where the MZ’s will beracing on the 300 circuit. This layout is just shy of3 miles which is thelongest on the racing cal-endar this year. TheBentley Straight is infact the old east to westrun way. You must go back to May 2017 for thelast time the MZ’s were here on the 300 circuit. Chris Rogers is the lap record holder with a timeof 2:20.940. Rogers set the lap record on a cloudydry day on 18th September 2016. Also, former MZchampion Dean Stimpson made a return to the MZrace meeting on Barry Greens old bike. Stimpsonlead that race for the first 3 laps with Rogers lead-ing the remainder of the race and getting his recordon the final lap. During that same final lap, PeteWoodall, chasing hard, got the fastest 1st sectortime of the entire weekend. However, he ran intotrouble during the final sector of that lap becausehis sector time was unusually off the pace and hewas on for a 2:19 lap time. For those interested inthe stats, the best sector times during that race were1:34.371 (Woodall) and 45.941 (Rogers); With anideal lap time of 2:20.312. At the last MZ meeting lap times were not quiteso good. During that meeting Greg Wright got thefastest lap with a 2:24.074 in cloudy dry condi-tions. The best sector times for that race meetingwere 1:35.538 (Kent) and 47.408 (Wright). Withan ideal lap time of 2:22.946. Should we have rainfor the weekend, the most recent lap time in the weton the 300 circuit was on 17 September 2016where Stimpson did a lap in 2:35.056. Chris Kenttypically rides well at Snetterton where he got his

first race win back in 2015.For Andrew Wales this is his home circuitliving only 30 miles away. This is a bit of abit of boggie track for Andrew but he hasbeen doing his homework watching onboardfootage and it might just all come togetherfor him for this meeting. Andrew got hisvery first race win here at Snetterton in 2013.He is long overdue a win here. For this round, former MZ champion Garry

Samett makes a return after missing the previousround at Donnington. Garry brings with himupgraded rear suspension, so he may be one towatch out for. Chris Pettet makes a welcomereturn to the grid. Chris is one of the friendliestMZ’ers in the paddock. You can rely on Chris tolend a helping hand or some parts to the other MZriders. He also brings the Club BBQ and is a realgent.Let’s hope John Ashmead has better luck than hedid at Donnington. John had a big off atDonnington on Saturday’s 2nd race on the fastMcLean’s corner. His bike barrel rolled and need-ed a lot of work to get going again, with both rearsets and both handlebars needing attention. Hehad rotten luck during Sunday mornings practicebecause he was knocked off by a Ninja rider.Consequently, John did not make it out for firstrace on Sunday morning. He also had the expenseof getting his air bag suite recharged which isabout £300.Liam Newman is riding well now he is gettingregular racing. With his pedigree of riding minimoto’s and his light weight, it could mean anotherpodium this weekend for the promising youngrider. Gary Howlett should have solved his minor

engine niggles for this round, Snetterton is a fast

Welcome to Snetterton

circuit with long straights which has suited Gary’sstrong engine in the past. This year’s Tony Holmshaw factory rider, AlexMann must have been delighted with the last raceat Donny. He led that race for the first 4 laps keep-ing Chris Kent honest. One to watch out for atSnetterton, he is due a podium soon. RusselTurner times were really improving atDonnington he was 6 seconds a lap faster than histime in the previous year and justified his rider ofthe meeting award. Unfortunately Russel cannotmake this round as he will in the Isle of Manwatching the TT.Gary Williams is now a regular this year, his bikecolours are of his favourite football team WestHam and in the style of the teams 80’s football kit. Mark Vincents is also a regular, his bike is yellowwhich some other MZ riders consider controver-sial. Mark is one of the more laid back riders, wearing sun glasses whilst racing. Mark is teamedup with Rob Dessoy in the team championshipand that team can only go in one direction nowand that’s up in the team championship table. Richard Fayers makes a return to the MZ gridwhich is his local track, his bike is alway wellturned out and he normally goes well, expect himto lead the the middle of the pack, especiallyaround Corams. It’s good to see Richard back forthis round who would always like to race more.Potential sponsors should consider speaking toRichard in the first instance.

Kevin Sabbarton will swap his Ninja for an MZat this round. Kev is a former MZ rider and he willbe on Pat the Professors bike which has lightweight wheel. He is very likely to go faster on hisMZ than his Ninja around this track. Can Kev canmix it up with the likes of Gary Williams andMark Vincent? It should be an interesting battlethere. Finally a warm welcome to Michael Wilby whomakes his first race appearance on an MZ.Michael will be running number 566 and if mysources are correct he was showing rider on R1’sand 1000RR’s how to carry corner speed on hisACU test day earlier this year. Could be anotherrider who surprises the more established MZ’ersUnfortunately, there will be no one out on therenter bikes this weekend, which are the best funyou can have with your cloths on.

