Dear Friends, You may never have heard of one of the more important institutions of the Conservative Movement, but it needs you now. That organization is MERCAZ, and I have the privilege of serving on the Board of MERCAZ. In Hebrew, the word MERCAZ means “The Center.” Referring to Israel, the cultural center of the Jewish people, MERCAZ is the Zionist organization of the world- wide Conservative Movement. It promotes and supports Zionist education, Israel programs and aliyah within our movement.  It also represents the interests of Masorti (Conservative) Judaism in the World Zionist Organization (WZO) and in the Jewish Agency for Israel. January - February 2015 | 5775 MERCAZ lobbies for protection of Israel’s environment and for a peaceful, 2-State solution to Israel’s security challenges. MERCAZ also advocates for religious pluralism within Israel and is a force for funding the liberal religious movements (such as Reform and Conservative Judaism) in Israel. It may sound byzantine, but here is how it works: American Jewish federations raise money for Israel. Much of this money goes to the WZO and the Jewish Agency. The WZO and the Jewish Agency distribute those monies. The apportionment of those monies is directly affected by the relative sizes of the delegations of each of the participating Zionist organizations. The more delegates that we, the Conservative Movement, have in the WZO and the Jewish Agency, the more money our movement in Israel receives and the more say we have in ensuring that the flow of money and the guiding philosophy of the Jewish Agency supports our values in Israel. The size of the MERCAZ delegation in the WZO is a direct result of votes in the World Zionist Congress election. The more Conservative Jews who register, and who vote for MERCAZ, the more MERCAZ delegates are elected, and the more money is allocated to the Conservative/Masorti Movement in Israel, and the more we can make a difference. That’s where we come in. The election for the 37th World Zionist Organization Congress is almost here. You can help MERCAZ increase the size of our delegation simply by registering with the American Zionist Movement, the U.S. affiliate of the WZO, and then voting for MERCAZ delegates when you receive your ballot. Registering costs just $10.00. You can register by going to www. mercazusa.org and clicking on “Register” or completing a mail-in registration. Registration begins on January 13th and ends April 30th.   How much does your vote help? A LOT! Fewer than 4% of the members of American Conservative Jews participated in the last Zionist Congress elections. If we doubled that percentage, an additional 1.7 million dollars could be allocated to Conservative/Masorti institutions in Israel. This could go a long way to strengthen liberal Jewish life in Israel. Since the days of Theodore Herzl, Jews from around the world have been participating in the World Zionist Congress, shaping the direction of what is today our beloved State of Israel. Jews in the United States have the opportunity this coming winter to have their voices heard in Israel through a democratic election of delegates to the next Zionist Congress. Just think what you can achieve with just $10.00! Join me in registering now, and in exercising your right to vote in the upcoming Zionist Congress election! We have been very busy at Rodef Sholom and have much to look forward to as we begin a new year.

By the time you read this we will have once again hosted the homeless during H.E.L.P. week. I am so appreciative of everyone’s hard work to make this a success, and I want to take a moment to thank Susan Longman. Her efforts help to make sure that the week runs smoothly. She and her committee were amazing! I would like to take this opportunity to update you with the progress we have made in our plans to move. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors and Josh David, Relocation Chair, we have four committees working to facilitate our move with the greatest efficiency and purpose. January - February 2015

3President’s Message continuedSale of Building Committee: • The mission of this committee is to decide upon

the timing for the listing of the synagogue, to select a real estate agent, to identify the repairs that should be made to Whealton Road, to prepare the building for sale, and to develop a plan for the possibility that the current building may be sold and need to be vacated before the new building is ready for occupancy.

• Committee members: Arnie Abrams (Chair), Phil Saville, Ken Kaplan, Shelly Portnoy, and Allen Fraley (ex officio members: Josh David, Robin Levy and Rabbi)

• This committee is seeking to identify a real estate agent with specific experience with houses of worship. After selection of the real estate agent the plan for repairs, staging and transitional needs will be prepared.

Rabbinage Committee:• The mission of this committee is to determine

the best location for the rabbinage (including whether to own or rent it offsite); to plan for the acquisition, leasing, or building of the rabbinage; and, if appropriate, obtain the necessary support, as requested, from the City of Newport News for a passage through the City Center Blvd. sound wall.

