Chalfont Heights Hill Climb Back in the 1930’s a few clubs, including MCAC, ran some hill climbs on a

course at Chalfont Heights and June this year is the 80th Anniversary of the

last such event run on the public roads that were closed for the event.

David Evans, who lives in Gerrards Cross, is trying to piece together the his-

tory of the Hill Climb course and of the events that ran there. He is particu-

larly interested in entry lists, results or, in fact, any information or pictures

that are available. If anyone has any such information, please let me know

and I will pass on the details to David. Tony

I am sorry it has been so long since the last issue but volunteers have been

non-existent and contributions light! However, as we are at the end of the year

and considering the annual awards something needed to be done.

The Rockingham Stages, whilst it could have done with some more MCAC

members helping out (thanks to those that did put in a appearance and assist),

was very successful and will contribute a good amount to the coffers this year.

Congratulations to all the award winners and a special mention to new mem-

bers Chris West (with Keith Hounslow alongside) who set some fastest stage

times on the Saturday and the Trophy Rally (on only his 3rd rally) and Rhys

Yates who almost won the Sunday event on his second event!

Looking to the future, PLEASE offer to help with the MiddleWick Stages in

May. I know many think it is a long way to go, but you only need to make the

journey once.

Darren is finding it very difficult to arrange the social calendar, especially the

Partner’s Evenings due to the poor turnout. What would you like to see for the

main Club night each month? What about outside events?

We have the AGM coming up in April and, unfortunately, Martin Lush has

intimated that after due consideration he has to give up the job of Treasurer.

This is an important position on the Council, which has to be nominated prior

to the evening. Therefore, if you are willing to take on this position or know of

someone willing to be nominated, please let Andy Greenland know as soon as

possible in order that the transfer can be arranged. We also need more volun-

teers to take on some of the positions on Council as I can no longer carry on

fulfilling all the roles that no-one else is able to do. On their own, each role is

not too time consuming but together they are taking over my life.

Tony

The Christine Poxon Celebration Fun Run

Well, after a long wait, it has finally happened. The inaugural running of The Christine

Poxon Celebration Fun Run took place around the leafy lanes of Oxfordshire on Sun-

day 27th July.

Following an anxious few weeks after the regulations

were issued, a rather re- spectable 12 cars assembled

at Oxford Services on the M40. The driver’s briefing

took place and the road- books were distributed. The

entrants then spent some time trying to work out where

the twenty photographs were taken and, once done,

then decided which fifteen of them to visit and in which

order.

Gradually, the cars all drove away from the services until

finally Brian Catt, Max and I were the only people left

there (apart from the thou- sand or so people visiting

who were nothing to do with the event). We then decided how we were to while away

the time until the finish control opened at 4.00pm. I was going to tell Brian where on

the map the clues were located when we discovered that Brian had brought the wrong

map, clutching as he did map 164 instead of 165. Fortunately there is quite a large

overlap between the maps, so Brian was able to plot enough points to keep him

amused for the afternoon. Max and I selected the

points that we were going to visit and watch all the

entrants running round like headless chickens trying

to answer the

questions. Unfortu-

nately, things did

not work out to

plan. We elected to

visit the plots south

of the M40 and it appears that the competitors

elected to travel north first. It was quite a lonely

afternoon. We were heading for the finish when we

decided to try one more clue as we were passing nearby. Here we had our only en-

counter of the afternoon. As we were arriving, Brian came ambling round the corner

(having secreted his car out of the way so as to not help the competitors). He was

studiously listening to Radio 5 and the exploits of one Lewis Hamilton at the Austrian

Grand Prix. We stayed with him to hear the commentary on the closing laps of the

race and then headed to the finish in Stadhampton.

We arrived at the finish and agreed with Tony (an ex colleague of mine and now land-

Page 11: Rockingham Stages - 6/7th December 2014 · January 2015 Rockingham Stages - 6/7th December 2014 Chris West / Keith Hounslow Peugeot 306 Maxi Paul Bareham / Jaz Bareham ... 5th Feb.

Number: 310 Page 9

lord of The Crown) where we would set up our results table, then sat and waited for

the competitors to arrive. First to arrive was Joe Pox-

on and co-driver Roberto and Max and I set about

marking their answer sheet. Competitors were kind

to us arriving as they did, just as we finished marking

the previous sheet,

so we were kept quite

busy for the hour and

a half that the finish

control was open. It

soon became appar-

ent that we had a problem, four cars had all cleaned

the event and we were left to sort out the winner.

(team Andrew Williamson had actually managed to

visit and answer all twenty of the clues but, in accordance with the rules, only fifteen

answers were counted).

The tie break was for the drivers to declare what the tyre pressure in their front offside

wheel was supposed to be, a tyre pressure gauge appeared and I went to check what

the drivers actual pressures were. It first seemed that we still had a problem as the

first two cars checked were both out by half a psi! Peter Cox claimed fourth place with

a difference of four psi and so it was down to Tony

Phillips. He told me that there was an easy way to

check his and turned on his ignition. A light on the

dashboard declared that he had thirty seven and a

half psi but I was not prepared to accept that and

said that the pressure must be checked with the

same gauge as the rest. This gave us thirty seven

psi, which was exactly what Tony had declared and

so he was deemed the winner, with Andrew and

Sav Johal being joint second.

Other placings are as listed at the end of this article.

Thanks are extended to Max, who spent many days driving around taking photo-

graphs, to Brian for illustrating this article and taking other photos to record the event

for posterity, and also to all those that entered, we could not have done it without you.

Thanks also go to Tony and Carole Brandon and their staff at The Crown in Stad-

hampton for extending their usual Sunday meal

times so that we would have something to eat at

the finish.

A special thank you is extended to Joe Poxon, not

only for his support of the event and providing such

an apt photograph of Christine for the cover of the

roadbook (shown at the top of this article), but also

for his extremely generous gesture of paying for

the first drink for every entrant on the event.

Page 10 The Middlesex Magazine

In a moment of madness, I understand that I have agreed to put myself (and Max)

through all of the traumas and stresses in volunteering to organise the event again

next year.

It would be a pleasure so that the memory of this special lady is not faded in the an-

nuls of Middlesex County Automobile Club.

Club Championships

At the January Council Meeting it was decided to make a couple of changes

to the various Championship Rules:

The Annual Championship Year will, in future, run for the calendar year,

so the 2015 year will run from 1st December 2014 to 31st December 2015.

The Middlesex Challenge will be restricted to a maximum of 2 events per

category.