A date for your diary, the Prescott Bike festivalis on the 15th and 16th June. This is a familyfriendly bike festival. There will be a hill climbevent and there will be an MZ presence promotingthe club. As well as lots of bikes to look at.

Good luck to all the riders in the MZ class.

In the next meetings mag there will be more onthe Prescott Bike festival, plus the write ups from2 riders (Gary Howlett and Andrew Wales).

This meeting’s doppelgängers are below. Can you guess the tricky ones? Rob

for a slipstream down thestraight, Rob missed the apexand ran wide, I got sucked inand went with him, having tobrake sharply to avoid him andvery nearly running off into thedirt. By the time I’d got myselfsorted out I’d lost loads ofmomentum and the leaderswere in the distance, and I thenhad to deal with John Ashmeadshowing me a wheel on thestraight. With a clear trackahead I managed to build a gapover John, who was riding real-ly well, and came home in 5thplace. Congrats to Rob for tak-ing the win ahead of Chris Rand Pete!

RACE 2For Race 2, I changed back to theBVF carb as I felt the Mikuniwasn’t quite right, despite settingthe fastest lap in the first race. Igot a good start and was onlybeaten to the first corner by Rob‘Rocketship’ Dessoy, seeminglyon a mission. Flat out downCraner Curves is always great funespecially when it’s wheel towheel! I thought I had a run atRob into MacCleans but had toshut off and this let Pete past onthe inside. Pete got past Rob intoCoppice and me and Chris R alsowent by on the exit. I got the bestof the slipstream and took thelead into the chicane to lead the

first lap with the first 6riders only a secondapart! Surprisingly thereweren’t many positionchanges on lap 2 and Iled across the line again.Lap 3, I was passed byPete and Rob, I can’tremember where but Iremember thinking thatthe bike felt better thanin the first race so I wasconfident of staying inthe fight this time. Forthe next 2 laps I stayedin 3rd despite swapping

So, after 3 years of study, 4solid weeks of revision (apartfrom the Cadwell races), 4 daysof exams and having to rideback from Bangor on Fridayevening I figured I was duesome relaxation,….…… lets gobike racing at Donington Parkthen, obviously!

RACE 1I like the National circuit so wasfeeling keen to get to grips with itagain. I had a front row start, asper championship positions, andgot a decent getaway slotting intosecond behind Rob I think. To befair it could’ve been anyone. Ican’t remember a lot of detail.Hellfire, it was a busy race! I wasbehind Rob at the end of the firstlap, then back in 4th after the sec-ond and 5th after lap 3 and 4,back up to 4th for lap 5. I know Iwasn’t always in the same posi-tion and there was plenty of slip-streaming and out-braking goingon almost everywhere. I felt thebike wasn’t pulling very well in4th gear up the hill after the oldhairpin and I was getting passedup there more than normal so wastrying everything I could to stayin the battle at the front. Heading into Coppice on Rob’sback wheel, trying to get in place

position a few times and wasright on the back of the groupcoming down the straight. Icaught a humungous slipstreamand went from 4th at Coppice tothe lead in the chicane. Then Iwent a bit deep and couldn’tfind a gear, lost all the momen-tum and dropped back into theclutches of Taff and Manny,

who were involved in their ownsquabble a couple of secondsback. At the first corner of thelast lap I was back in 6th, butdetermined to fight to the line. The 3 of us caught a back-mark-er on Craner Curves and Taffdived inside whilst Manny hesi-tated. I took advantage andslung it round the outside to take5th place. Up into MacCleansanother back-marker and a gooddrive helped me slip up into 4thbut Taff got a better run and

took me back into Coppice. Thisgave me a slipstream which I usedto out-brake him into the chicaneand come home in 4th place, slightly miffed at not being nearerthe front but glad not to be furtherback. Well done to the front 3,Chris R, Rob and Pete. Check out the videos from Roband Taff on utube for all the action

and some of the closest racing youwill see anywhere! In the last raceof the weekend there were 6 of usvying for the lead! The photos areincredible and the onboard vidsare breathtaking. If this isn’t thebest sort of advert for racing MZ’sI don’t know what is! Well done to the race winners,

Rob, Chris R And Pete, all therookies who bravely completedtheir first meetings and even morebravely are coming back formore!! and to the riders that

improved their performances, especially Russ, John and Alex, who rode out of his skin in thefinal race to lead the first 4 laps!(Sorry for chucking my mud-guard at you down CranerCurves – quite possibly theworst moment for it to come off– glad you stayed upright!)