• Committee members: Joy Vicens, Barbara Gordon, Jim Barnett, Shoshana Marziano, Bonnie Brooks, Howard Waters, and Brian Weinberg (ex officio members: Josh David, Robin Levy and Rabbi)

• This committee has surveyed the UJC and surrounding properties and has been in communication with the city regarding sound-wall access to the UJC campus property.

Sanctuary Committee:• The mission of this committee is to

receive congregational input and make a recommendation for the layout of the sanctuary, including whether and to what degree fixed seating should be used, and to work with the appropriate professionals to design the appearance of the sanctuary.

• Committee members: Andrea Weiser (Chair), Martha Katz-Hyman, Sam Parrucci, Sam Margolin, Libby David, Barbara Gordon, Saul Gleiser, Deanne David, and Roy Lasris (ex officio members: Josh David, Robin Levy and Rabbi)

• This committee has created a “Look Book” on Pinterest to allow the committee members to access, review and discuss a variety of designs and ideas from sanctuaries around the world.

Design Committee:• The mission of this committee is to develop a

final design for the new building for Board and Congregational approval.

• Committee members: Steve Shapiro (Chair), Robin Murov, Jane Susan Frank, Bonnie Katzenberg, Norman Katzenberg, Beverly Phillips and recently added, Saul Gleiser (ex officio members: Josh David, Robin Levy and Rabbi)

• This committee has been in contact with the USCJ (United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism) for guidance in this process; contacted congregations around North America with recently designed and constructed buildings; screened architects with specific experience and positive performance reviews in the building of synagogues; traveled out of town, as a committee, to evaluate completed projects; and selected (with Board approval as of our December Board meeting) an architectural firm (Levin/Brown Architects of Owings Mills, MD) with 25 years of experience

specializing in synagogue and church architecture and more than 150 projects successfully completed to date.

I have had the opportunity to participate in and witness committee activity with all of these outstanding volunteers, many of whom have training and experience specific to

our purpose. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to express sincere appreciation to Jon Frank and Moti Marziano, who have added tremendous value to this extensive endeavor, and to all of our valued congregants who are participating in this undertaking. Please feel free to contribute any ideas or suggestions as we continue through this process.Robin Levy,President

Over the past several months Tanya Lacey and I have begun going through the library, checking the list of books in our database against the books that are on the shelves in preparation for our relocation. We are removing books that are very old, not appropriate for the library, are in poor condition, or are unneeded duplicates. Most of these books will be in next year’s Social Action used book sale, although some have been put into the genizah (the repository for holy books that will be buried), others have been disposed of, and others will be sent to other libraries. We have also found that books that should be on the shelves are not, especially children’s books. Please look through the books in your own libraries for those that might be from Rodef Sholom. Should you have any, please return them to the synagogue during the week, when the synagogue is open; on Sunday during religious school; or contact me to arrange a pick-up. Because of the amount of work to be done in the library to prepare it for the relocation, Sisterhood is requesting that congregants wishing to donate books to the Rodef Sholom library give them instead to the Social Action Committee to be sold at the annual used book sale. Although they may be books that might be appropriate for the library, we just cannot accept them right now. We have several hundred books waiting to be cataloged and added to the library’s collection, and we cannot handle any more donated books at this time. Thank you very much for your support of the library! Martha Katz-Hyman

Sisterhood Book Club

The next book club meeting at the temple will take place on Sunday, January 11 at 10:15 am. The book selection is Ask for a Convertible by Danit Brown. It is a 2009 winner of an American Book Award, <http://www.bookweb.org/btw/awards/The-American-Book-Awards---Before-Columbus-Foundation.html> a Washington Post Best Book of 2008, and a Barnes & Noble Discover Pick for Fall 2008. <http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Ask-for-a-Convertible/Danit-Brown/e/9780375424540/?itm=1>

Ask for a Convertible is Danit Brown’s absorbing book of connected stories that revolve around the lonely, restless Osnat and a select few in her orbit over a period of about 15 years, mostly Israelis who feel the pull of another place no matter where they settle. Brown is wonderfully attuned to what’s special and strange about this particular pool of immigrants, but she’s careful to neither valorize where they come from nor paint their fraught relationships with their home and adopted countries as entirely unique.

For those of you who like to plan ahead, the subsequent meeting will take place on Sunday, April 19. The book selection is Homesick by Eshkol Nevo. Here’s a brief description of this somewhat lengthy novel.

