off, really. Wax is your friend.

And remember that compact jump-starter battery I wrote about a couple of months ago? I had to use it. In LA, we parked by a guy with an older Prius that wouldn’t start, so I whipped out my little wonder and started him right up. Booyah!

6Roadrunner Ramblings December 2018

Fifth Gear Steve Waller Editor

Today, I may have committed a sin in the Porsche world. Today for the first time since I’ve owned my car, I took it to a car wash. Father Ferdinand please forgive me. As any Porsche sports car owner can attest, washing your road dusty friend is like….well, you fill in the blank. As life goes, I was going out of town and wanted to wash the car before I left, so it would be clean for the garage cover. Time got short and the attendant staffed car wash was the ticket. When I got my credit card back from the check in staffer I asked, “Is there a gentle cycle for my German honey in your car wash?” I’m guessing she had never been asked something like this before. She said, “this isn’t like home, there is no gentle cycle”. So I got a clean Carrera and $14 hit my credit card account.

November was really quite a busy month for the Roadrunner Region. The month started out with a tour to Moriarity and the New Mexico Soaring Club. Roadrunner member Geoff Aiken is a member of both club organizations and this was a great way to combine both his passions and educate us car club folks at the same time. It was a great day for a tour, but not a great day for soaring. Many club members had intended to take a discounted ride in one of the soaring “ships” but the wind kept everyone grounded.

Those blustery winds didn’t stop the Roadrunner autocross group from blasting out the final two Die Serie racing days. From my perspective the DS had a very successful 2018. Many drivers participated in the newly created Novice, Intermediate and Advanced groups. The enthusiasm of the event planners and volunteers made for many drivers to come back for several races rather than just try it once.

Three Roadrunners made pilgrimages to Porsche sacred places this fall. Vance and Margo Bass and Marc Schwartz made separate visits to the Pedersen Automotive Museum’s 70th Anniversary Porsche exhibit in Los Angeles. Many original vehicles from the early days of Porsche were on display. They were joined by many limited production and race cars that are rarely seen outside the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. Vance and Marc both supplied pictures to go along with Vance’s article in this months Ramblings.

I coaxed Phil Ganderton into penning a story about his tour out to Rennsport VI in California. The usual story about an experience like this focuses on the events on site. Phil’s story colorfully describes the tour from the Duke city out to the Monterey Peninsula. Thanks Phil and Vance and Marc for your words and photos.

This issue puts 2018 to bed for Roadrunner Region Ramblings. Time does fly by. 2019 promises to be an exciting year for Porsche and the Roadrunner Region. The Ramblings “staff” will bring it all to you every month. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

November Meet & GreetStory by Marsha MenNe, Photos by Ann Mulhern

For our first time ever visit to the Fr8 (Freight) House in Bernalillo, fifty club members (many of them new to the club) met for another fun evening of beverages, food, and great craic (Irish term for a great time!). Seated on an elevated portion of the restaurant, our laughter and Porsche demeanor were often entertaining to the other customers in the restaurant. The Fr8 House features many of the local micro-brewery offerings and I think we made a strong group effort to sample as many as possible.

Since President Vance was “under the weather”, VP George took his duties and introduced several new members. New member Jan Gilmore brought his two sons…with one of them pulling the winning ticket for our 50/50 charity drawing. It took a little while, but we finally got Santa Fe

member Rob Ryan to realize he was the winner! I guess it was worth the drive from Santa Fe that night for sure!

As Marion and Andy Simon were leaving, Marion informed me they were celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary on the same day as the M & G. So, a belated very Happy Anniversary to the Simons from your Porsche family.

Willard and I send good wishes to all our Roadrunner Region friends as we look forward to more fun-filled Meet & Greets in 2019.

Thanks,

Marsha

Zone 9 Rep

Your Mid-Term IncumbentBeing a zone rep for PCA is a “2+2” assignment. Two years for the first term, and a second two years unless you hang up the keys, or the Executive Council back at PCA headquarters hears that you really messed up. Former zone reps that I meet regularly remind me that it is the most rewarding National Staff “job” in PCA. I totally agree. The reason for even bringing up this milestone, is that as I crest the mid-term hill, it is worth mentioning that in a short 18 months we will start looking for the next Zone 9 representative. The process will involve phone interviews with, at minimum, the President and Vice-President of PCA (Tom Gorsuch and Cindy Jacisin). They will also be looking for input from me, as well. Preference has typically been given to past region Presidents. And this is not limited to “current” presidents. So if you are a past-president, missing the action, consider throwing your name in the mix when the time comes. There are at least of couple dozen of you reading this, so think about it. It is also not always true that only former region Presidents are selected. So if you have been an active leader with multiple roles on your region board, and have “seen it all” over the years, you should also consider putting your name in the mix.I meet lots of members in regions who find that the “job” of a zone rep for PCA is a bit of a mystery. That’s completely understandable. PCA has 14 zones- one zone rep for each. Our zone 9 covers seven regions that stretch from the Idaho to the Mexico border, and cover all of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, plus the southern parts of Wyoming and the western parts of Texas. For most club members, the zone rep is seen only occasionally at a social, DE, autocross, or tour in your region. However, the invisible part of the “job” is behind the scenes. Our primary role is to act as a liaison between your region’s leadership and the National