A great weekends race action, the weather stayed dry and Ididn’t fall off so all in all a goodmeeting! Cheers to ChrisRogers for lending me some

space in his awning for theweekend and making me feelbetter by crashing, despitebeing told not to by Ashleigh.Roll on Snett!

RACE 1

Sunday

After what was a fast andfurious Saturday it was anearly start Sunday morningbeing 1st race out. Sadlyafter crashing Saturday race2 following a superb race 1Saturday John Ashmead gottaken out in free practicesand missed race 1 Sunday.

Race 1Start of race 1 was eventfulwith Chris Kent’s high com-pression engine sending hisspark plug skywards leavinghim stranded but thankfullysafe on the start line. Starting5th I stayed 5th in to the 1st cor-ner thanks to Liam “the young-ster” Newman who got a greatstart from the 3rd row to befourth in to the 1st corner fol-lowing Pete “the teeth” Woodallwith Chris “lightning” Rogers insecond Rob “the rocket”Dessoy, me in 5th.The 1st lap consisted of followthe leader until coppice and theDunlop straight where I rodepast Liam who drafted me backdown the straight while Rob,Chris and Pete went in toRoberts chicane 3 abreast withRob out braking himself givingChris and Pete a gap to get awayand have a fast 2 way battle atthe front up until Chris’s cop-pice exit on the last lap.Liam drafted Rob down the

start straight and then promptlyout braking himself into redgateleaving Rob and I to pass himdown crainer’s and start ourrace long battle for the eventual2nd and 3rd. It was a great racewith positions being tradedevery lap, the end of the racewas decided by being caught bythe blue haze second group whosplit Rob and I with half a lap togo and as they say: the rest ishistory.

to the straight I passed Chris Rand Pete with Chris K comingback past in to Roberts, Alexover the line 1st Liam Chris Kfollowed by me Chris R andPete.Chris K slipstreamed Liamdown the start straight and outbraked him in to redgate forcingLiam wide allowing me to getthe run on Liam down the crain-er’s setting of after Alex.Running through the old hairpinI used every bit of track thegreen concrete and even somedirt losing time going up thehill, but Chris got past Alex in toMaclean’s and Alex re passedinto Coppice allowing me tocatch back up.The next lap followed the samepattern except Chris held thelead through coppice Alex draft-ed Chris into Roberts chicaneand lead down the crainer’swhere Chris snuck up the insidethrough the left leaving Alex torun tight through the old hairpinand McLean’s trying to runround the outside I ran wide andlet Pete through, Alex thendrafted Chris again in toRoberts.Pete managed a double overtakeon Chris and Alex into redgate

TaffWales

Race 2Starting 3rd for race 2 I got aterrible start ending up 7th head-ing down the crainer’s with Alex“the bearded dwarf “ Mann get-ting a amazing start to lead,

Liam 2nd , Chris R 3rd Pete 4thGary “the howzer” Howlet 5thChris “ The Graduate” Kent6th. Rob “The reports choice”Dessoy had a shocker of a start, due to gear selection issuesbetween 1st and 2nd but clawedhis way back to a great race win.Down Crainer’s Chris K and Itook Gary round the outside ofthe left, Gary needed to carrymore speed, Chris was heldtight by Pete through McLean’sallowing me to run round theout side up to coppice, it was adrafting game down to Robertschicane carrying more speed on

Henry Wood What a great weekends racing. Some realy close finishes. Well done to all thewinners and a very well done to the new riders. Also well done to the 100club winner pick-ing up £51pounds. Total ticket sales £102pounds. Thanks every one that bought tickets.See you at Snett

Scot ChristieThank you for the kindness and generosity everyone showedthis weekend. The weekend was full of highs and a few

lows,

but all in all i had a fantastic time and made some great

friends on my journey into racing. Thank you all again for your

support, I would have never have completed it with out you, it

was very much appreciated. See you all again at Brands. Oh

and by the way if anyone wants their front caliper checking for

tightness, then I'm not the person to ask.