This remarkable, kaleidoscopic novel tells the fragmented stories of a group of women and men brought together by chance in a small neighborhood in the hills of Israel. It is 1995, and Amir, a young man studying psychology in Jerusalem, and his girlfriend Noa, studying photography in Tel Aviv, decide to move in together, choosing a tiny apartment midway between their two cities -- a village that was forcibly emptied of its Arab inhabitants in 1948. Although the two students are only looking for a convenient place to spend time together, they find their new home to be no less complex a web of relationships than urban life: their landlords live on the other side of a paper-thin wall; the next-door neighbors have just lost their eldest son in Lebanon; and further down the street, a Palestinian construction worker named Saddiq is keeping a close watch on the house where his own family used to live. Please pass this information on to anyone who might be interested in joining the book club and is not part of Sisterhood.Elina Blaha

Funding for Educational Scholarships, Camps, Youth Study and Travel in Israel Available Through RST

Jewish camps: Rodef Sholom Temple offers financial support through several synagogue funds to enable the children of member families to attend Jewish camps and study or travel in Israel. Each year, the Temple’s Endowment Fund provides monies to the general budget for the express purpose of helping to send young people to Israel and Jewish summer camps on approved programs. For pre-Confirmation children, a committee, in consultation with Rabbi, will review programs or camps that are not Ramah or USY. Subventions for Israel programs are available to young people in the congregation who have been confirmed and will be returning to the Peninsula for the academic year following their program in Israel. Generally, participants are required to assist in conducting services both before and after their trip and to write an article for the Messenger upon their return describing their Israel experience (alternative requirements can be arranged). Interested applicants should send a written request by e-mail or on paper to the President of Rodef Sholom, describing the program and the fees charged. Links to websites are helpful. Deadline for this year’s application for either of the above is March 16, 2015. In addition to subsidies offered directly by the Temple, these RST family funds offer financial support: The Bernice Slavin Gordon Grant for Continuing Education offers funding to the children of RST members from confirmation through age 22 (or older if engaged in a graduate Jewish studies curriculum). Qualifying programs may include, but are not limited to, high school and/or college semesters in Israel, educational seminars or programs in Israel, Jewish studies programs, Jewish educational summer camps, or participation in extraordinary youth group activities.

The Boris and Selma Margolin Israel Experience Fund was established to promote the development of a strong attachment on the part of young members of our congregation for the homeland of the Jewish people through approved study and travel programs in Israel. The subsidy consists of a one-time grant of $500 to young people who are sophomores in high school through age 25. The applicant’s family must be members in good standing of Rodef Sholom Temple (RST). Upon their return from Israel, grant recipients will be required to present a program based on their experiences in Israel to classes at RST’s Religious School.

Dana Needham received the Men’s Club Yad Shel Chai award on November 22, 2014 in recognition of her numerous Torah and Haftarah readings and for her many times of leading parts of the service

The famed Jewish sage, Maimonides visited the religious school’s “Mitzvah Mall” in November. He taught the students many of his key concepts about giving and doing tzedakah, which in Hebrew, is rooted in “righteousness.” The 800-year-old costumed sage was portrayed by The Jane Fairman Director of Congregational Learning, Tess Goldblatt. S/he explained to the students that a good Jewish goal is to strive to contribute 10% to your Jewish family: to places such as your own synagogue, Jewish Family Services in Newport News, and to our Jewish family in Israel. Additional support should be provided when possible to other close community needs. Other presenters in the Mitzvah Mall included the Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads, the Virginia Wounded Warriors program, and Goodwill Industries.

Some of the panelists from the Men’s Club vs. Sisterhood “It’s Academic” challenge on

December 13, 2014. It was a fun evening.

The results? Men’s club came in second place and Sisterhood was next to last!

It was the year 166 B.C.E., and a small but mighty group of students and congregants met to determine the fate of Judea in the “How Chanukah Happened” simulation event. The 6th-7th graders, led by Rebecca Scheetz, were the Jewish Hellenists who admired the Greek’s beauty and love for the human physique. Antiochus’ party, led by Brian Weinberg, offered protection to the Jews if they would join them. The Romans, led by Sam Parrucci, asked only for access to trade routes. The Maccabees, 8th-9th-10th graders led by Mike Stupar, successfully convinced all but one Hellenist to maintain their Jewish identity and core values. At the end of the boisterous and enjoyable program, everyone went home with a detailed report of “what really happened.”
