1 Roberts Spark Park Life Outside
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Whether you are a parent, grandparent, child, or neighborhood resident, it’s in our best interest for every one of us to spend more time outside.
Outdoor activity increases fitness levels and builds active, HEALTHY bodies. It increases intelligence in children and decreases obesity for all. Being outside improves distance vision and lowers the chance of nearsightedness. Nature relaxes you and reduces stress. The list of positive benefits goes on….
In Houston, we have an awesome resource right here in the heart of the Village. The Roberts Elementary park is a SPARK park – which means the gates are open most daylight, non-school hours to be a neighborhood park. Thus, it benefits us ALL – no matter your age!
As a neighborhood, we have the opportunity to spark community life by improving our green space. Our improved park would welcome all ages to the outdoors for extended periods: Purchase new playscapes for children – current play structures are 18 years old (10 years of use is recommended) Additional play areas added to meet the needs of our growing community Add developmentally appropriate challenges - currently there is no toddler area; other sensory playscapes will be added for the older children Improve exercise areas –all the paths will be improved and connected, including a new track; drainage and other improvements to the baseball/soccer field Increase relaxing, nature-scapes – garden and tree - shaded sitting areas
This community park will be functional for both children and adults; and will offer plants, trees and landscaping to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye and showcase nature.
The average child now spends the majority of non-school waking hours using a smart phone, computer, television or other electronic devices. Adults spend more time sitting or being non-active than children, so we can all benefit from this neighborhood hub.
Let’s make this the heart of our community − a place to gather, play, exercise, socialize, have parties, and more! Please donate by completing the commitment form to make these desired improvements a reality.
Thank you for your help with this wonderful community project,

We need your help!
Let’s get outside!
Roberts Spark Park Life Outside 2
No matter your age, there are compelling reasons:
Spark Park Life Outside B e n e f i t s
The more time children are outside, the less time they are online, gaming or watching TV.
Schools with environmental education programs score higher on standardized tests in math, reading, writing and listening.
There is a direct correlation between hands-on play and superior problem solving skills.
There is a direct link between screen time and obesity.Play protects children’s emotional development whereas loss of free time and
a hurried lifestyle can contribute to anxiety and depression. On average, children get less than 20 minutes per day of outdoor play. The
average child ages 8-18 spends more than 7.5 hours a day on electronic devices. - Heavy media use is associated with behavior problems and lower grades. - 47% of the heaviest media users had mostly C’s or lower and are more likely to report that they were bored or sad, or that they got into trouble, did not get along well with their parents and were not happy at school.
Exercise – there are 6 pieces of adult size exercise equipment, as well as a track; updating the path on entire property for longer distances
Nature – our flower and vegetable garden is a great place to relax with a good book and enjoy being outside
Nostalgia – the park brings back wonderful memories of your children’s time there
Community – giving back to the next generation of children and your neighborhood children
Gathering space – the space is open for parties and picnics, for children or adults
Tax contribution – any contributions you make are tax deductible
SPARK Park is a non-profit organization that was created in 1983 to create parks in areas that would otherwise not have a community park by utilizing school grounds.

2 A neighborhood hub to connect and play with other children! Reconnect with old friends.
3Improved handicap accessibility around all play areas will make our playground a place for all children.
4New drainage on athletic field with a multi-use children’s sports area will provide a wonderful place for neighbor-hood sports teams to practice.
5All new playground equipment that will activate the sensory needs of all ages of children – toddlers to teenagers!
6 Improved fitness area for kids and adults will encourage healthy lifestyles and outdoor activity.
7Green residential spaces are gathering places where neighbors form social ties that produce stronger, safer neighborhoods and increase property value.
8 Beautification of the neighborhood!
ADULTS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS
The highlight of the new Spark Park is the incredible new playground equip-ment that challenges both physical and mental aspects from 2-14. Through more than 150 hours of direct observation, community requests and detailed research, the newly designed area offers a better layout for supervision and for both group and individual activities.
Why should I contribute to our community park?