Murray SmokerNot sure I got chance tosay bye e to all of ya, justwant to say thanks for allthe support to all of youthrough the weekend.See you all very soon forsome more zed action

as Chris was overtaking Alexrunning a bit wide, Rob outbreaked me into redgate and weall head off down crainers pass-ing Chris K mudguard that hadflown off the lap before but wasclear by the next time round.Through McLean’s Chris Ktakes Alex, Rob runs wide ChrisR takes me, through coppice Robgets under Alex and we all tryand find the best draft down thestraight, getting a double draftfrom Alex and Chris R I manageto get up the inside into Robertsright behind Chris K And Rob.A slow run through Roberts

chicane cost me 2 places to Alexand a dive bombing Chris R in toredgate, a fast run through theold hairpin allowed me to get upthe inside of Alex throughStarkey’s and run up to Chris R,Alex comes back past intoRobert’s and lost a few bikelengths which I manged to makeup through the rest of the lap andthanks to Murray Smoker (wel-come To MZ racing) as welapped him which also lets Alexback past Chris R. All 4 of usmanage to safely get past ScottChristie (welcome To MZ rac-ing) in to Robert’s. Rob gapsChris K Setting off after Peteleaving 4 of us to fight for 3rd.As the Blue haze front runners

start to come through Chris Rand I get a run on Alex throughthe crainer’s and are tight onChris K through the old hairpinand pass him up the hill.Entering coppice we lap IanJames (great to see you back) Imange to tow Chris R down thestraight but he out breaks me into

see’s us catch Mark “theBanana” Vincent again on theentrance to Coppice but like Ianhe leaves space for us both to getthrough. Same run down theDunlop straight but I manage tohold Chris R through the chi-cane. On to the last lap Chris RDrags me to Redgate, a fast run

down through the old hairpinallows me to run up the insidethrough the left, but Chris R man-ages to hold round the outside forthe inside into Mclean’s.On the run down the Dunlopstraight Chris goes defensiveAlex gets the to on the approachwe are 3 wide A late brakingmove means I enter the chicane atthe front of the group but have nomomentum so by the line I havegone from 3rd to 6th gutted.

It has to have been one of thebest weekends racing, well doneto all podium finishers. A specialmention for the 3 new front run-ners Alex Mann, Liam Newmanand John Ashmead. A thorough-ly deserved Man of the meetingfor Russell Turner.

My burning ambitionto race motorcycles, started when I wasabout 13 years old.Which I find hard tobelieve is now 40years ago.A friend of my broth-er raced a Baltaco 350TSS in the classicmotorcycle racingclub, and one week-end he was racing aSnetterton and ask if Iwould like to comeand watch. I was

hooked from the that point on and determinedto race one day.I tended to tag along to all the races after thatweekend fetching and carrying, mainly atBrands. When I started my engineering appren-ticeship in 1982, I became a key member of thepit team and spent most of my teenage yearseither fixing the bike or helping in the pits, Iloved it but it never satisfied that itch.Eventually once I had saved enough money,we built a second bike that I was going to race. But as you all know building the bike is not theend of the expenses and I had drained my potdry just getting the bike ready. Well we tookthe bike to Mallory park for a track day and Iwas told to build up speed gradually and not topush the engine too hard as it was all freshlybuilt. It was all going well until I got passed goingaround Gerards and the red mist came downand I opened her up and ZZZZIP the engineseized and high sided me and found myselfgoing down the track on my back side thinkingwill I stop? Well the bike was not too badlydamaged but needed a lot of money spent on itagain, and my helmet needed replacing. I hadno money and suddenly i realised my ambitionout stripped my bank account.I just stuck to helping in the pits, frustratedand annoyed. Eventually my friend left

England to live in America. I had settleddown and started a family, but vowed togive it a go again one day. Then one dayonly a few years go I was sat watchingHenry Cole on TV and he did the segmentof him doing the race experience withBMZRC. That was my light bulb momentand since then i have been working slowlyto the point when the children are fairly self-sufficient.But as always something else comes alongand it never seemed right time to do it, untilNew years eve 2018 I was sat with Mandy(my wife) at a party and it came up in theconversation that is there anything I wantedto do in 2019? Well I couldn't miss anopportunity like that. So I said, I have been

thinking about buying a race bike doingsome track days, see if I was quick enoughand then in 2020 join BMZRC. You couldhave knocked me down with a feather, notsure if it was the alcohol, but Mandy said"DO IT", I didn't need to be told twice, Ihave learned over the last 25 years never toargue with my wife!!! I was straight on myphone and messaging Jerry Frost and mak-ing him and offer on his bike. Within a weekI had collected the bike and planning myfirst trackday. It is all a bit of a blur since then, because Icame to the Open day at Brands, one minuteI was explaining my plan of joining the clubin 2020 to Taff, Chris Rogers, Chris Watsonand Dave, and the next thing I had signed upfor the Race licence day and joined theclub????

From then on it has been a privilege to beassociated to such friendly club, now I haveachieved that burning ambition to race amotorcycle in a competitive race, at one ofmy favourite tracks, I just have raised myambition to now one day being on the podi-um!!

Paul

Mandy said “DO IT”
