Shrek—Believe All Ogre Again

William Steig (1907-2003), the artist once crowned the “King of Car-toons” by Newsweek, remains the

New Yorker’s longest-running contributor with more than 1,600 drawings and 117 cov-ers to his name. He began writing and illus-trating books for children at the age of sixty.

In the 1990 picture book Shrek!, Steig took familiar themes and characters from traditional fairy tales and wove them into a fabric of cutting wit and humor to create a modern-day fairy tale for kids and adults alike. From the indomitable Pinocchio to the lovable ogre himself, Shrek! allows each character to embody a sense of optimism and vigor that, while absent from classic fairy tales, fits nicely into the mind set of a new and involved generation. Whereas the classic fairy tale ogre is threatening, Shrek is kind, strong and wise.

DreamWorks Pic-tures brought Steig’s modern fairy tale to the screen in 2001. Early in the film’s production process, Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes felt that the story was a perfect fit for Broadway, and he and DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg de-termined that the first step was to see how the characters came to life on screen.

The movie version of Shrek had its own fairy tale ending, going on to become one of the most successful film series of all time, even winning the first-ever Academy Award for an Animated Feature film. Having con-qured Hollywood, it was time for Shrek and his merry cohorts to take Broadway by storm. DreamWorks assembled some of the most celebrated, talented and slightly twisted creative types working on Broadway, with David Lindsay-Abaire (Book and Lyr-ics), Jeanine Tesori (Music), Jason Moore and Rob Ashford (Co-Directors) at the helm. They also turned to the top notch designer Tim Hatley for sets and costumes.

Shrek The Musical debuted in the sum-mer of 2008 at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre

and opened on Broadway in December of that year. During its Broadway run it played over 500 performances, garnered eight Tony Award nominations, ranked in the top ten musicals for ticket sales in 2009, and em-barked on a national tour. In May of last year, the show opened a production based in Lon-don, England.

The musical’s latest tour, coming to the Fisher Theatre in February, incorporates some critically-acclaimed adjustments in-cluding a new opening, new musical ar-rangements, and a new song, “Forever,” sung by the red Dragon.

During its run in Costa Mesa, California in October, Shrek The Musical made Mi-

cheal L. Quintos of Broadway World laugh for most of the night. In his review, he said “this amusing, big-kid friendly live-action cartoon musical delivers the laughs not with a beguiling snark but, rather with fart battles, cheeky sight gags and a sassy attitude,” add-ing that it’s “a silly, harmlessly fun show.”

The new production’s talented cast and hi-larious pop culture and Broadway referenc-es—look for jabs at everything from Wicked and A Chorus Line to Dreamgirls and Les Misérables—will undoubtably bring tons of good-humored fun to the Fisher Theatre stage in February and March 2012.

Shrek The Musical plays at the Fisher Theatre February 28–March 11. Tickets are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office, ticketmaster.com and 800-982-2787. Groups of twelve or more e-mail [email protected] (subject line Shrek) or call (313) 871-1132.

His work has garnered him a Dora Mavor Moore award for theatrical design, an IALD award for architectural

lighting, and an ISES award for large scale special events. In another life in the 80’s, he was in the music business, so he feels right at home in the Rock of Ages world.

MARK MINNICK (Casting) has cast exception-al talent in over 25 touring productions including this season tours of Monty Python’s Spamalot, Rock of Ages and The Color Purple. International: Fame (2009/10 China tour), and Grease (Asian tour, Macau, China and Istanbul, Turkey).

CHRIS CICCHINO (Guitar 1) Lead guitar: The Toxic Avenger Musical (Off Broadway), Rock of Ages (Broadway and 1st Nat. Tour), toured and recorded with Jim Breuer (SNL), Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Hootie and the Blowfish, Alexi Lalas, Heaven, Dave Chap-pelle, Tracy Morgan and many others. Much love to my favorite rockers, Jayce and Cree.

MADDOX (Guitar 2) is proud to continue his Rock of Ages journey with this production. Maddox has worked with bands such as Kill Hannah, Smash-ing Pumpkins, Jet, Papa Roach, in addition to pro-ducing his own solo music. Maddox would like to thank his family for their support over the years.

