Rolled and forged ringsfrom Ovako

Rings are vital components in many types of industries. It is therefore crucial to have a dedicatedsupplier in this area. For this reason, Ovako considers it very important to be a dedicated supplierand to focus on producing high quality rings as a priority business. This approach has made us

a leading producer of rolled rings.

Ovako has long experience with seamless rolled rings, cylindrical or profiled geometry very closeto the final shape of the finished component.

Our reputation for precision is well earned, whether it concerns the physical geometry of the ringor the composition and homogeneity of the steel. Our production capacity is about 2 million rings

per year, equivalent to about 30,000 tonnes of steel.

The bulk of our production is consumed by the rolling bearing industry, but a substantial shareis also delivered to customers in other industrial segments, such as the heavy vehicle, automotive

and machine tool manufacturing industries.

The dimensional range is 150-2,500 mm and the weight range is 5-2,500 kg.

Forged rings are also supplied up to 3,500 kg.

Rings to meet the industry’s needs

Size rangeRings are made in three different ring mills andone forging press. Outline production data isgiven in the table below:

Ring mill Type Outer diameter, Max ring height*, Weight,mm mm kg

8 radial rolling mill 150- 330 125 5- 23

4 axial/radial rolling mill 250- 750 230 18- 85

9 axial/radial rolling mill 335-2,500 550 75-2,500

Press 6 forging press 350-2,200 - -3,500

* Max height = As rolled height, lower heights may be achieved by parting off rolled rings.

Ovako can manufacture virtually any profile shape required. Where the shape is based on the customer productsshape, there is an additional, comparably small machining allowance.

In most cases we can roll rings with verysmall allowances and tight tolerances closeto the final shape of your product.

Some examples of typical profiles are shownbelow. The specalist will very quickly seethat this representative sample offers inter-esting solutions for many manufacturingpossibilities. Near-net-shaped rings offerthe buyer a total cost that is substantiallyless than other conventional methods ofproduction.

A near-net-shaped ring can be up to 50 percent lighter than a cylindrical equivalent, while at the same time reducing machining

time and a significant reduction in wastethrough lower volume, chip production andhandling. Some surfaces may even require nofurther machining at all.

They also demonstrate the specialist know-howthat Ovako has that few other manufacturerscan match.

Whatever you need, we can deliver!

Logistics (material flow)

Capacity booking system

To ensure the highest level of customer service,Ovako offers customers the opportunity of reservingcapacity in advance in our production system. Thesereservations are made monthly for every producttype, on a rolling forecast basis, to cover thefollowing six months. Customers using this systemare expected to forecast accurately and take thecapacity that they have reserved.

Lead times

Our nominal lead times are relatively short whenbench-marked against our competitors, andalthough they may vary depending on the overallcapacity utilisation of our rolling mills, Ovakoattempt to offer a better delivery service by settingtargets to continuously reduce lead times whateverthe external market conditions.

Nominal lead times

The nominal lead time for rolled rings, exmill, is 4-6calender weeks. However, this is just indicative anddependent on the steel grade, processes involvedand actual capacity utilisation. Please contact us toobtain an accurate lead time for a specific productat the time of order. Alternatives with shorter leadtimes, such as the creation of a specific inventory

of finished products ear-marked for an individualcustomer, or obtaining supplies from an inter-mediate inventory, can be arranged subject toa separate agreement.

Heat treatmentRings are supplied in the following conditions orcombinations thereof:

• Normalised.

• Soft annealed.

• Stress relieved.

• Isothermally annealed.

• Quenched and tempered.

• Controlled cooled.

MachiningSemi-finished or finished machined rings canbe supplied according to individual customerrequirements.

Shot blast finishOvako can offer shot blasted rings of diametersup to 1,250 mm and 500 kg.

Final inspectionAll finished rings are inspected for surface defects, discrepancies in inner and outer diameter, width, height, conicity, ovality and squareness. Muchof this is done by an inline inspection system.

Delivery executionPackaging

As standard, the rings are delivered strapped onpallets. The number of rings on each pallet can bespecified by the customer, but within the physicallimitations of the pallet. The maximum height ofthe pallet is 1 metre and maximum weight is1,000 kg. Shot blasted rings are usually deliveredwith plastic wrapping around the pallet.

Marking

Material delivered direct from our mill is labelledin accordance with the Odette standard.

The standard information, some of which isbar-coded, is:

• Customer’s name, address, purchase order andpart number.

• Ovako’s name, serial number and suppliersorder number.

• Steel grade and heat number.

• Weight.

• Number of pieces.

Customer-specific data can be added on request.

the examples shown should therefore be consideredas a guideline only.
