(Dalley 1981) Don Wilson adds, “We did ‘Surfing’ because it was the sign of the times, not because we were a surf group. ‘The Ventures in Space’ album was also a sign of the times. We had to be flexible with our sound.” (Dalley 1981) Some Ventures fans feel that this particular piece shows that in 1964 the Ventures were years ahead of their time in space rock. They obviously had access to a copy of the sheet music of the theme from the detective movie, "The Bat" (1958) (see under Film Music – Mystery). As recorded for the movie by Alvino Rey & his orchestra, the opening whines on guitar by the precursor Rey were copied by the Ventures but the brass ensemble of the original is replaced by their very different arrangement for electric guitars. In this number certain whining, siren-like sustained notes on steel guitar joined to a steady beat and chattering crash cymbal provide the backup to the hard, compulsive chords on lead guitar. The resulting weird overall effect is in perfect keeping with the popular notion of the bat as a frightening creature. A selection from this piece was included in the NSS Audio-Visual Aids program, "Caves on Phonograph Records" which I had first presented at the 1967 NSS Convention held in Huntsville and Birmingham, Alabama. Recordings of the show's theme music by its composer Neal Hefti (got to the Top 35) and by the Marketts (Top 20) both become top 40 hits. This theme was to be recorded by over 11 more artists: Jan and Dean, Nelson Riddle, The Surfaris, The Ventures, Link Wray, etc.. This Marketts piece uses a repetitive ringing riff overlaid with menacing sax.

THE CAVE (Part I & II) Rock ‘n’ Roll – Spoken Word – Horror – Instrumental

Comp: Steven HOWARD Rts: Pattern Music Inc. (ASCAP)

Perf: Gary "Spider" WEBB Gary Webb (drums) (with guitar & bass guitar) Prod. Co: Bamboo Records; Chicago, IL Matrix: BSN-149 & 150 Time: (Sd 1) 2:25 & (Sd 2) 2:28 Label: Bamboo 504

(Regular Stock label – Black & Promo label – Red label) Spec: 7" 45rpm (Sides 1 & 2) Notes: A weird anomaly in two parts consisting of a drum and guitar instrumental animated by intermittent spoken exchanges between a teenage couple who are lost in a cave without any light. It begins with the boyfriend explaining – One dark and rainy night my girl and I got lost in a cave.

I call to her and she calls to me. But we're still lost in the cave. Julie, Julie, Julie!!

His girlfriend’s answering cries echo in the cave – Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy?

Then the guitar plays eerie reverbing chords from a familiar rock instrumental (possibly "Walk Don't Run"). and he calls out again – Where are you, Julie, I can't see you?

She yells – Over here, by the Witch!

Later he warns her – Watch out for the bat!

Whereupon she screams frantically and yells – Jimmy!

Part 2 starts out with him saying – I've got to find Julie an' get out of this cave.

It's been two long days. Julie, Julie, Julie?

She answers – Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy?

Then the guitar picks up the same theme in a higher key with plenty reverb-drenched surf-jam. Later as panic starts to set in, he calls out – Julie, Julie?

And she cries – I still can't see you. I'm over here.

Then she screams. They call back and forth once more but Part 2 ends with them both still lost in the cave. Paul Pearson has pointed out several inconsistencies in the piece. “If he can see the bat but can't see Julie, how does he know that she's in its path?… They get separated, stranded away from each other for 48 hours. Except they're close enough to be able to exchange communication.” (Pearson 2013) Another blogger had this to say – “Certainly ‘The Cave’ is much

Page 5: ROCK MUSIC - caveinspiredmusic.comcaveinspiredmusic.com/rubriques/9_rock_music/pdf/9k_Surf.pdf · ROCK MUSIC SURF & INSTRUMENTAL ... THE VENTURES PLAY TELSTAR/ THE VENTURES IN SPACE

