What is Robotics?

The word “robotics” is derived from word Robot.

Robotics is integration of three branches of engineering;

Mechanical, Electrical & Computer Science.

Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation &

application of robots and computer systems for their

control, sensory feedback & information processing.

Laws of robotics

There are basically three laws of Robotics given by science

fiction author Isaac Asimov in his short story “Runaround”

1st law: A robot may not injure a human being or, through

inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2nd law: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings,

except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3rd law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such

protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Requirements of robots

• Chassis

Chassis is a mechanical assembly for making a drive platform for the

wheels. Where you can mount any controller board to drive your bot.

This is just the mechanical chassis, it can use 4 DC geared motors, 1

castor and 4 wheels with rubber rings. We can make different type of

chassis according to our need.

• Motors & Wheels

Motors & wheels are used to drive the bot. There are different types of

motors available. The motors should be selected on the basis of torque

required by the bot. wheels are also available in different shape and sizes

Power supply

Power can be supplied to the bot by following sources :-

•By battery

•By solar panel

•Using A.C. supply

Robotics & engineering

During Engineering studies various Robotics

competitions are held at national & international

levels in which teams of students are tasked

with designing and building a robot to play

against other teams from around the world in a

game-based engineering challenge. These

competitions are held on school basis, college

basis and it can also be adapted as a career

option.

Types of competitions

Robotics is a field born out of the desire to automate. Making things

happen by themselves is

easier said than done. Development of robots involves repeated

planning, trial manufacture, experimentation, analysis, and

improvements. In order to emphasize and import these amongst the

engineering students, several robotic competitions are held around

the world, at institute

level, national level and international level. They are given different

names by different institutes.

• Robotics Olympiads

Robotics Olympiad is a Championship which arises from a vision of building the most rigorous and diverse competition series in Robotics for School students in India. Teams from 10+ cities across the country competes in the city rounds to win the title of “City champions” and progress to the “Grand Finale”. Robotics Olympiad aims at building a stronger Technical expertise amongst the young enthusiasts of today to foster them for bigger innovations in future. Robotics Olympiad also aspires to encourage participation from girls to persuade the field of Technology, especially Robotics. In this pursuit we have taken a step to enhance the same by rewarding girl participant

robocon

Robocon, short for Robotic Contest, is an interesting game - cum -intellectual exercise for budding engineers and their enthusiastic instructors, determined to innovate and create machines for producing desired results. Participation in this activity is an end - to - end competitive experience from concept design of a system of robots programmed to perform according to rules of the game played on a high precision technical Contest Area and to score a victory beating the competitors; all this according to a Theme declared by the Host Country. Robocons organised by Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and its member countries including Doordasrshan of India offer young engineers a platform to innovate and excel in creative thinking. Here, they demonstrate their technical ideas in robotics, as well as establish cross cultural contacts in an environment.

robotryst

Robotryst is an IIT Bombay alumni venture named as Robosapiens

Technologies Pvt. ltd. It organises various career oriented training

programs & projects at selective engineering colleges/universities across

India. This highly competitive world of today demands that students not

only learn but transform ideas into reality. Thus, it's mandatory to impart

practical knowledge apart from academics to the visionaries of tomorrow in

their formative years.

Full throttle

Full throttle is a very exciting robot challenge. In this we have to create

an I.C. engine powered wireless remote controlled machine which race

against opponents on an off road dirt track with many hurdles and

obstacles. This competition shows your knowledge about engineering

behind remote controlled cars and feel the effect of ultimate driving

experience. The event requires racing of your self-built cars on a race

track. Although it may look simple to you but you will face cut-throat

competition, and finally it is the quality of the car and driver ability which

will decide the winner

robowars

In this we have to design a wired or wireless robot which is capable of

fighting with the others robots in the tournament. The main aim is to

immobilise or destroy the opponents bot. There are points fixed for

breaking any part or immobilising the opponents’ bot.

There various measures that should be considered while making robots for

RoboWars. They are:-

• Dimensions of bot

• Weight of bot

• Type of weapon installed.

• Amount of power used.

weapons

The most important part of any robowars is the weapons installed in the

bot weapons can be of different type. The various weapons available are:-

• Cutter

• Hammer

• Lifter

• Pneumatic

• Axe

• We can also use the combinations of it.
