Mother’s Wisdom On a farm down in Missouri That’s now fallen to decay There were once some little children When came evening, they would play Then midway through one summer Came a cousin from out west They were told to bond together And to do their very best Bonding is a lofty vision That kids don’t take much to heart But, they set themselves to do it Lest the family fly apart Then, one evening after sunset By the lawn inside the fence Susie spotted there a firefly Cousin Paul’s eyes grew intense What is that?! What is that?! Said he Then Susie’s brother Jamie said It’s a bug; let’s go and catch one But be careful or they’re dead The cousins in Missouri Of their fireflies were quite proud “Bet you don’t have no fireflies” And, they said it very loud “Oh yeah, well, we have mountains We have mountains very tall And, I don’t see no mountains here Not even one at all” So, their mothers calmed them down a bit They said “don’t act like jerks” When you act like that when bonding We all know that never works So the kids, they smiled and carried on And caught a few more bugs They all made up before bedtime Amid lots and lots of hugs So, the cousins have their fireflies And Paul, his mountains tall Everyone is quite happy There was bonding after all Now, forty years have passed They are still bonded now They’re all good friends and buddies And, their mothers showed them how - Rich Boettcher

Hidden Secrets
It’s an Aztec design on this Frankoma platter, and where I got it does not really matter, although I fear it may soon someday shatter and signal destruction with a riotous clatter. My only fear is that in the chard splatter some secrets may exit in the jumbled chatter and be revealed in the pitter patter to make us all feel so much sadder. —C. F. Kelly
