    Introduction

International studies indicate that Indianeeds much larger per capita energyconsumption to provide better livingconditions to its citizens.

Role of energy management andconservation is substantial.

Planning commission of India hasestimated that India has conservationpotential at 23% of the total commercialenergy generated in the country.

India's energy requirement comes fromfive sectors; agriculture, industry, transport, services and domestic, eachhaving considerable saving potential.

For example, energy costs amount to 20percent of the total production cost ofsteel in India which is much higher thanthe international standards. Similarly the

energy intensity per unit of food grainproduction in India is 3 4 times higherthan that in Japan.

    Energy Management

Energy management is a process that notonly manages the energy production fromdifferent energy harvesting resources(solar, nuclear, fossil fuel) but alsoconcerns optimal utilization at theconsumer devices.

Objective: To minimize energy costs / waste without

affecting production, comfort and quality. To minimize the environmental effects.

To achieve and maintain optimum energyprocurement and utilization, throughout

    the organization.

    Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation is the deliberatepractice or an attempt to save electricity, fuel oil or gas or any other combustiblematerial, to be able to put to additionaluse by without spending any additional

    resources or money

However, if we look at the predicted futurehuman population figures and consider the

probability that the individual lifeexpectation will increase, we see thatenergy could, in the future, be in shortsupply.

    Barriers to Energy Conservation:

While there is considerable scope for

energy conservation in our country, therealso exist many barriers to it. For examplePsycho - social (people do not like tochange: social taboos and traditions),

    Economic (replacement is often costly).

Why do you need an EnergyManager

The energy manager provides leadershipin the development of policy on energymanagement action plan and plays a keyrole in the formulation of corporate energy

policy. He also prepares the information to be

submitted to the designated agency with

regard to the energy consumed and actiontaken on the recommendation of theaccredited energy auditor.

    Summary

We are entering a time when energymanagement is becoming immenselycomplex. Organizations are facing risingcommodity prices, changing regulations,

new consumer demands, climate changesand increased pressure from investors

Energy managers must be able to driveenergy cost reduction, be knowledgeable

on a range of volatile risks and theireffects on operations across multiple sites, and stay up-to-date on new and emergingtechnologies.
