There is tremendous opportunity and unmet technology capacity need in the nonprofit sector

*Sources: Johns Hopkins University and McKinsey Global Institute, May 2011, Internet Matters, CGAP

10+ million nonprofit organizations (NPOs) employ almost 50M people and contribute up to 5% of total GDP*

“Today, technology is the social catalyst empowering communities in all corners of the globe to improve their lives and shape their collective future.  Modern technology is opening floodgates of information and influence historically reserved only for those in power.”Jeff Skoll, Philanthropist and First President of E-

Bay

Technology offers transformative power:• The Internet accounts for 3.4% of GDP* • Mobiles led to an 8% increase in profits for fishermen in India• The Arab Spring movement was aided by social

media/mobiles

Technology in the social sector is behind the curve:• Economic crisis, changes in technology and lack of in-house

technology management elevate need• Gap exists between NPO needs and donor capabilities/reach

Local Impact Restart Romania Challenge

53 “challengers” • 5 embassies • 141 ideas • 516 user accounts • ~94,000 page views • ~38,000 visits • Sponsorship by Microsoft, Cisco, Orange, Vodafone

This project aims to end parking-space disputes by centralizing information gathered from citizens as they spot deserted cars. Project submitters hope to reduce the violence that sometimes erupts by shedding light on abandoned cars and making it easy to find open parking lots.

This project would spur the Romanian government to action, not by direct influence but by encouraging citizens to act. Its ultimate aim is a self-generated citizen political program whose existence would put pressure on the political establishment.

NGOsource, a project of TechSoup Global and the Council on Foundations, is an equivalency determination (ED) service that connects U.S. grantmakers and foundations to international NGOs.

GuideStar International promotes transparency and civil-society reporting.

TechSoup.org, and the TechSoup Global Network, of partners around the world facilitate access to and effective usage of technology tools by CSOs across the globe. Hundreds of thousands of CSOs are served.

• TSG – along with partners in 44 countries - is building a global data repository to connect civil society organizations (CSOs) with technology tools, resources, education, information and each other

• The data repository currently consists of Information on hundreds of thousands of CSOs across the globe and is used to increase the transparency of the sector and to facilitate program delivery

• TSG is working to establish standards for and effective usage of global civil society data

• Prominent TechSoup Global data resources include:

Page 18

The Challenge:

• CSOs assist populations and causes that are otherwise underserved by governmental or corporate actors

• Civil society is growing in size and significance

• The global financial crises place further pressure on CSOs and foundations as governments face increased debt and pressures on their subsidies

• Basic information on CSOs is generally incomplete

• CSO data is disaggregated with few centralized databases

Civil society organizations and foundations play a critical role in serving unmet needs yet information

about organizations is often disaggregated and difficult to track.

Page 19