headier, atmospheric stuff than the average novelty churned by the Los Angeles independent labels of the era. ‘The Cave’ also borrows much from the murky, menacing production and strange character voices of Bobby Christian and the Allen Sisters’ 1958 horror opus ‘The Spider & the Fly,’ adding tremolo guitar, lunatic jungle drums and heaps of teen psychosexual drama in the process.” (Little Danny 2011) Yet another blogger, Richie, raved – “I just had about had a heart attack of insane gushing record nerd pleasure the first time I heard this exotic surf beatnik jazz freakout cum psychosexual teenage radio drama…. [Here] Gary Webb made his own stab at horror hitmaking, but no avail. Still, I’m sure he’d be pleased to know that 51 years later, Jimmy and Julie are still stuck in that cave and our hearts.” (Richie 2013) Gary Webb recorded another single "Drum City" for the Donna label in 1960 and was also the drummer with the Hollywood Argyles for the classic “Alley Oop” (see under “Alley Oop”). His style of drumming was very similar to that of Sandy Nelson (see below “Drums in a Sea Cave”). The name, Julie, reappears in another rock 'n' roll cave records: Julie was one of the names mentioned in "Cave Man Love” by Spaceman & the Rockets (1958) (see under Rock ‘n’ Roll). There was the Jan & Dean 45 "Julie" (1961) and the well-known smoldering-torch singer, Julie London. Spanish EP: ROOM 304 (1964) Polydor EPM 27744 7" 45rpm (EP) (Sd 1 – Bd 2) Notes: Richie Allen, reputed by some to have a guitar style similar to Duane Eddy, was one of the precursors of the West Coast-surf rock sound. At one time he played guitar for the drummer, Sandy Nelson, who later came out with a cave rock instrumental, "Drums in a Sea Cave" (see below). Eventually, Richard Podolar turned to producing groups like Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. Blogger Little Danny wrote about Richie Allen’s releases – “Like many of the era’s studio-created guitar instrumental albums, these tended to be a bit generic – the surf-themed LPs only nominally sounded like

Page 6: ROCK MUSIC - caveinspiredmusic.comcaveinspiredmusic.com/rubriques/9_rock_music/pdf/9k_Surf.pdf · ROCK MUSIC SURF & INSTRUMENTAL ... THE VENTURES PLAY TELSTAR/ THE VENTURES IN SPACE

surf music – but the best moments – like “The Rising Surf,” “Haunted Guitar” and “Stranger from Durango” – nonetheless demonstrated Allen’s stately, booming guitar riffs to great effect. Among these moments is also “Cave Man,” released in September of 1962. Moody, if not spooky, and with a great Spagetti (sic) Western flavor.” (Little Danny 2011) Ref: Little Danny 2011, Richie Allen, Cave Man, (Reviews 3 cave 45 records), officenaps Richie Allen, Cave Man, (2:21), YouTube (◄COMPLETE AUDIO SAMPLE) Richie Allen, Room 304 EP, France, Discogs Richie Allen, Room 304 EP, Spain, 45cat Richard Polodor, Bio, Wikipedia

It could be rock or country. Given the title it would seem to be either a rock or maybe a jazz piece inspired by a night club called The Cave. Linemen Records is a Wichita, Kansas label, probably relate in some way to the song, “Wichita Lineman,” that was a big hit for Glen Campbell in 1968. There was a well-known club in Kansas City, Missouri called, The Cave, which is now a dance club called Club X O. Bob Shepherd should not be confused with Bob Sheppard a West Coast jazz saxophonist. DRUMS IN A SEA CAVE Rock ‘n’ Roll – Surf – Instrumental Comp: Sander NELSON Rts: Sander Music (BMI)

