• In 49 CE Mount Vesuvius erupted.
• It destroyed the small city of Pompeii in southern Italy.
• Over 2,000 people were killed by the smoke and burning lava.
• It also “preserved” many of the buildings, paintings and bodies for future generations.

It could be flooded with water for staged naval battles.
Roman Mosaics
• The Romans were noted for their MOSIACS.
• Mosaics are pictures made of small pieces of stone or colored glass.
• These small pieces are called TESSERAE.
• Today we often see mosaics made of tiles in homes or restaurants.