ALAN CHILDS (Drums) has played drums for David Bowie, Julian Lennon, Rod Stewart, John Waite (partial list). Broadway tours: The Who’s Tommy, Rent, Hairspray, Aida (partial list). Much love to Sakiko and Derek.

ANDY GEROLD (Bass) Andy is a professional multi-instrumentalist and guitar player for My Darling Murder. He is best known for playing gui-tar in Ashes Divide and bass for Marilyn Manson.

SUZANNE APICELLA (Production Stage Man-ager) Broadway: Burn the Floor. National Tours: Spamalot, The Producers, Sweeney Todd, The Color Purple. Regional: Carnival (Goodspeed); Toys in the Attic, The Cave Dwellers, Biography (Pearl Theatre); Metamorphoses, The Goat (FST).

ARTHUR J. M. CALLAHAN (Company Manag-er) is excited to join the Rock of Ages Tour and rock the country city by city. He has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia as an Actor and Company Manger. Most recently he was Company Manager for The Color Purple Tour with Phoenix Entertainment. He thanks his Family and Friends for enduring the never ending question “Where in the world is Arthur?”

STEPHEN B. KANE (Executive Producer) is delighted to be part of the Rock of Ages sensa-tion as it moves forward through North America. After completing degrees in both Business and Arts Management, Mr. Kane spent the past three decades supervising every aspect of touring show business. He has mounted more than 70 Broad-way musicals in North America and has produced and/or managed major productions throughout Europe, South America and Asia. Mr. Kane’s current collaborations include Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Color Purple, Rock of Ages, and

long running Korean language productions of Grease and Fame. He is the CEO for Baker Park Associates, Inc., a theatrical management and consulting firm, a member of ISPA, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and was co-founder of both Phoenix Productions in North America and Phoenix Asia Group, a Singapore-based the-atrical think-tank dedicated to the networking of production, marketing and entertainment invest-ment opportunities throughout the Far East. For real adventure, he spends post-production time in sunny south Florida raising his 7-year-old sons, Andrew and Aidan.

MICHAEL McFADDEN (Artistic Producer) is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Phoenix Entertainment. He has guided more than 70 ma-jor productions as Producer and/or Director on both the national and international stage. Produc-tions include Spamalot, The Color Purple, God-spell, Buddy, The Will Rogers Follies, Kopit and Yeston’s Phantom, Grease, Man of La Mancha, Gypsy, Ring of Fire, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Direction credits include Smokey Joe’s Café and The Pajama Game (U.S. National tours), Fame (Korea and China tours), Grease (China tour, Republic of Singapore, Ma-laysia, Macau and Istanbul, Turkey) and Sing Along Santa (Korea and U.S. tours). Mr. McFad-den is a partner in Baker Park Associates, Inc. and founding member of both Phoenix Productions and Phoenix Asia Group. When not traveling, he shares his quiet time with his wife, LeAnne, and sons, Sam and Liam.

PHOENIX ENTERTAINMENT (Producer) is an established international theatrical producing and management enterprise founded by long time colleagues Stephen Kane and Michael McFad-den. Its mission is to develop, produce and present the very finest in touring Broadway musicals and family entertainment. Throughout their three de-cades of theatrical success and industry partner-ship, the Phoenix team has delivered thousands of performances of more than 100 live productions on four continents. Phoenix is currently launching the national tour of Rock of Ages and all new sea-sons of their critically acclaimed touring produc-tions of Monty Python’s Spamalot and The Color Purple, which follow on the proud touring heels of Gypsy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Pajama Game. Team Phoenix also represents the Korean language productions of Grease and Fame, both enjoying open-ended runs in Seoul. Under the direction of colleague Ellie Chung, their Singapore-based affiliate Phoenix Asia Group brings international booking, produc-ing, presenting, classical-artist management and theatrical investment to the collective production and management capabilities of Phoenix Enter-tainment. phoenix-ent.com