Office. Equally important is the expectation that we act as a resource for region Presidents to provide training, share best practices, help as needed with bylaws, elections, national policies, raise concerns to national, and support planning and succession processes as requested. We are expected to travel, and are re-imbursed for attending a minimum of one member event per year in each region. I personally strive for two events, and am pleased to say that the National Office supports my travel plan to allow this to happen. The reason for starting now to ask you all to think about a future as a zone rep, is that we had only two candidates at the time that I applied for the role. In my case, I had only been region president for 50% of my elected term, which caused some disruption here in the Intermountain region at the time. So to hopefully build a deep enough bench when my term is up, and to allow a smooth transition at that time, I’m reaching out EARLY, in order to invite levels of interest and offering to share any/ all information needed for potential candidates to make an informed decision. If you have ANY inclination to become a zone rep for PCA in the future (2020, 2024, 2028), I would LOVE TO hear from you personally some time in 2019. Simply email me at [email protected]. From there we can set up some phone time and perhaps arrange an individual meeting for a de-mystifying Q&A session during one of my trips to your region in the coming year.

Happy Holidays to All!!!

Signing off for 2018,Rich SandersZone 9 Rep.

Rennsport Reunion VI There and Back

Story by Phil Ganderton

There’s been a lot of coverage of Rennsport Reunion VI (RRVI), held for the third time at Laguna Seca Raceway east of Monterey, California at the end of September this year. This is not another recap of the event. This is a story of traveling to, and from, RRVI.The previous west coast Rennsports were held in 2011 and 2015, with RRVI returning to the original three-year gap between events. (The first three were held on the east coast in 2001, 2004, 2007).Preparation for RRVI began among PCA Roadrunners almost a year before the event, when dates were announced and hotels had to be booked. Much like Monterey Car Week, Rennsport Reunion takes over the Monterey Peninsula and accommodations are only found at a premium. Once tickets were purchased we each decided our itinerary which led to the inevitable question “are we going together in a group, and what route shall we take?” Because some people wanted to arrive on Wednesday night a group took the two-day direct route west to Bakersfield, while a few of us chose the longer, more scenic route through Utah, Nevada, and north-central California.

Getting there. It took us three days to get to Laguna Seca Raceway. And we drove pretty fast. Our route took us first through Farmington then briefly into Colorado before stopping at Four Corners Monument. Then it was on to the spectacular canyonlands country of southern Utah. We crossed the Colorado River at Hite then turned toward Capitol Reef National Park and on through Grand Staircase – Escalante National

Park. There ended Day One, and we’d put 570 miles behind us! There is absolutely no doubt this route passed through some of the most spectacular natural beauty this country has to offer. So many times we said “we must come back through here, and linger a little longer.”Day Two contained the dreaded crossing of Nevada, but before that we drove through Bryce Canyon and the Dixie National Forest. Having started the day in the forest, the remainder was spent out in the open and mostly barren lands of central Nevada, traversing on the Extraterrestrial Highway. The end of the day saw us in California and standing on the shores of surreal Mono Lake. The day had certainly been “out of this world”!The last day of our westward journey started in spectacular fashion as we turned into Yosemite National Park at Bridgeport where we encountered barely a handful of cars in the 80 miles it took to cross the Sierra Nevadas. We found a nice road on which to cross the central valley and arrived at our AirBnB in Carmel Valley at mid-afternoon, there completing the 1450 miles drive to RRVI. The day ended by meeting our fellow Roadrunners at the Baja Cantina, a meal that has become a regular ritual whenever attending an event in Monterey.

Being there.Rennsport Reunion VI was the largest of the six events to date, with a record 81,000 attending. Despite the large numbers it never felt crowded, and the vendors, displays, race cars, exhibition cars, drivers, celebrities, and spectator cars combined to produce a total Porsche overload.

Returning Home. The return from such a great adventure is always a little less enjoyment and a little more expedience. The desire to get home quickly and safely meant mainly driving on Interstates. We split the 1100 mile return trip in two, with an overnight in Kingman, AZ. But a fast, straight route didn’t mean we had to forego all driving pleasure, and the first day included an awesome traverse of Highway 198 into Coalinga in central California. This is a must-drive road from now on! But, as expected, it was followed by the inevitable hours spent on Interstate 5 to Bakersfield and then across the desert to Barstow, then Needles, and finally Kingman. The only thing breaking the monotony of the drive was a huge thunderstorm in the Mojave Desert that forced even the 18-wheelers to slow down.

The last day of the trip was familiar territory and we spent most of it in heavy rain. Of course, the conditions improved as we approached Albuquerque and we ended the drive as we had started it—in beautiful sunny conditions. Where the next Rennsport Reunion will be held is not known yet, but the record crowds in Monterey must surely tempt the organizers to return, once again, to Laguna Seca. Our Porsche friends on the east coast must be hoping for a return of the event at a closer track. And some people are talking of splitting the difference and having it at Circuit of the Americas, which would be almost local for us Roadrunners. Wherever it is in 2021, Roadrunners will be in attendance, that’s for sure!

