The objective of this document is to trace the roots of Thomas Penilton back to slavery.

In 1880, Easter Pennington (Now Easter McDonald –her assumed maiden name) is now listed as head of household. She is listed as “widowed”. She continued to live in Hudsonville, Marshall County, MS at this time. Apparently, sometime in the 1880’s Henry, a very young man, met an untimely death. After 1870 he added additional children Tom Pennington, Ola Pennington and Elizabeth Pennington. Olivia is still listed in 1880, but Robert Pennington is missing above, but was found living with another family. He is 15 at this time, the family he lived with was white, it is assumed he was living and working this family to help support his mother and the other kids since his father is now gone..

1910 Census

In 1910, Tom Pennington can be found on the same census page as Ola Pennington/Bailey (Tom Penningtons sister) living in close quarters with this family. A Separate document traces the heritage of his grandson Ola Pennington/Bailey documents her story. This shows that Tom Pennington and his sister remained close through their entire life. Thomas Bailey, his wife Ola (Pennington) Bailey and family can be found near the top of the image. Thomas Pennington and family can be found near the bottom. Tom Pennington also has a daughter named Ola he named after his sister. She is shown as a part of his family at 6 years old.

In 1910, Thomas Pennington was with his wife Charlotte living In Early Grove/Slayden/Mount Pleasant, Marshall, MS Beat 2.

Listed here are Thomas’s children George, Robert, Tennessee (Tenny), Anna, Willie, Ola, and Lizzy.

Living with them is Annie Jackson (not sure who she is; maybe Charlottes mother, Annie appears to be named after her.).

It appears that Robert took his name after his Thomas’s brother (Oldest male to Henry and Easter).

Lizzie appears to have taken her name from Elizabeth, Thomas’s youngest sister

Ola appears to have taken her name from Ola Pennington/Bailey (Thomsas’s sister and my great grandmother)

In 1917, Robert Penilton (Pennington) registered for the draft during World war 1.

He was shown to be living near Lamar, MS (Marshall County) and born in nearby Early Grove, MS. He was shown to be married.

A couple of things to note: During the World War 1 draft, all men in the United States were required to register for the draft. Robert registered with the information on this card. Note the lower left cut corner, this let the military know right away before looking at the card that you were black. This was done to the cards of all black men.

Robert Penilton could not write and likely not read (note the signature block). Someone else signed the card for him, he was only required to provide “his mark” as shown.

This is the first known document found where the Penilton name was used.

In 1917, George Henry Penilton (Pennington) registered for the draft during World war 1. (I assume the name middle name Henry came from his grandfather)

He was shown to be living near Lamar, MS (Marshall County) and born in nearby Early Grove, MS.

Note his birthday of 7/4/1893.

Confusion over name spelling

(2) cards show up for George Henry for the WW1 draft. (This second card (which must have been yet another mistake, shows his name to be George Henry Pendleton, born of 7/4/1893.

It is safe to say, that this is where the variations in spelling of the surname may have been introduced (or was it 5 years earlier when his grandmother married Nelson Isom in 1881?), since in many cases, we could not read or write, or we chose not to identify with the name born to us.

The names provided to him from 1910 and 1920. Tom Penilton also named his son after his grandfather, Robert (shown on this page). They are still living in the same area of Marshall county. Thomas also confirmed he knew my great grandfather, Thomas Bailey, he was not aware that Thomas Bailey was actually his uncle, married to Ola.

Below Thomas, you will see George married to Josie. They have a daughter (can’t be read at this time) and a son Jessie. George later moved the family to the Orange Mound area in Memphis. George later returned to Marshall county where he died in 1984.

6/23/08 I spoke with Marie Penilton (Jessie Penilton’s widow). Marie Penilton is currently residing in Chicago, IL. Jessie passed away in Chicago in 1979. She stated that she didn't know any of the other Peniltons in Marshall county today, but knew George (her father in law), Anna Penilton, Willie and Ola (Tom Penilton’s Sr daughter) She stated that her husband Jessie has documents from when he was a child, using the name Pennington, and that she was aware of the name change. She is 82 years old at this time. Most of her kids now live in Washington State.

Thomas Penilton (Pennington) Heritage

During my research for my grandmother Fannie Bailey (Daughter of Thomas Bailey Sr. and Ola Bailey-Pennington I was able to trace her family back to Henry and Easter Pennington in 1870.

I decided to find out what happened to the Pennington's in Marshall county and for some strange reason they just “disappeared” I assumed they left the area in a hurry and didn't want to be found.

While researching (Fannie Bailey) my grandmothers brother (Thomas Bailey Jr.), I discovered something quite odd. Thomas Bailey Jr. died in 1942, and his mothers maiden name was listed as Penilton not Pennington on his death certificate. I just assumed it was a mistype, until I saw the name Penilton on the 1930 Census

The name Change to Penilton

I went back to investigate, the earliest usage of Penilton I could find was when Roberts name was spelled Robert Penilton when he registered for the draft for World War 1 in about 1917. Fast forward to the 1920 census, the name was Pennington again. Fast forward to 1930 Census the remaining group is Penilton

This branch of Peniltons remain in Marshall county today. Over the years, many have dispersed across the country.

Shown in the 1930 Census, the only remaining Pennington's that remain in Marshall county are white. The Peniltons are shown just above them.

George, Ophelia, Tom and Willie are shown.

A couple of theories,

A mis spell was introduced during the 1917 Drafter registration?

The family wanted the change due to some unfortunate mutual or imposed situation with the white Pennington's in Marshall County?

What happened for sure? We may never know..

The name Change to Penilton

1930 Census

Since the 1930 Census is the most recent and available to me today, I cannot document the Penilton tree as it exist today. I cannot show what happened to the other black Pennington's or other Peniltons.

Thomas Penilton (shown above on the 1930 Census) has been a valuable asset in confirming this information for me, though he knew nothing about a name change.

Regardless of the name, I’ve also connected with distant relatives by tracing my roots back to slavery and forward through today. I’ve already had the once in a lifetime pleasure (if not meet him face to face) meet Thomas Penilton and it certainly speaking to him meant a lot to me for him to take the time to sort some of this out.