Imperial LP-9298 Notes: In the late 50s, Nelson did a lot of studio back-up work and was on hand, he tells us, playing cider bottle for that crazy session in 1960 when the Hollywood Argyles recorded, "Alley Oop" (see under “Alley Oop”). (Delaney 1977) In 1959 he had his own first big hit' "Teen Beat," which he had put together with the help of Richard Podolar (see above “Cave Man”) and Bruce Johnston (who performs on the Beach Boys version of' "Alley Oop"). Plas Johnson (the tenor sax man on "McDonald's Cave" – see below) also played on several of Nelson's albums between 1962 and 1963. With a handful of drum solo hits and many albums to his credit, Nelson became an important influence on the California "Surf Rock" scene. This particular number is a drum solo using sea wave sound effects. Many of the Surf Rock instrumentals in the 60s used sound effects of one kind or another as a gimmick. Alternating between the sound of the crashing sea waves and short drum passages, this piece finally builds to an extended drum solo ending with the waves again. The title is probably meant to be taken in the figurative sense of drumming waves, but even if taken literally it's not as incredible as it seems. There are lots of sea caves along the coast of southern California and the surfing crowd used them occasionally for beach parties, which often were animated by guitar and bongo drums. Flip Sd: Brontosaurus Stomp Notes: Rather simplistic rock 'n' roll instrumental stuff based on the nursery rhyme tune, "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." But it's nice to learn that on that farm there's a cave. Most noticeable here are the tenor and baritone sax duet and the "caveman" stomping drums. We are told "the group had a cave man persona and used a lot of kettle drums to get a stone age effect." (Anon. 1986) French LP – No. D3 The Piltdown Men achieved much greater success in England than in the States. This single entered the British charts on Sept. 8, 1960 and made it to number 14 in Nov. 1960, whereas in the States it only got to number 75. (Rice et al. 1979) The group, consisting of Capitol session musicians brought together by Lincoln Mayorga and Ed Cobb, took its name from the Piltdown Man, a composite fossilized "human" skull found in England, which proved to be one of the biggest paleontological hoaxes of all time. Most of the instrumentals recorded by this group were based on melodies taken without credit from other composers. Lincoln Mayorga, an accomplished classical pianist, was also the arranger-producer of the Four Preps (who did a parody version of “Alley-Oop”) and Ed Cobb was their bass singer (see under “Alley Oop – Related Songs). But the most famous member here was Plas Johnson, session man extraordinaire on numerous Capitol takes with Gene Vincent and others in the late 1950s. (Hardy & Laing 1976) He also played tenor on The Markett’s version of “Bat Cave” (see entry above). Co: W & G Records Time: 2:15 EP: PEDRO THE FISHERMAN Label: W & G WCQ 1726 Spec: 7" 33rpm (EP) (Sd 2 – Bd 1) Notes: It's not surprising that the instrumental rock rendition of this nursery rhyme tune, itself so familiar to all Anglo-Saxon English-speaking cultures, ended up being performed by groups around the world. This instrumental rock group from Melbourne, Australia (1962-1965) did all their recordings for W&G label in 1963-64 and this EP had their own version of the Piltdown Men's hit. This combo has nothing to do with the American rhythm 'n' blues group of the late 50s or with the British group (pre-Shadows) who recorded for Decca in 1965. This rare record has been seen on an Australian eBay posting but has never been heard. 7" 33rpm Belgian & Dutch Single Spec: (Nos. A1, A2, C, D, E, & F) 7" 45rpm Notes: This Swiss instrumental rock group from Lausanne in the early 60s should not be confused with Les Aiglons, a late 70s group from the Antilles. The name in English means The Eaglets, but, on their American single the group's name is given as The Eagles. At least three other rock groups used the latter name: one from the mid-50s; another a well-known American vocal group from 70s; and the third, an instrumental rock group from Bristol, England during the same period in the early 60s. Instrumental rock groups (The Shadows, etc.) were very much in vogue in England and on the continent during the early 1960s up to 1964 when the Beatles took over. This was the first record by the Aiglons. Labeled as a twist number, a more accurate description would be an upbeat tune showing marked influence from the "outer space" sounds of the Ventures and The Tornados. We are told it was inspired by the 1962 hit, "Telstar" from the British instrumental rock group, The Tornados. (Nauwelaers 1994)

12" 33rpm (Sd 1 – Bd 4) Notes: Stewart and Engel first got together as a duo in Los Angeles in April 1963 and called themselves The Dalton Brothers. According to the liner notes, this particular cut (along with three others here) were first recorded in 1963 and 1964 by The Dalton Brothers. It is not stated that this number was released at that time so the assumption is that it is being released for the first time on this album. A mishmash of different styles with an upbeat rhythm. The keyboards set the theme, then guitar with roaring sax behind, and here and there throughout there’s this high bomp-bomp sound. About halfway in there are short calls in the background, which sound very familiar: “Jimmy – Julie – Jimmy – Julie – (screams)” – an obvious tribute to Gary “Spider” Webb’s classic “The Cave” (see above RK-IN4). A tenor solo follows and they all wrap it up. Referring to the calls one critic said – “’Swingin' At The Batcave’ has some weird ambient yapping in the background.” (Geekboy n.d.) This is not the same John Stewart who became a member of the Kingston Trio in 1961.