2019 ROADRUNNER PLANNING MEETINGTUESDAY DECEMBER 11, 2018 6:00PM

Got an idea for a Roadrunner event next year? Come to the 2019 Planning meeting to get it on the calendar.

Roadrunner Region always interested in new event ideas.Don’t be shy.

FOUR SEASONS CLEANING - PIZZA AND DRINKS WILL BE SERVED

Leader of the Porsche PackPerhaps the most enjoyable experience of owning a Porsche is driving it on the open road. We have lots of open roads here in New Mexico. What the Roadrunner Region needs is more drive

out Leaders to take us there. Leading a drive out is not flat six engine science. It’s easy but there are some rules to follow. Our region tourmeister, Willard MenNe is here to help you every step of the journey. Willard was the tour chair for the Treffen held here in the spring. He has experience

with insurance, reservations at attractions, generating maps, and the PCA paperwork required. We have lots of members who have visited many cool places in New Mexico and the surrounding

states. If you’ve been someplace that you’d like to share with the Roadrunners drop Willard a line. Bring your ideas and you’ll have a line of Porsches ready to follow.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE PETERSENArticle by Vance Bass, photos Vance Bass and Marc Schwartz

I didn’t want a black car. I knew how hard they are to keep clean and dreaded the constant chore of tending the precious appearance of my daily driver. But a black 911 is what I found, so it’s what we drive. I’m not one of those people who names their cars, but this one acquired a name after our recent 2,968-mile trip to California: “Dirty Bird”. You can not believe how much grime that car acquired, and how fast. Luckily, I had waxed it heavily before we left, and it wasn’t really to hard to clean off the layers of road grime and bug guts. But man, was that an ugly car for a couple of weeks. Our trip took us to visit family members in Flagstaff and Las Vegas, then it was on to Los Angeles to hear the LA Philharmonic and, the real reason for the trip, to see “The Porsche Effect” at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Additional dirt was collected on the Pacific Coast Highway to Carmel-by-the-Sea, to Sacramento to visit the spectacular California State Railroad Museum, then home through the Central Valley, with a detour to Sedona. It was a fantastic trip, and surprisingly easy to clean the dirt from, all things considered. If you’ve been ignoring the hype this year, it’s Porsche’s 70th anniversary, and the Petersen Museum is running an exhibit of some of their crowning achievements in observance of it. And you should know that you can still see the exhibit through February of 2019. If the weather gets unpleasant in the Roadrunner Region, this would be a great way to escape to a warmer climate for a while, and see some fantastic cars, too.The Petersen has amassed an incredible collection of cars and related materials from their own collection, as well as from private collectors and the Porsche company’s archives and museum. You want to see the first production Porsche, straight from Gmund via the Stuttgart museum? It’s there, as are prototypes of cars like the Carrera GT or the four-door 928.

Race cars? Everything from the 550 Spyder to the 919 Le Mans winner. A “Continental” cabrio, Steve McQueen’s 356 Speedster, a GT1, a 959, a PCA 50th anniversary 911 – just about every significant Porsche you can imagine is on display. In summary, clear your calendar for some weekend between now and February and be sure to see this exhibit. You really do not want to miss it.

You probably saw the article about the show in the Panorama 732. You may not have noticed the tiny photo showing a collection of 19 PCA grill badges in a display case. When you’re standing in front of the case, though, what jumps out is that the Roadrunner Region’s badge was one of the ones selected for the show. They don’t explain how they chose those badges, but I’d like to think that our region’s stellar reputation has something to do with it.As a final note, Steve McQueen’s first Porsche was that 356 Speedster. It was black. If it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me.

Roadrunners Explore SoaringArticle and Photos by Geoff Aiken

It was one of those so near and so far drive outs. A short drive along old Route 66 to Moriarty. Some of us may have known that the Moriarty Airport, home of the Albuquerque Soaring Club (ASC) was a world class soaring facility. No one was prepared for the experience of seeing the history of soaring in the US Southwest Soaring Museum. The museum is home to around 50 sailplanes on display. A guided tour introduced us to the history of soaring in New Mexico. We were told about George Applebay, a sailplane designer who established the museum, and legendary pilot/instructor Alcide Santilli, whose original private pilot’s license on display was signed by Orville Wright. Then it was on to the ASC’s hangar where Club President, host and

Roadrunner member (PCA member since 1998, instructor and former professional race driver) Geoff Aiken talked about the soaring “ships” that are housed there. Lastly, the Roadrunner group had lunch at the New Mexico Lobo Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Along with fresh grilled burgers and sides in the wing’s shop were two WWII and Korean War airplane trainers that were being restored by the volunteers of the club. It was a great opportunity to hear about the restoration efforts and talk with the men and women who bring history to life with these airplanes. First time tour organizer Geoff Aiken did a great job organizing the tour. Thanks also to Katrina Arndt for her attention to details.
