STINGRAYS EXCEL (continued) Bianca Russell also had an outstanding performance, taking 1.91 minutes off her previous time, to mark a new time of 18.39.93. Alex Holloway set a new benchmark in her 400 IM event, attaining a time of 5.50.96 minutes. Dylan Martin-Rose swam well in all events, one highlight being a 6.10.69 minutes in his 400m Freestyle. Our younger swimmers excelled, including Peta Collard, who took 58.94 seconds from her 100IM time. Callum Shepherd slashed 53.41 seconds from his 200 Freestyle time, and Georgie Fink cut 38.63 seconds from her 200m IM event. William Lorimer also shed 31.09 seconds from his 200IM. All round, the entire club showed the results of lots of quality training over the past season and made their coaches, and parents, proud. As always, our club was noted by officials by being the loudest and best supporters of our swimmers, and for showing good team spirit. Well done to the swimmers who have not attended many meets, but put in an amazing effort at such a big and busy meet.

Coaching Team: Jodi O'Connor, Gordon Shaw and Brittany Russell Jodi O'Connor is a Senior Squad coach for the Rockingham Stingrays Swim Club and has a wealth of experience not only as a coach but as a swimmer as well. A mother of two, Jodi has been teaching and coaching for 29 years. This year marks the tenth year of coaching with our club. Throughout this period she has represented our club as a coach, swimmer and committee member. Jodi has a love of swimming and her passion for the sport is evident in her dedication towards the squads she coaches. She says that she was fortunate to have been involved in swimming throughout her childhood and describes it as a "healthy mind and body sport." She has an impressive swimming resume, having competed at a National level as an Individual Medley swimmer and also travelled to New Zealand to represent Australia in the Australian Lifesaving Team. Jodi's true passion is Open Water Swimming, an arena in which she has participated as a competitor and a coach. She has represented our club as the Open Water Coach on many National Age Group trips. Jodi says these experiences have created fantastic memories with our talented swimmers over the years. As a competitor, Jodi has been heavily involved with Open Water Swimming and has accumulated two decades of Open Water racing! She completed three solo crossings in the Rottnest Channel Swim, placing 4th, 6th and 6th, as well as one Duo crossing, where she placed 3rd. In addition to her achievements as a swimmer, she was selected to be a Disability Coach for two years with Swimming WA on the Team Camps and was fortunate enough to be selected on an Australian Team Camp for disability athletes. Jodi says that she loves to share her experiences and knowledge with the club members, in particular the swimmers and fellow coaches, whilst also trying to learn something new each day. "The smiles and amazement on our swimmers' faces is just the best reward," Jodi says. There's no doubt that we Stingrays are fortunate to have such a multi skilled athlete and coach on our team!

Swimming Australia's GO Club PB is the national swimming club standard that assesses swimming clubs' overall performance by analysing their results in five key areas:

• Memberships • Administration • Activities • Coaching and Officiating • Marketing and Promotion •

Rockingham Stingrays Swim Club participates in this assessment to gain information and feedback about our club, to see how we can constantly strive to ensure we grow and achieve in ways that directly benefit our swimmers and members. We are proud to announce that our club is one of only 12 within the state of Western Australia to achieve a SILVER AWARD. This is recognition of the hard work of previous and current committee members, coaches, swimmers,

and parent volunteers. Congratulations to all of those who have worked so hard over the previous year, as this award acknowledges your efforts.

SWIM TRAINING: Unlike some sports, swimming competitively requires a lot of training time. The reason for this is partly due to the fact that kids are learning a huge amount of skills in a foreign environment (ie: water). Cardio fitness, motor skills, strength and flexibility are all important in swimming, but many skills are not transferred easily from land based sports into the water. This is why nothing replaces the benefits of consistently training in the pool. To place swimmers in the appropriate squads, coaches weigh up many important factors. Although ability may seem to be the only consideration, coaches focus on physiology, age, maturity, attitude and the overall wellbeing of the swimmer to enable them to develop at their own natural pace. Coaches spend a lot of time planning ahead for the upcoming season and are dedicated to ensuring swimmers obtain the best balance between training for speed and endurance, mastering skills and techniques, all the while allowing each athlete to grow and develop and achieve their personal goals. They are dedicated to educating young athletes about other health topics such as nutrition and enable our swimmers to gain self confidence and independence. Please support your coaches by ensuring you inform them as soon as possible of any upcoming absences as this affects the training schedule. If you have any questions you would like to discuss with a coach, please organise a time before or after training.
